Kindergarten-2nd April 6-7, 2013 Jesus Resurrection and Ascension Luke 24 (Pg. 1233), John 20 (Pg. 1265), Acts 1 (Pg. 1270) Jesus died, came back to life, and then went to Heaven! Hang out with kids (10 minutes): Ask kids about their week. Get kids into groups and play games together. Large Group (30 minutes): Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. And don t be afraid to redirect kids who aren t! Have kids gather back in front of the teaching area and watch the video from the lesson and do the songs together at the end of small group. When parents come to pick kids up, they will get a quick review of the lesson along with the kids. Small Group (20-30 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, remind them to tell their parents about what surprised them most in today s story. Today, we re learning about the story of Jesus Resurrection and Ascension. Watch the video ahead of time and read Genesis 2:17, John 1:12, 14:2 and 20, Acts 1:1-10, Romans 8:14-17, and Romans 10:9-1, so youʼre prepared to discuss it with kids.

Goal: to retell today s story and get kids to understand the impact of the amazing events through personal reaction Why? This story is the most exciting part of God s Story so far we want kids to remember it! Tip: It s okay to admit to kids that that we don t understand all the details, like how Jesus went up to the sky or how he s always with us or how he ll come back and recreate the world. Encourage them to read more about it in the Bible (and point them to the verses on the handout). CONNECT 1. Tell us your name and one thing that surprised you from today s story (kids may say they were surprised that Jesus came back to life, appeared to friends, went into the sky, is always with us, is coming back, etc anything is okay!) REVIEW To review today s story, give each kid a handout with images. Assign each kid an image by asking kids to circle one or two images (or share an image, if the group is really large). Then go around the group and retell the story. At each surprising part, ask kids to show their surprise faces (like in large group!). Encourage them to use the pictures, so they retell the story in their own words. If they get stuck, see if they can help each other out. REACT/RELATE/PRACTICE 2. (Point to the women at the tomb) If you guys saw that Jesus wasn t buried anymore, what would you have done? (they can say anything, but try to get kids to connect their reactions to the women, who ran to share the news) 3. (Point to Jesus in the house with his friends) If you guys were in a room and all of a sudden, Jesus appeared inside, what would you have done? (they can say anything, but help them connect with the disciples who wanted to see Jesus scars) 4. (Point to the picture with the clouds) If you guys saw Jesus going up to Heaven by rising to the sky, what would you have done? (help them connect to wanting to tell others about the amazing event they saw then tell them that since they know what Jesus did for us and how he s going to one day come back to recreate a prefect world for God s whole family, they CAN tell others!) (Continue on the next page)

5. (If you have a younger group, you can just SAY this part instead of turning it into a question at the end) Even though Jesus is Heaven, you know what? He s also with US. That s really hard to understand, but before Jesus left, he gave his disciples a special job to do. In Matthew 28:18-20, the Bible says this (read the following verse and focus on the italicized version so kids don t think that Jesus going to Heaven means that he has left them): Then Jesus came to them. He said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 So you must go and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end. What do you guys think this verse means? What does Jesus want US to do? a. Teach people to follow Jesus. b. Trust that Jesus is with us always! 6. Put the kids in pairs and ask them to practice telling the whole story to each other. **Pray with the kids, thanking Jesus that he will one day recreate a perfect world for God s whole family! Extra time? Grab a group game and bring it to the table. Or, if the whole room is wrapping up, watch the video together again.

1 Today we want kids to engage in the story by relating to how Jesus friends felt when they saw Jesus had come back to life: surprised, but total belief! Find ways to keep kids engaged by having them repeat a word or phrase, act something out, or make a face or a motion... every couple of minutes give them a way to engage verbally or kinesthetically. Double bonus - It will actually help them remember what you're saying, too! Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids Club! I m so glad you re here today. Today, we re going to talk about what happened after Jesus died. Because remember, Jesus didn t stay dead! He is alive! And when he came back to life, people were pretty surprised to see him! INTRO: SURPRISE I want you to think of how it feels to be really surprised. Everybody look at this present (hold up the unopened gift). Do any of you know what s inside? (Let kids respond.) Nobody? So if we opened it, would it be a surprise? (Let kids say: yes!) It s really fun to open a surprise, isn t it?! Today, we re going to try to imagine the surprise Jesus friends felt when they saw him and really feel that surprise with them! So let s practice looking surprised. When we feel surprised, what kind of face do you make? Is it something like.this? (Show the picture of the surprised face.) Let s all make our surprised face! (Model and let kids respond) Great job! Get ready to make that face a lot as we go through today s story! JESUS LAST DAYS ON EARTH One person who got surprised was a woman named Mary, a friend of Jesus. She was in a garden crying (pretend to cry), really sad because Jesus was gone. All of a sudden, Jesus was in the garden, too! Mary didn t even recognize him at first, but then Jesus said her name. And (make your surprised face!) Mary felt surprised, because she realized it was REALLY Jesus. Later, some of Jesus other friends were in a room. All of a sudden, Jesus appeared! He didn t even open the door to get in! How do you think Jesus friends felt? (Let kids say: surprised! Then show the picture of the disciples.) Yep, just look how surprised they were in this picture! But pretty soon, they realized it was REALLY Jesus!

JESUS WENT TO HEAVEN Jesus walked and talked on earth for 40 days, so hundreds of people saw he was alive! I bet Jesus saw a lot of these (show your surprised face) faces! Then Jesus left the earth again. But this time, he didn t die. He surprised us again by doing something nobody expected. Let s see what it is! We re going to watch a video that shows us the story of Jesus appearing to his friends, then tells us where he went after that. As you watch, see if you can figure out where Jesus went and why it was so surprising. Video: God s Story / Jesus Rescue (Resurrection and Ascension) Wow, so Jesus died then he came back to life then where did he go? (Let kids respond.) Yes, he went into the sky and then into Heaven! But before he left, Jesus told his friends that he would always be with them, even though he was in Heaven! Then he rose up into the sky. Do you think Jesus friends felt surprised to see him go up into the clouds? (Let kids say: yes!) JESUS IS COMING BACK The best part is, after Jesus was gone, two men dressed in white stood and talked to Jesus friends, who were just looking up at the sky and the clouds, probably with surprised faces (look up with your surprise face). The men told Jesus friends this: SLIDE: Acts 1:11-They said, Why are you men from Galilee standing here and looking up into the sky? Jesus has been taken to heaven. But he will come back in the same way that you have seen him go. Wow, one day Jesus will come back! And guess why he s coming back? He s coming to recreate a perfect world for God s WHOLE family to live in. Does that make anybody else really excited?! (Let kids respond.) Me, too! WORSHIP This whole story is pretty surprising, huh? But it s better than any surprise I could cover in wrapping paper it means Jesus rescued us! Let s sing together and thank God for Jesus! Song: Dance, Shout and Sing (song with hand motions) Music Video: Come With Me (music video with hand motions) PRAY Ask somebody to come and thank Jesus that he died and came back to life to rescue us!

After Jesus came back to life, he lived on earth for 40 days, then disappeared into the sky and went to Heaven. We call it his Ascension. Ask your kid to tell you about it. You can also read the story together in John 20 and Acts 1 or watch a video of it at CrossroadsKidsClub.net.
