WOMEN in CHURCH Part Three She did a short teaching on this subject and brought out some very good points. Those passages that seem to tell women to be quiet or keep silence, never is any of this addressing the pastor. It is always to the congregation, to keep order. Also, in wives being subject to their husbands, we must remember that wives are not subject to all men, only to their own husbands. So we don t enter a church setting and become subject to every man in the place. Page 1 of 23

Robin Jones Youtube Channel UNDERSTANDING THE CONTROVERSIAL SCRIPTURES IN 1 CORINTHIANS We have to understand that Paul wrote to the Corinthians while he was in Ephesus. This is stated in the first chapter of 1 Corinthians. 1 Cor. 1:1-2 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: Page 2 of 23

Stephanus, Fortunatus and Achaicus came to Paul while he was in Ephesus to discuss problems in the church. First we go to the last chapter in 1 st Corinthians to find this out. 1 Cor. 16:17-18 I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied. For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such. About the problems: 1 Cor. 1:10-11 Now I beseech you, brethren (brothers and sisters), by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them (which are of the house) of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Verse 12 shows us that they were fighting about whose teaching they were following or whose disciples they were. 1 Cor. 1:12-13 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? Gal. 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Page 4 of 23

We know that this church was not spiritually mature and there was much carnality (the world) in the church. 1 Cor. 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? Fornication: 1 Cor.5:1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father s wife. Judging: 1 Cor. 5:12-13 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without (outside the church the world)? Do not ye judge them that are within (inside the church)? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person. Ch. 6 deals with them not being able to settle disputes among themselves, but they were going before the world to let outsiders judge them. Page 5 of 23

Ch. 7 Paul begins to address the things that the church had written to him about. Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus would have brought that letter from the church to Paul. 1 Cor. 7:1-2 Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. (this is what the church wrote). Paul s reply: 1 Cor. 7:2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. And the rest of the chapter Page 6 of 23

They were not even taking communion properly and were eating as if they were eating dinner and drinking to the point of drunkenness. (1 Cor. 11:20-34) There were many things that this church was doing which were in error that Paul was addressing. Speaking in tongues men and women were doing it and the church was arguing about it. Within just a few verses there were two views presented. One is that tongues was for the unbelievers and one was that tongues was for the believers. We have to realize that one voice is the church and one voice is Paul here. 1 Cor. 14:21-22 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear Me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them Page 7 of 23

that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 1 Cor. 14:23-24 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: Page 8 of 23

WOMEN KEEP SILENT Whose view do you think this was for women to be quiet in church? Doesn t this remind you of the Pharisee type making up their own rules. This was the church s view: 1 Cor. 14:34-35 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. They were clinging to the traditions which silenced women. They were even trying to silence women who had the gift of the Holy Spirit and were speaking in tongues. They didn t like change. The thought that God poured His Spirit out on Page 9 of 23

both men and women who were equal in Christ clashed with everything they had always known. They were hoping Paul would back up their manly traditions. Paul was shocked at what they were trying to do to the women! 1 Cor.14:36-40 What? Came the Word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Page 10 of 23

Lord. But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. Wherefore, brethren (brothers and sisters), covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order. The view which forbids a woman to speak is absolute nonsense. Paul gave the Lord s Command to covet to prophesy and to let ALL speak with tongues. As to Paul s 2 questions: 1. Did the Word of God originate with you? John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. The Word came from Jesus, He is the Word. 2. Are you the only ones it has reached? Page 11 of 23

John 1:12-13 Bur as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons (Greek 5043 a child of either sex) of God, even to them that believe on His name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. So the Word of God had reached men and women. Being born of God supercedes being male or female. The old customs no longer applied and they never did. v. 34 as even the law says - There was no law to silence women in the OT. Under Roman law the father had power over his daughter and once married the power passed to the husband. Now let s go back to chapter 11 and tackle a few things. 1 Cor. 11:8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Page 12 of 23

Man is the origin of woman. They thought that origin mattered. Paul s view: The head/origin of every man is Christ, the head/origin of woman is man, and the head/origin of Christ is God. Christ is the origin of everyone. The origin of woman (singular) was man but that is only talking about Eve. Church view: 1 Cor. 11:9 Neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man. *The emphasis was on the man being more important because he was the origin.* Paul s view: 1 Cor. 11:12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. **Christ came by woman!!** Common sense tells us that every man since Adam is born of a woman. Page 13 of 23

1 Cor.11:5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. They wanted the women in the church to conform to traditions and customs. Page 14 of 23

Paul s view: 1 Cor.11:10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels (messengers). Give women authority over their own heads. Page 15 of 23

Paul says women should have independent authority over their own head to make up their own mind about what they put on it or what they leave off of it. BECAUSE OF THE ANGELS?? An angel is a message bearer. The writers did not translate angel as they did not translate satan in the Bible which means adversary. There are good and bad angels. 2 Cor. 11:14 And no marvel; for satan himself is transformed into an angel of light (transformed into a messenger of light). What does the Bible say about following different traditions? Col.2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. We must compare traditions and culture to what Jesus said. Acts 17:13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the Word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they cam thither also, and stirred up the Page 16 of 23

people. **Those Jews were about keeping traditions and were against God s Word.** So we see there are good and bad messengers. Corinth was still plagued by wrong messages by deceiving angels. 2 Cor. 11:3-4 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled (deceived) Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. Paul was warning them not to be deceived like Eve was. The message of the messengers: Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. God did create Eve for Adam, but God did not turn this in to a reason for man to elevate himself as her superior as these men in Corinth were doing. Paul says because of their wrong teaching, women should be given authority to make their own decision about what they wear or don t wear on their head. Her own authority (because of the misguided messengers). Paul is rejecting the traditions they are promoting. **In the old testament if a man suspected his wife of cheating on him there was a certain procedure that had to be followed before the LORD:** Numbers 5:17-18 And the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water: And the priest shall SET THE WOMAN BEFORE THE LORD, AND UNCOVER THE WOMAN S HEAD, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which is the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse: Page 17 of 23

There was never anything in the law (or Torah) commanding women to wear head coverings. ANOTHER TAKE ON BECAUSE OF THE ANGELS In the Book of Enoch it says that the leader of the fallen angels was called Azazel, and he is often identified with Lucifer (the Lightbringer) or Lumiel ( the light of God ). He taught men to forge swords and make shields and breastplates (body armour). Azazel also taught them metallurgy and how to mine from the earth and use different metals. To the women he taught the art of making bracelets, ornaments, rings and necklaces from precious metals and stones. He also showed them how to beautify their eyelids with kohl and the use of cosmetic tricks to attract and seduce the opposite sex. From these practices Enoch says there came much godlessness and men and women committed fornication, were led astray and became corrupt in their ways. This was the basis for the early Church condemning the fallen angels for teaching women to make necklaces from pieces of gold and bracelets for their arms. St Paul said that women should cover their head in the synagogue (Corinthians: 11:5-6). This was because the fallen angels were supposed to be attracted to human females with long flowing hair. The custom of women covering their hair in churches is still found in Roman Catholicism and also in the customs of Islam. Now think about this, the priesthood wore head coverings. Page 18 of 23

II Samuel 15:30-31 we see King David with his head covered praying before the Lord. Ezekiel 24:15,17&20 Ezekiel was told to put his head covering on. Remember praying in a prayer closet and in Jesus day it is taught that, that meant pulling your prayer shawl over your head and praying. Also when Paul says 1 Cor.11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? Page 19 of 23

Samson and Delilah Numbers 6:5 talks about the vow of a Nazarite in not cutting his/her hair. Leviticus 10:6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled. Look at Job 1:20 many times when it speaks of uncovering your head it is speaking of shaving your hair off in times of mourning or keeping a vow to God. Job 1:20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, Acts 18:18 And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow. Page 20 of 23

1 Cor. 11:4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. **This must be the church view based on tradition and culture because remember they wore prayer shawls and prayed with their heads covered back then, as well as the OT priest in the temple would have their heads covered.** NEW CREATION In verses 11-12 Paul reverses the thinking that the traditions are based on. Man is born of woman. Paul s final message: 1 Cor.16:15-17 I beseech you, brethren (brothers and sisters), (ye know the house of Stephanas, that is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,) That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth us, and laboureth. I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied. Stephanas was the 1 st fruits, he has devoted himself to good works submit. Also submit to Fortunatus & Achaicus who more than likely are those of Chloe. Women did, should and will always proclaim God s message. Huldah prophesied 2 Kings 22:14-20 Acts 2:17-18 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on My servants and on My handmaidens I will pour out in those days of My Spirit; and they shall prophesy: Peter was quoting from the book of Joel and he said it was happening in his day, how much more so is it happening now in our day. 1 Cor. 14:39- Wherefore, brethren (brothers and sisters), covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Page 21 of 23

Why do they need encouragement to speak? Because the church view was that women should be silent. But Paul s view was ALL should speak. CLOSING Don't hold anyone back from serving the Lord. He is the One Who calls and ordains. Jeremiah 1:5 - Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you; and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified you, and I ordained you a prophet unto the nations. We are living in the days that God said this: Joel 2:28-29 - And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters SHALL prophesy (preach), your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My Spirit. You can't stop the Spirit of the Lord, when He puts His Word in your heart - IT WILL COME OUT!! Let the women speak, don't go against God. If you are a woman and God has called you into the ministry and you have not answered your call, because of not understanding these scriptures, you need to repent and get busy doing what God called you to do.
