Parents please participate in the Vesper service as a family. For more information, contact Fr. Michael. With Western calendar Christians beginning Lent, our Pyrohy Project is in full swing. Already, large orders are coming in and will need to be filled. PLEASE volunteer some of your time to this worthy project which provides great support to the financial needs of our parish. Check the Calendar of Events every week for dates and times. Volunteers are especially needed on Friday mornings. As is printed in the bulletin every week, family members are asked to phone the parish office when their loved ones are admitted to the hospital. It is also important to notify the clergy when they are transferred to a rehabilitation / nursing facility. It is very sad when parishioners are in such a facility and no one informs the parish office or clergy, so that they can follow up with visits. Memorial services (Sorokousty) will begin, as is the tradition in our parish, on the first Friday of Great Lent (March 22 nd ) and will continue every Friday. If you would like your deceased family members remembered during this service, please notify the clergy. This request must be made annually. As we begin this Lenten season, in preparation for the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Pascha as Orthodox Christians,we are called upon to make time for God and our spiritual well-being. We will all feel better for having done this. The following are Church regulations that you are asked to adhere to during this Lenten season: Attend Church every Sunday and participate in the special Lenten services that are scheduled. Participate sincerely in the Sacraments of Holy Confession and Communion every Sunday. Fast the entire first and last week of Lent, as well as on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays. To those of stronger body and more willing spirit, it is wholeheartedly recommended that the practices of a sterner quality of the traditions and customs of our Holy Orthodox Church be followed, namely fasting the entire Great Lent from meat and dairy products. Practice deeds of charity; think of others; visit the sick, lonely and elderly. Participate in the Liturgy of Pre-Sanctified Gifts every Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. Confessions will be heard at 5:30 p.m. Those desiring to receive Holy Communion at this evening Liturgy must begin fasting from food and drink at 12:00 noon. Parishioners who, because of age or ill health, are unable to attend services to receive Holy Communion in Church are asked to call the clergy to arrange to have the Sacraments brought to their homes. However, please do not wait until the last week to do so because that is when the clergy are most busy preparing for Holy Week and the Paschal services. Please note that the faithful are NOT required to fast from medicine they are taking. To those who have not actively participated in the services of our parish, what better time than now to make a change. Also, if for any reason you have not received the Sacraments of Holy Confession and Holy Communion for a number of years and would like to discuss this matter with the clergy, please do not hesitate to call. Remember that to be considered a member in good standing in the Orthodox Church requires the believer to receive the Holy Mysteries of Confession and Communion a minimum of once a year. Great Lent is the appropriate time to fulfill this requirement. May God bless you with strength, wisdom, and a heart of prayer as we begin the Great Lent! In Christ s Love, Fr. John & Fr. Michael 3
Our St. Vladimir Parish Family most sincerely greets Fr. Deacon Vasyl Pasakas on his ordination into the Holy Deaconate yesterday at St. Sophia Seminary in South Bound Brook, N.J. We also greet Oksana Mahlay Pasakas on joining the ranks of Pani Matka. May Our Lord s blessings be upon them. Mnohiya Lita! Deacon Vasyl will be ordained into the Holy Priesthood on Saturday, April 6 th in South Bound Brook. Because this is the first week of Great Lent, Monday and Wednesday evening s activities Ukrainian Dance, Bandura, Art & Pottery classes have been cancelled. A special Lenten youth service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Parents please attend with your children. Please note that at 6:00 p.m. every Wednesday evening during Great Lent, beginning on March 27 th, the Liturgy of Pre-Sanctified Gifts will be served. Confession will be at 5:45 p.m. Also remember that, if you are going to receive Holy Communion, you must fast from food and water from 12:00 noon. As always, those who take medication and require food and water are exempt from the fast. If you have any questions, please contact Fr. John. * * * * * * Please note that, during the 5 Sundays of Great Lent, the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great will be served. The noticeable difference from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is the longer prayers that are recited by the clergy. Our parish is once again sponsoring a Lenten Fish Fry every Friday night until March 29 th, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Last year, our patrons were very complimentary, commenting that we had one of the best fish fries in the area. With these positive comment, we hope they will come again this year and bring family and friends with them. Volunteers are needed to make this project a success. If you are willing to help, contact Mr. Gene Boyko at (440) 885-0468. Please notify the parish clergy of all address changes. It has come to our attention that numerous parishioners have moved and that we do not have their new addresses. The Orthodox Christian community of Greater Cleveland and Lorain will soon honor the Sunday of Orthodoxy. This year s celebration will take place next Sunday, March 24 th at 4:00 p.m. at St. Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral, 3256 Warren Road in Cleveland. The Very Rev. Hieromonk Calinic (Berger) will preach the homily. The Greater Cleveland Council of Orthodox Clergy has assumed the responsibility of soliciting donations to underwrite the celebration and to support the Orthodox ministries that serve our area. We ask you to contribute to this effort by making a donation to the GCCOC. In return you will be listed as a Patron in the handout at the Pan Orthodox Vespers and the donations collected will be used to support local Orthodox charities. Please fill out the donation form in this morning s bulletin. All donations from our parish will be listed under the parish name. Having suffered the passion for us, O Lord, Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on us. 4
Pussy Willows Alert! Our church needs pussy willows for Palm Sunday (April 28 th ). If you have them in your yard, please watch for when they bloom, cut and bring them to church. Thank you! On Saturday, March 9 th, Mr. Ivan Iwnicki entered into eternity at the age of 97, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were conducted from our church on Friday, March 15 th. Mr. Iwnicki has no living relatives in the U.S.A. His daughter, Olga, died two months earlier. May their memory be eternal! We also offer prayers and condolences to Mrs. Tamara Host and son, Mark, on the sudden death of their husband and father, Tony, while on vacation in Singapore. May his memory be eternal and may Our Loving Lord comfort them in their loss. Congratulations to the children of our Taras Shevchenko School of Ukrainian Studies on their participation at last Sunday s Taras Shevchenko Commemorative Program. The children of our school received many compliments. We also thank our dedicated teachers for the many hours spent preparing the children for the program.
