Few Christians dispute the wisdom and benefits of mentoring. Many a young person in today s church eagerly desires such a mentor, but they sometimes have difficulty finding someone older than them willing to step into that role. Why is this? People who have thought about mentoring often feel unqualified, bewildered and fearful of over committing. But what s really involved? What does it take to be a mentor? Perfection? Formal training? Grandparenthood? No. A heart for God, knowledge of His Word, experience in life, and a love for people can all help qualify you for this job. As a coach, you will get to be a mentor to the amazing students entrusted to your care. So, don t worry about having to be perfect. Here are a few qualities that can help you as you strive for effective mentoring relationships. Be Available You don t have to be a Bible scholar to mentor another, but you should love the God of the Bible and want to abide by His Word. You don't have to be a trained psychologist; being available with timely and godly advice can make the difference for the individual who is without an anchor. Students need the experience, endurance and example of older Christians. Who else will guide them? Christian parents? Definitely. The pastor? Maybe. Their friends? Sometimes. But you will have a special relationship as their coach. Be obedient and be available. Be Purposeful What are your quizzers seeking from a relationship with you? A prayer partner, teacher, parent, etc.? Maybe your student needs a godly adult example because she didn t grow up in a Christian home and has no model to follow. Or maybe one student wants help in their personal prayer and devotion time with the Lord. Although the nature of the relationship will differ from student to student, pray about what you want to focus on with them as you travel together through the Book of Mark. Be Creative Regular times and days suit the chronologically challenged, but there is always room for variation. If you can, be spontaneous with your students. Go out for Chinese, meet for breakfast, have a study session on the weekend; whatever time and place meets your needs, try to schedule it in. What activities can you share walking, running, cooking, hiking with a young person? Christian mentoring isn t about being intensely spiritual all the time, it s also about building relationships. And always remember guys with guys and girls with girls during one-on-one time. Be a Listener When you have managed to get together with your quizzer, try this: Listen. Let him open up. Don t feel compelled to dole out advice for every topic he might raise. Wait until he asks for your thoughts and advice before offering it. Be trustworthy. The person you mentor must be able to trust you implicitly and know that nothing they tell you will ever be taken any further. As a coach, your mentor/quizzer bond is a sacred relationship. Be Real When it is time to do the talking, remember that honesty makes you vulnerable. We are all sinners saved by grace, continuing to be transformed into the image of Christ. And none of us is finished yet! So don t be afraid to be genuine and reveal your weaknesses. In Christian mentoring, the grace of God gets the job done through us (and sometimes in spite of us). Be an Example Do as I say, not as I do, is as infamous in mentoring as it is in parenting. Mentors must show their trustworthiness, demonstrate their love for God, and actually pray when they say they will. Words alone are empty. Be like Paul, who encouraged the Corinthian church to do as he did: Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you (1 Cor. 11:1,2). It will look different in each relationship, but coaches must find ways to encourage and develop godliness in their quizzers. Challenge your quizzer in different areas in his life, encourage him to step out in faith and wisdom, gleaned from you and others, and to trust the Lord for everything. The lasting fruit of your time together will be evident in your quizzer s life for years to come. PASTOR BERNIE and BQAA NOW ON FACEBOOK Want to stay connected with all that is happening in the Bible Quiz world? Two new opportunities are now available. If you or your quizzers have a facebook page (www.facebook.com) you can now add Pastor Bernie as your friend. Keep up with him as he travels the country starting new teams, preaches at churches and retreats, works in the office, and lives life with his family. He might even mention the Steelers once or twice! Former quizzers can also join the new Assemblies of God Bible Quiz Alumni Association (BQAA), a place to reunite with old friends, dream about the future of Bible Quiz, network with others, and minister to the Bible Quiz community around the country. Alumni can post on message boards, insert fun photos and video of the time period that they quizzed, and find people they never imaged they would connect with again. Alumni on the BQAA site will also receive special messages for ongoing ministry opportunities in which alumni in every walk of life can be a part. ALSO CHECK OUT BQ FLAIR If you do not have a facebook, but would like to join the groups above, go to www.facebook.com to register. CORINTHIANS CHAPTER SAMPLER: YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! Each year many coaches and quizzers benefit from the question sets and resources found on The Basic 5 CD ROM. If you did not already know, question sets are donated from quizzers, coaches, officials and alumni and are compiled into one product to make the Chapter Sampler for that season. What a great way to give back to the Bible Quiz community. Would you consider doing the same? This year, the national Bible Quiz office is in need of question writers for the 2009-2010 Chapter Sampler for Corinthians. Question sets will be compiled from the Bible Quiz community across the country for this fantastic product. For Corinthians, the Chapter Sampler will have between 120 and 140 sets of donated questions for coaches and quizzers to use during their practice and individual study times. If you would be willing to donate a minimum of two sets of questions for this product, please contact Chapter Sampler coordinator Katrina Martin at martinkn1@gmail.com. Chapter writing assignments will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. After signing up you will receive more information concerning question formatting, a draft of the Corinthians portion, and a copyright release contract. All sets and contracts are due to Katrina by November 1, 2008. CHECK OUT www.biblequiz.com FOR NEW AND UPDATED INFORMATION There is so much new happening in the world of Bible Quiz and we hope that you will check out the resources at www.biblequiz.com. Nine training opportunities and retreats are available for your team this year, as well as 16 tournaments held across the nation. These training opportunities and tournaments will allow your kids to sharpen their skills while connecting with other students across the country who are as passionate about the Lord and His Word as they are. At www.biblequiz.com you can also view updates on coaching tips, review Mark question formats from the official writer, print off National and Master Memorization guidelines and forms, and keep up with upcoming news, events and resources that will be available in the future. Staying well connected can help ensure that you and your team will have a fantastic year in Bible Quiz. NATIONAL BIBLE QUIZ ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING The National Advisory Committee will be meeting in October to seek God s direction for the Bible Quiz ministry. One of the subjects of the meeting will be how to grow the ministry of Bible Quiz. Everything is on the table. The NAC is asking that the entire BQ community of coaches, quizzers and officials give their input. This can be about anything from how we structure the ministry, to how we promote, to what color the books are (if that is an issue for you). There have been some interesting ideas kicked around on the forum recently. Will they happen? We don't know, but they definitely will be discussed. Doug Black is already coordinating the response from the forum. Feel free to send your thoughts directly to him by e-mail at dougbq@bellsouth.net. All responses will be compiled and brought before the committee. Responses should be sent to Doug by the end of September to have in time for the October meeting. Thanks in advance for all of your help. We are excited about your ideas! MARK DISCIPLESHIP AWARD Have your quizzers started on their discipleship award? Coach Jason Martin of Crossway, Valencia, PA, says: One of the goals for our church s Bible Quiz ministry this year is that everyone receive the Discipleship Award. When it came to the first application point on the Holy Spirit, I thought, Wow, why not start with a little easier, less intense application? I have several new quizzers, two of which happen to be fairly new Christians. I was worried about how reading through the papers on the Holy Spirit would go over. During practice, we read through some of the papers and each student was required to finish the reading for the next practice. The positive feedback was abundant. Students that had been Christians for some time, as well as those who were brand new Christians, asked question after question. We heard things like Well that makes sense, I never thought about that and How do I explain to my mom that speaking in tongues is something that still happens? One quizzer in particular commented on how she thought that Bible Quiz practice was going to be a boring thing, but she was glad that there was something like this thrown in. I believe that the Discipleship Award is a great way to get all quizzers no matter what their experience or ability to apply Bible Quiz in a relevant way to their life. The Mark Discipleship Award points and applications can be found in the Mark Study Guide. All Mark Discipleship Award forms and application points must be postmarked by April 9, 2008. Coaches: Make sure that your students have fulfilled all requirements. Several application points ask that items be sent to the national Bible Quiz office. The national office will verify that application points have been completed. No exceptions will be made for items not received. If you have any questions, please contact the national Bible Quiz office at 417.862.2781 or bq@ag.org. MARK MEMORIZATION AWARDS & BIBLE SUNDAY Get a head start and book your dates now to be able to quote in a service at your local church for the memorization awards. National Bible Sunday is December 14, 2008 the perfect day for your students to quote Scripture in front of your church congregation. For the Book of Mark, all memorization award forms will be due on May 1, 2009. Again this year, acceptable quoting times include a Sunday morning, Sunday evening, or a Wednesday evening service. All quoting and other guideline requirements must be completed by May 1, 2009. There will be no exceptions for forms that are postmarked or faxed after the deadline. No extensions will be granted. (Please know that several applications for the 2008 memorization awards were denied for those who did not meet the award deadlines for quoting and/or form submission.) Only the official National & Master Memorization Award form will be accepted. These forms must be postmarked or faxed no later than May 1, 2009. Forms and guidelines can be found at www.biblequiz.com. For more information and guidelines concerning the National or Master Memorization Award, go to www.biblequiz.com. Several colleges offer scholarship money for students who earn the memorization awards. Assemblies of God Bible Quiz September 2008 Coach s Connection Page 3
