CPR CALL PROBLEM RESOLUTION BIBLE STUDY SERIES

Process of Conversion Giving People Back Their Breath When [the Holy Spirit] comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. John 16.8-11 You perform CPR when someone has stopped breathing and their heart isn t beating. You are trying to give them back their breath. Interestingly, the word the Bible uses for Spirit, both in Greek and Hebrew, ( pneuma and ruach respectively), can also mean breath. So, just as in physical CPR, we are trying to bring someone back to life by giving them their breath or spirit back. Cool, right? If we re going to perform Spiritual CPR we can t do it by ourselves. Conversion is the work of the Holy Spirit. End of story. Our job, when we study the Bible with people, is to put people in contact with the Holy Spirit. It isn t a series of well thought questions, or clever illustrations, although those may very well put people in contact with the Holy Spirit, it is the Holy Spirit that brings people to Jesus. Our job is to help people come in contact with Holy Spirit and let him do the resurrecting. But don t take my word for it, it works like this in the Bible. Let s look at John 16 and compare that with Acts 2. John 16 Acts 2 Purpose Righteousness (v.10) Sin (v.9) Judgment (v. 11) Jesus the Christ & His Righteousness (v. 14-35) The Sin of the People (v. 36-37) How to Avoid Judgment (v.38-41) Call to Righteousness Convict Sin Cure the Problem It seems as though this is the pattern: Sin, righteousness and judgement. Now it does seem that the order is different at times. The pattern of a call to righteousness, a conviction of sin and then offering the cure to avoid judgement appears clearly in Acts 2, John 4, Acts 13, Acts 17 and it seems to be present in Acts 8, Acts 7, and Acts 26. So, following the example in the Bible, we have crafted the CPR Study Series into three studies that aim to bring people into contact with the Holy Spirit with regard to sin, righteousness, and judgment.

First Aid Scriptures Know your Scriptures! We need to know why we are going to each verse, and what that verse teaches, rebukes, corrects, and train us to do. Teach Scriptures can be used to teach all sorts of things, but if you don t know what the main thing that scripture is teaching, who knows what you ll end up teaching. With every Scripture you read you must be clear at the main point that the passage is teaching. For example Luke 9.23-26 Basics of Discipleship Isaiah 59.1-2 What Sin does to you and God Acts 26.18-21 Jesus definition of Repentance Acts 2.36-41 How to Get Saved See First Aid Scriptures on the next page, for some basic main points for the CPR studies. Again, some passages have a few things to teach. But the point is to read a passage not because it s the next one but because it serves a purpose to teach something that a person needs not because it s next. You can t address the needs if you don t know what the passage teaches. Reprove/Correct We all have things in our worldview and Kingdom-view that are wrong. We have attitudes and thoughts that we don t even know we have that need to be exposed and corrected. Scriptures must be used to teach. But Scriptures also must be used to expose the things that are drastically wrong in how we think and how we act. It s important to know what common attitudes people tend to have in response to the teaching you are teaching. For example Matthew 28:18-20 Common Attitudes My pastor definitely does that, but I don t think that s for everyone. I make disciples in my own way, by shining my light. I don t think evangelism is my gift. Well, my grandma is definitely a Christian These attitudes will change based on where you live, what kind of people you are studying with, their socio-economic background, their spiritual upbringing, etc which is why it is important to Take the Pulse each time you study the Bible with someone. If we don t address these attitudes specifically, those attitudes will continue to cut off the work of the Holy Spirit in their hearts. Train Once we have taught, reproved, and corrected it s time to train. Training basically means to become something you are not. This is the practical application of the scripture you re studying. Very often this is the, So how could you start [insert correct Scripture teaching] instead of [insert incorrect attitude] even starting today? These practicals are meant to place the seeker in a position where the Holy Spirit could work on their heart and in fact seal the biblical teaching on their heart. It s important to be flexible with these practicals because different practicals will be helpful for different people. Person A may be very quiet and sharing their faith with two people may take tremendous faith, whereas Person B who is incredibly social would share their faith with 50 people and it would require no faith, for Person B the challenge may be to share their faith people they are afraid to talk to about Jesus, like their very atheist friends.

CPR Study Series Overview NOTE What follows IS NOT a script of how to do these studies. Each study has the objectives of the study and Scriptures you COULD use based on the attitudes of the person you are studying with. What we consider essential Scriptures have been bolded.

The Call Do you want to follow Jesus? Purpose To Call people to follow Jesus the way he says to follow him. Are you in, or out? First Take the Pulse (See What their attitudes are already) Religious background Beliefs about God/Jesus/The Bible What do you want to get out of studying the Bible? This will tell you how to steer this particular Call study. I. Call to Know Jesus [If a person does not know anything about Jesus] Jesus is God in the Flesh (God wants to communicate with you) John 1.1/1.14/Colossians 1.15 Jesus (God) wants to love you, forgive you, and call you to change John 8.11 Jesus is the Only Way (God wants you to be with him) John 14.6 How to find out if Jesus is who he says he is John 7.17/John 8.31-32 Jesus is the way God calls us. By knowing him we can know God. II. Call to Follow the Bible The Bible Needs to Be Your Authority 2 Timothy 3.16-17 Breathed out by God and carries his authority. Useful for teaching, reproving, correcting, training in righteousness. The Bible needs to be your trainer. Acts 17.10-12 Bereans eagerly examined everyday, Word was the authority, not Paul You Must Obey The Bible James 1.22-25 Do What It Says! (not a listener, but a doer) 1 Timothy 4.16 Life & Doctrine John 12.47-48 The Bible is the Judge for our souls The Bible is the Word of God [If a person doubts the Validity of the Bible] John 7.17 Put it into practice and you will find out. The Jesus Experiment John 8.31-32 Hold to the teachings, and then you ll know the truth 2 Peter 1.19-21 Not many interpretations, but from the Spirit III. Call to Follow Jesus [If someone wants to follow the Bible] Followers of Jesus are called Disciples and Christians Acts 11.25-26 Disciples are the same as Christians. They have the same standard. Finding the Core Sin What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person s heart, that evil thoughts come Mark 7.20-21 NIV Every person is a factory, and our number one export is sin. Throughout their life, people will sin in ways that would turn anyone s stomach if it was laid out with specificity. When we study the problem of sin with people this is one of our primary jobs, to help people see their sin as God does. But it can be overwhelming for them and you to try and find and change every tiny sin. A solution for that is looking for the Core sin rather than every instance of sin. The Core sin is a fundamental character sin that drives and spawns other sin. Like a cancerous tumor that might affect the body in many ways but the root cause is the cancer, so the there may be many instances of sin but the Core sin(s) will be driving those instances. It is the common thread driving the spiral of sin in that person s life. For example Pornography (Behavior) > Because it feels good (Logic) > Selfishness (Character) Pornography (Behavior) > Because I m Lonely (Logic) > Fear/Insecurity (Character) Pornography (Behavior) > I was bored (Logic) > Rebellious/Pride (Character) Partying/Drunkenness (Behavior) > It was fun (Logic) > Selfishness (Character) Partying/Drunkenness (Behavior) > All my friends were going (Logic) > People-Pleasing/Pride (Character) Partying/Drunkenness (Behavior) > It wasn t that bad (Logic) > Rebellious/Pride (Character) You see above that the same sinful behavior can have several Core sins underneath. We can tell people to stop doing that but without repentance in the logic and character (the mindset or noia ) at best the behavior will stop but the Core sin will emerge in another behavior, at worst people will feel as though they re being controlled, and if they repent they become legalistic (doing the actions without the heart) It takes discernment to identify what the Core sin might be might be, so much prayer is needed, but below is a frame work to give you a starting point when looking for someone s Core sin. Hands Head Heart Hands The behavior. What did you do? These actions are sin before God, but when helping people repent, identifying and corrections actions are not enough. Every action has an underlying rationale that you must draw out. Head The Logic/Reasoning/Excuses. What convinced you that was a good idea? or What did you get out of that? These are the reasons we give ourselves to excuse our behavior when we sin. We want to think as though when we do wrong, we somehow are doing good, or at least what s best for us. These reasons often expose our character and our Core. Heart The Attitude/Character/Emotion/Treasure. Why is that so important? The true character behind the sin behavior is here. It is the Core need we are satisfying, it is the value we are holding, is the attitude we are sticking to, it is the treasure we are getting. It is the answer to why you rationalized your sin. I went to the party because all my friends are going is probably driven by It is important for me to be liked and have friends. I looked at pornography because I was lonely is probably driven by I am afraid no one likes me and that I have no friends. Core sins drive behavior sins.

Examples of Core Sins Here are some examples (not all of course) and ways you can spot Core sins. Pride/Insecurity [Over thinking about yourself] The big one. You can make a case that every sin comes from pride. I wanted to look good I wanted to do it on my own I was worried about what people would think about me I didn t think that was my problem Selfishness [ How does this benefit me? ] I didn t feel like doing that I didn t want to I need to do me Worldliness [Being like the world] Fear Obsession with being cool Emphasis on fashion/celebrities Exalting worldly behavior Needing to be stylish I was afraid to I was worried about Rebelliousness I didn t think I needed to do that I know it s wrong but Anti-authority in general Deceitfulness Not telling the truth Covering up large sections of what happened Telling half-truths Apathy No fear of God or scripture Casual attitude toward sin, life in general Selfish Ambition A combination of selfishness and pride I m going to what benefits me and makes me look good regardless of what it do
