THE SERVICE OF THE WORD Gathering/Prelude The Processional The Acclamation The standing, the says this or a seasonal greeting: The Collect for Purity [Minister introduces the instructed eucharist service] Blessed be God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. The and the pray: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Law The then reads the Summary of the Law. The Decalogue may be used throughout the seasons of Advent and Lent and on other penitential occasions. Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40 Kyrie The and the say in turn: Gloria in Excelsis Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The and the sing: 2

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Worship in Song The Collect of the Day The says to the : The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. The prays the Collect: O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Blessing of the Children The invites the Children to come forward for a blessing. Let us pray God s blessing over the children of this church. Almighty God our heavenly Father, who has committed to the Holy Church the care and nurture of your children; Enlighten with your wisdom those who teach and those who learn, that, rejoicing in the knowledge of your truth, they 3

may worship you and serve you from generation to generation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The dismisses the Children and invites the Congregation to be seated for the Lessons. The Lessons The Reader introduces the First Lesson. Reader A reading from Amos 5:18-24. 18 Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness, and not light, 19 as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him. 20 Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it? 21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. 22 Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them. 23 Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. 24 But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. After the First Lesson, the Reader says: Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. A psalm follows the First Lesson. Reader The psalm appointed for today is Psalm 70. The Reader may give instruction for its recitation. Reader 1 Make haste, O God, to deliver me! O Lord, make haste to help me! 2 Let them be put to shame and confusion 4

who seek my life! Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt! Reader 3 Let them turn back because of their shame who say, Aha, Aha! 4 May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you! May those who love your salvation say evermore, God is great! Reader 5 But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay! After the Psalm shall be said: Reader Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Reader introduces the Second Lesson. Reader A reading from 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. 13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words. After the Second Lesson, the Reader says: Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Then follows the Sequence Hymn. All standing, the or Priest reads the Gospel, first saying: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew (25:1-13). 5

Glory to you, Lord Christ. 1 Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6 But at midnight there was a cry, Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out. 9 But the wise answered, saying, Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves. 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, Lord, lord, open to us. 12 But he answered, Truly, I say to you, I do not know you. 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. After the Gospel, the says: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sequence Hymn is continued. The Sermon The Nicene Creed The invites the Congregation to stand and respond to the Word of God preached in the sermon. Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, 6

was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the The Prayer Minister invites the Congregation to take a posture for prayer. Prayer Minister We praise you, God of the Universe, King of Kings, our Shield, Source and Provider. Brothers and sisters, let us lift up our praises and thanksgiving to the Living God! The Congregation offers prayers of thanksgiving. Prayer Minister Heavenly Father, you have called us into your family and have knit us together into the body of your Son Jesus Christ. And so we pray for your Church universal. For Foley, our Archbishop, and Keith, our Bishop, and for all the clergy and people of our diocese and congregation. For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are persecuted for their faith. For all those who proclaim the Gospel at home and abroad and for all who teach and disciple others. Please offer your prayers for the Church. The Congregation offers prayers. Prayer Minister Lord Jesus, Creator of the world and Sustainer of all people, we pray for our nation: especially for those in authority and for all in public service. Lead us in the way of justice, truth, and compassion. We also pray for all the nations of the world: for the peace of our planet earth, for the well-being and unity of the people of God, and for the salvation of unreached people groups. Please offer your prayers for our nation and for the world. 7

The Congregation offers prayers. Prayer Minister Holy Spirit, Comforter and Guide, we thank you for the intimate care that you give to each and every one of your people. We pray that you would extend that love to all those who need it, whether family members or friends, or those in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. Draw those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you. Please offer your prayers for family, for friends, and for those in need. The Congregation offers prayers. Prayer Minister Does anyone have a word of prophecy or encouragement from the Lord for us his people? The Congregation can offer a word from the Lord. Prayer Minister Almighty God, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. The Confession and Absolution of Sin The Prayer Minister continues: We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins. A brief period of silence follows. Then the pray together: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Bishop or Priest stands and says: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm 8

and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Comfortable Words The may then say one or more of the following sentences, first saying: Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1:15 If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2 The Peace The invites the to stand. The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Then the and may greet one another in the name of the Lord. Announcements THE SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT The Offertory The may begin the Offertory with one of the provided sentences of Scripture. At this time, let us continue our worship through God s tithes and your offerings. In this way, we give back to God out of God s abundant goodness to us. Amen. During the Offertory a hymn, psalm, or anthem may be sung. The or Priest prepares the Holy Table for the celebration. The Doxology The stand while the offerings are presented. 9

The Sursum Corda The remain standing. The faces them and sings or says: The continues saying: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is just and right so to do. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty. The following Proper Preface is said: Through Jesus Christ our Lord: For he is your living Word from before time and for all ages; by him you created all things, and by him you make all things new. The concludes with: Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The Sanctus The and sing together: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Prayer of Consecration The continues: Lord God our Father: When we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you sent your only Son into the world for our salvation; by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. On the cross he offered himself once for all as our Redeemer, that by his suffering 10

and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. After he ascended to your right hand in glory, you sent your Holy Spirit, that we might become your holy people. At the following words concerning the bread, the is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it, and here* may break the bread; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing the wine to be consecrated. On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it,* and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me. Now sanctify these gifts that they may become for us the Body and Blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may be filled with your Holy Spirit and manifest your presence and power in the world. Therefore, heavenly Father, as we joyfully proclaim our Lord s life, death, and resurrection, we offer ourselves, our souls and bodies, as a living sacrifice. Grant that we who partake of this Holy Communion may receive the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ, and be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. At the last day bring us with all your saints into the fullness of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer The and sing or say together: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lad us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, 11

and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Pascha Nostrum If not already done before, the breaks the consecrated Bread. Then may be sung or said: Alleluia. Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed, once for all upon the cross. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The Prayer of Humble Access The and together say: We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Agnus Dei The following or some other suitable anthem may be sung or said here. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, Grant us your peace. The Ministration of Communion Facing the, the may say the following invitation: The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. The Ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the. During the ministration of Communion, hymns, psalms, or anthems may be sung. 12

The Post Communion Prayer After Communion, the says: Let us pray. and Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ: and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. And now Father, send us out into the world to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. The Blessing The Bishop when present, or the Priest, gives this or some other Scriptural blessing: The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. The Recessional A hymn, psalm or anthem may be sung after the Blessing for a recessional. The Dismissal The, or the Priest, may dismiss the people with these words: [Minister concludes the service] Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, Alleluia. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia. 13
