The Jews had a saying that In their thinking, if someone was handicapped physically, he had probably done a very terrible thing and God was punishing him for it. A man blind from birth created a difficult. How could he be punished for something that he didn t do? A Jew would think: a. b. Who are the spiritually blind in this story? v 9 the can t recognize him because they don t believe a miracle can take place. They were blinded by v 16 the couldn t see the Messiah in Jesus because he didn t keep their traditions concerning the Sabbath. They were blinded by vv 20 23 his seem to believe in the miracle and know that they should recognize Jesus as the Messiah (note v 22, they felt compelled to recognize it but feared to do so) because they were afraid. They were blinded by. 2. What divided the Jews? And who was right? v 16 v 16 Who was right? I ll see it when I believe it, vv 35 41 1. How and when does the blind man come to faith? Jesus finds him and the blind man must recognize his voice. Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you." (John 9:37). v 38. He identifies him as the one who made him see, believes and worships. 2. Why couldn t the Pharisees see? vv 40 41 because they already thought that they knew everything. Application 1. Lazarus must have died shortly after the messengers left Bethany, accounting for the four days that Lazarus had already been in the tomb when Jesus arrived; one day for the journey of the messengers, the two days when Jesus remained where he was, and a day for Jesus journey to Bethany. 2. Thomas is generally remembered for his doubting but in this story he demonstrated courage. 3. Many Jews believed that the soul remained near the body for three days after death in the hope of returning to it. If this idea was in the minds of these people, they obviously thought all hope was gone Lazarus was irrevocably dead. 4. Jewish custom provided for three days of very heavy mourning, then four of heavy mourning, followed by lighter mourning for the remainder of 30 days. 5. Martha called Jesus, The Teacher. This is a significant description to be given by a woman. The rabbis would not teach women, but Jesus taught them frequently. Application: 1. Did Jesus have close personal relationships with people? Would you like to have such a close relationship with him? 2. Do you believe that Jesus really raised Lazarus from the dead? If not, what other explanation can you give for this eye witness testimony given by John? 3. Are you ever afraid of death? 4. Do you think that Jesus truly understands what it means to suffer the loss of a loved one? Jesus gives life at the risk of losing his own, vv 38 57 1. Was there any hope that Lazarus was still alive? v 39 He stinketh kjv 2. What did Jesus say in his prayer to God? Why did Jesus pray aloud? vv 41-42 Thanks, reaffirmation. so they would believe 3. Gospel of John, Shawn Daggett, Harding University, Fall 2013, page 36 Notes: 1. In all four Gospels the Pharisees appear as Jesus principal opponents throughout his public ministry. But they lacked political power, and it is the chief priests who were prominent in the events that led to Jesus crucifixion. Here both groups are associated in a meeting of the Sanhedrin. It is interesting that they did not deny the reality of the miraculous signs but concentrated on the potential political consequences of Jesus life and action. 2. The Jews were afraid that the Romans would come and take away their place. This word in the original language of the NT could also be translated temple. In either case, they feared losing the little freedom and independence they had. 3. Josephus, an important historian of the time, states that the Sadducees were extremely rude. Caiaphas displays that kind of rudeness when he says, You know nothing at all! 4. When Caiaphas spoke of what was better he showed that his true interests were political. He didn t care whether or not Jesus was innocent. He just wanted to secure the future of the Jewish nation. The Jewish nation was eventually destroyed by the Romans (70 A.D.) even though they had killed Jesus. 5. Caiaphas words were truer than he realized. Jesus died, not to save the nation politically, but to save the entire world spiritually. Application: 1. If Jesus were just a good man, or just another prophet, why did the Jewish leaders need to kill him? What made Jesus so dangerous? 2. Why did Jesus bring out the best in some people, and the worst in others? 3. How does it make you feel to read that Jesus died not only for the Jewish nation but also for you? What does this sign tell us about Jesus in times of disorientation and difficulty? How is this story a microcosm? 1. Jesus is able v 21 If you had been here... vv 32, 37, 41-42 2. Jesus cares v 5 Jesus loved them, so much so he will go back, and die v 33, v 38 Jesus is deeply moved v 35 Jesus wept v 36 Even observers noted how Jesus loved him 3. Jesus is there, he is present in our suffering 4. Why was Mary s act such a beautiful expression of love? She was personally involved by wiping his feet with her hair. She risked being ridiculed for this. Application: In showing our love to Jesus, should we be guided more by practical considerations or by love and gratitude? What wonderful things has Jesus done for you and what are you doing to show your gratitude? 3. What were Martha s and Mary s roles? v 2 Martha served to honor Jesus. v 3 Mary worshipped This is a replay of Luke 10:38 42. "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41,42). Application: Christians must practice the important balance between service and worship. Which one do you lean more heavily toward? 4. How does Judas reaction contrast? Judas words and deeds had the putrid smell of selfishness. He wasn t truly concerned for the poor but for his own pocket. He was purely rational. 5. What can we learn from the parallel passages of Mark 14:1 10 and Matthew 26:6 13? Mk 14:3 They were at the house of Simon the Leper. She broke an alabaster jar and pour the perfume on his head. Not just Judas spoke badly about the waste. She was rebuked by Jesus disciples. Jesus defended her actions, she did what she could. Mk 14:9 Jesus foretold that she would be remembered wherever the Gospel is preached. Mk 14:10 Connected with Judas decision to betray Jesus. Note: This is not the same anointing as that of the sinful woman in Luke 7.

Tensions are at an all time high 1 week before his death/resurrection. The crowds are bursting with faith. Jealousy in gnawing at those who want to maintain control. Palm branches, from date palms, were a national symbol. Hosanna meant give salvation now or give victory now. 2. Even in this moment of Triumphal Entry, how is Jesus different than the expected Messiah figure? Kings of the time would ride on a horse, a symbol of war. Jesus chose to ride on a donkey as a symbol of peace. He made no rash cries for violence, but brought to mind Don t be afraid O daughter of Zion. Greeks Seek the Meek, vv 23 36 1. Who were these Greeks and why did they seek Jesus? Probably God-fearers. Admired the Jews but didn t totally convert. Jesus had just cleansed the Temple (cf Mark 11:15-17). They may have come to meet the man who dare take a stand for non-jews. Application: Note that it was Andrew that brought these people to Jesus. Are you known as one who brings people to Jesus? 2. What was Jesus message to his disciples and to these Greeks? vv 23 25 Sacrifice self to discover the real meaning of life v 26 Be united with Christ. vv 27 28 Take on the task v 31 Change the world vv 35 36 Trust in the light. This is Jesus response to doubt assailed would be believers. Note: Jesus made two references in this passage to the world in v 31. One for judgment and the other (v 32) in giving his life he would draw all men to himself. To believe or not to believe, that is the question, vv 37 49 1. According to v 42, what was the response of some of the Jewish leaders to Jesus? many believed in him they refused to confess their faith for fear why? they loved the praise from men more than the praise from God. Application: What does your commitment to confess your faith demonstrate concerning your love for praise? 2. What motivation does Jesus provide to call us over to complete unafraid faith? v 44 Belief in him is belief in God v 46 Belief in him sets us free from darkness v 47 Hearing his words means responsibility to keep them.

How did Jesus understanding of his identity and mission allow him to wash the Apostle s feet? v 1 He knew that the time had come to leave this world and to go to the Father. v 3 He knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. Application: What kind of man is always making confident statements about himself? What kind of man is incapable of helping if he s not getting paid or receiving recognition for it? Bragging or speaking of self is a sure sign of insecurity. Jesus feels no threat for himself. He entrusted himself to him who judges justly (1 Peter 2:23). 2. In what way did he show them the full extent of his love? full extent or cf NIV note, he loved them to the last. he gave his life he humbled himself as a servant John 15:13 Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 3. Why did Peter refuse to have his feet washed? He recognized how wrong it was for Jesus to wash his feet, stuck in pride, he wanted to be better than the others. They allowed it, he wouldn t. 4. Why is it that Peter can have no part with Jesus if he won t allow Jesus to wash his feet? this was symbolic of our salvation. We can t save ourselves and we need to be washed by Christ. Any one who has an independent attitude can t share in Christ s need each other kingdom. Mark 10:15 I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.. 5. What did Jesus mean by A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet? Literally and simply stating, just your feet are dirty Peter. The bath represents baptism, washing feet the forgiveness of sins that follow. If this allegory or symbolic meaning is correct, what does it mean to wash each other s feet? 6. What did Jesus intend to teach through this act? vv 13 16 If I, your Lord and Teacher (note inversion of order), then you ought to. You ought to wash one another s feet. Remember "Why do you call me, `Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? (Luke 6:46).

Illustration: A tourist watching a missionary clean the wounds of a leper said, I wouldn t do that for a million dollars. The missionary overhearing said, Neither would I. Journaling Moment: Take a few moments to reflect on the full impact of Jesus example. Who is God calling you to love and serve in this way? What will you do to follow Jesus in your relationship with this person? Vaccine against betrayal, vv 18 30 1. Why does Jesus warn of the upcoming betrayal? v 19 so that you may believe, Not only so they ll be prepared for this crushing blow, but to transform a potentially demoralizing and harmful deed into a cause for faith. Jesus had warned them earlier. Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!" (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.) (John 6:70-71). Note: Jesus washed the feet of the man who would betray him. His deeds of love were not based on worthiness but of need. 2. What is the meaning of this prophecy in v 18? It comes from Psalm 41:9. In a context in which a man of God is mocked by his enemies but his greatest anguish is that his bosom buddy would betray him. To lift his heel has the meaning of he has given me a great fall. The heel being the lowest part of the body, a dynamic equivalent would be to give low blow. 3. Why do you believe that Jesus is troubled in spirit? concern for Judas would be lost? hurt concern for his disciples. Encouraging Words, vv 31 38 1. What does Jesus say to encourage his disciples? v 31 this is not a moment of darkness but of glory. v 34 support each other in love. v 36 We ll be together again. 2. What are some reasons Jesus gives us to be comforted? v 2 There s plenty of room v 2 A place will be prepared v 3 He ll take us there v 4 We know the way to get there 2. Does Jesus make the exclusive claim to be the only way to the Father? v 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6). Faith check: On a scale to one to ten, ten being the strongest, evaluate your personal belief in this statement. 3. What is the relationship between Jesus and the Father? v 7 He is the mirror image of God, to see him is to see the Father. v 10 The Father is in Him. Application: Jesus came to replicate himself. How much are you a mirror image of Jesus? 4. According to Jesus, why should I believe these claims? v 10 The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. v 11 Miracles are a back up reason to believe. 5. Why must Jesus leave them? v 12 by leaving he will enable us to greater things. To send the Holy Spirit 6. What is the relationship between love and obedience? v 15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command. (John 14:15). v 21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." (John 14:21). v 23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. (John 14:23). 7. What will be the work of the Holy Spirit? v 16 He will be our counselor. Paraklete is one who is called to another s side. He will always be with us. v 26 He will teach the Apostles all things. v 26 He will remind the Apostles of everything Jesus had said. Application: Do you believe John? How does he remember? ation

True Vine= Jesus The Farmer= God Branch that bears no fruit= unfaithful disciple. Perhaps a reference to what Judas was and how he would end up. Fruit bearing branch= Christlike disciple Removing a branch= removing from the Church. Pruning= discipline such as Hebrews 12. This is the same Greek word for cleaning. καψαιρει from the same root as clean in v 3. They had already been pruned because of the word which he had spoken to them. Judas had been the unclean one. Bearing fruit= becoming Christlike, or developing his qualities. 2. What is the secret to bearing fruit? vv 4 5 Being connected to Christ. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. 3. What does it mean to remain in him? Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. (John 6:56). To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (John 8:31). If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. (John 15:7). 4. What are the three signs of being a disciple and where are they found? To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32). "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:34-35). This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. (John 15:8). Note: There is a summary of the former two together in vv 9 10. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 5. How has Jesus relationship with the disciples been enriched? v 14 He now calls them friends.

Although they will be his friends by obeying. v 14-15 Jesus has made everything known to them. Out of this world, vv 18 27 1. What warning does Jesus give them? v 18 The world will hate you. Note: The many times Jesus promised this: a. Mt 5:11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. b. Mt 10:22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. c. Mt 24:9 "Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. d. 1Jo 3:13 Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. Illus. We re not home yet. 2. Would the world be lost if Jesus hadn t come? Yes, For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:17). Otherwise what would be the sense of sending Jesus to the world? vv 22 24 They would not be guilty of the sin of rejecting him. 3. What other work is promised concerning the Holy Spirit? v 26 "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. (John 15:26).

What difficulties can the Apostles expect to encounter? v 2 put out of the synagogue. This would be a major shame with even economical repercussions. v 2 They will kill you. They ll do this because they really don t know God. 2. Again, what is Jesus reason for warning them? v 1 All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. v 4 so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. Someone to take Jesus place, vv 5 16 1. Who were the Apostles focused on? v 5 themselves. Jesus is about to face the greatest ordeal of his life and yet they can think only of themselves. Application: Are you so wrapped up in yourself that you don t notice the needs of others? 2. What is the Holy Spirit s work in regard to: v 8 the world? Convict it of guilt. Greek elencho meaning to expose, refute, convince, or convicted. Fulfilled in Acts. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" (Acts 2:37). v 9 sin? because of disbelief in Jesus. The Holy Spirit will work to convince them of their sin for not believing in Jesus. v 10 righteousness? because I m going to the Father. In his ascension Jesus is shown to be the only righteous man. He will sit at the right hand of God. (Phil. 2:5-11; Acts 2:33-36). v 11 judgment? prince of this world will be thrown out. There is justice, Satan will not be allowed to continue, he has been condemned. 3. But how does the Holy Spirit do these things? The Holy Spirit works through us. Example of Stephen. Acts 7:51 You always resist the Holy Spirit! ; to be a minister of Christ, proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:16). The Holy Spirit works through the Word. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, (Ephesians 1:13).

How much of the truth would be taught to the Apostles by the Holy Spirit? v 13 all the truth. Good grief, vv 17 33 1. What saying of Jesus puzzled the Apostles this time? v 16 Now you see me, then you won t a little while 2. What will be the stages of the metamorphosis of their grief to joy? v 20 when I die you will mourn while the world rejoices. v 21 the period of 3 days will be like labor pains. Illus. The pain of birth is one of the worst and most intense, but one that is quickly forgotten. My wife said after our first child, never again but we now have four children. v 22 After His resurrection they will be give a joy that can never be taken away. 3. How will their relationship with God change after the cross? vv 23 24 They will have direct access. you will ask in Jesus name directly to God. 4. What does Jesus predict about their lack of faith? v 31 can be translated as a question Do you now believe? v 32 you will all be scattered. 5. What is the ultimate consolation for those troubled by this world? v 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
Gospel of John, Shawn Daggett, Harding University, Fall 2013, page 46 John Chapter 17 The Heart of Jesus Last requests in prayer to the Father, vv 1 26 Note: Jesus promise of overcoming the world was immediately followed by prayer. Fulfillment of the promise is impossible without prayer, both for Him and for us. 1. What does Jesus request? For himself, vv 1 5? a. Glorify your son to the extent of the glory that he had before the world began. One the few times that Jesus asks something for himself (although even this is really for others.) b. How would this prayer be answered? When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. (John 13:31). Through his crucifixion. Jesus had a perfect sense of timing. Early in his ministry he refused to show his glory in a public way in the Cana wedding (2:4) but now his hour had come (cf. John 12:23; 12:27; 13:31). glorified in the Gospels is used in Jesus being seen for who he really was. (cf Luke 9:31-32). For his disciples, vv 6 19? These are defined in vv 6 8 as those who know you and that know that my teaching comes from you. a. vv 11, 15 protect them b. v 11, unify them, but note the purpose of the unity. c. v 13 give them full measure of joy d. vv 17 18 sanctify them. Sent into the world but called to be different. For Second Generation Believers, vv 20 26? a. v 21 unity. The model of our unity should be the Godhead. Just as you are in me and I am in you. Note: How is this unity possible? v 23 I in them and you in me. Only if we are individually connected with Jesus and we be connected to each other. If we aren t connected to each other can we really say that we are connected to Jesus? b. v 21, 23 purpose. That the world may believe that you have sent me. c. v 24 heaven. "Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am. 2. How is this unity described? v 11, It is relational. one as we are one and not institutional, credal v 13 joyful v23 complete, non minimalist. 3.
