WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON JUNE 15, 2016 THOUGHTS FOR CHURCH PLANTERS PASTOR PAUL CHAPPELL

Title: Thoughts for Church Planters For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: (Titus 1:5) INTRODUCTION 1. The Priority of Biblical Principles A. Churches start. Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. (Acts 13:1 3) QUOTE: The Great Commission is not an option to be considered; it is a command to be obeyed. Hudson Taylor B. Church planters are to a sending church. And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled. 27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 3

with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. (Acts 14:26 27) C. Upon organization, the will call a pastor. For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: (Titus 1:5) And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. (Acts 14:23) D. The becomes accountable to the Lord and the body where he pastors. Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. 19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. (1 Timothy 5:17 20) E. A true church is sound. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. (Acts 2:42) But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. The Philosophy of a Biblical Church Planter A. Prepare a statement before you begin. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. (1 Timothy 4:6) In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. (Titus 2:7 8) B. Prepare a and bylaws before you begin. Let all things be done decently and in order. (1 Corinthians 14:40) For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ. (Colossians 2:5) SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 5

C. Look for older for encouragement and counsel. Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; (1 Timothy 5:1) But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,... 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; (2 Timothy 3:10, 14) Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. (1 Peter 5:5) Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:32) D. Be careful of working with a church. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: 6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; 7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. (1 Timothy 1:5 7) E. Recognize everything you do sets a. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12) The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. 2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits. 3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. (Proverbs 16:1 3) MUSIC DÉCOR WEDDINGS 6 THOUGHTS FOR CHURCH PLANTERS

F. Beware of the progressive/lukewarm. I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. (Revelation 3:15 16) G. Consider the of a thing. Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. (Ecclesiastes 7:8) H. Be with God, yourself, and your supporters regarding your philosophy. Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. (2 Corinthians 8:21) For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: 11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre s sake. 12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. 13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; (Titus 1:10 13) I. When assembling a team, remember that character matters more than. According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (2 Peter 1:3 4) J. Stay to those who influenced you. Thine own friend, and thy father s friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother s house in the day of thy SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 7

calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off. (Proverbs 27:10) K. Maintain a proper in ministry. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. (Luke 2:52) Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: 4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. (Proverbs 3:3 4) L. Use methods. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.... 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; (Ephesians 5:8 10, 18 19) M. Have in God. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. (Mark 11:22) N. Guard the from the earliest days. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. (Acts 20:28 31) Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4 For there 8 THOUGHTS FOR CHURCH PLANTERS

are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. (Jude 3 4) 3. Practical Matters for Church Planters A. Develop a calendar of preaching and events. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. (Luke 19:13) DEFINITION: occupy to carry on a business, the idea of continuing in the Lord s business For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. (1 Corinthians 14:33) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: (Ephesians 4:12) B. Choose a wisely. C. Launch in advance of church plant. D. Raise support, but begin by. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6) E. Develop a statement. Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. (Proverbs 29:18) Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war. (Proverbs 20:18) But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, (2 Timothy 3:10) F. Stand for biblical. SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 9

For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; (1 Thessalonians 1:9) G. Allow people time to. But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: 8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us. 9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God. (1 Thessalonians 2:7 9) QUOTE: Acceptance is the optimum environment for growth. H. Witness and knock on of doors weekly. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9) But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. (2 Corinthians 9:6) I. Disciple new Christians. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. (2 Timothy 2:2) J. Do not envy churches in the area. For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. (2 Corinthians 10:12) For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth. (Zechariah 4:10) K. quality equipment and facilities. 10 THOUGHTS FOR CHURCH PLANTERS

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23 24) L. Preach Bible-based messages. So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. (Nehemiah 8:8) DEFINITION: sense insight, understanding DEFINITION: cause them to understand to perceive, discern, to understand, know (with the mind); to observe, mark, give heed to, distinguish, consider Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (2 Timothy 4:2 4) QUOTE: He never did anything else but study. I kept rabbits, chickens, and pigs, and a horse; he kept books. He made such progress in his studies that I am sure there were few young men that were his equals and I do not know any that were his superiors. C.H. Spurgeon s brother Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15) Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. (2 Thessalonians 2:15) The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. (2 Timothy 4:13) I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 11

other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:6 10) M. Nurture your faithfully. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4) N. Plan training times and special preaching meetings. REVIVAL MEETINGS VOLUNTEER STAFF DEACONS ORIENTATION PREACHING CONFERENCES O. Define success. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. (Matthew 25:21) But refuse profane and old wives fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. (1 Timothy 4:7 8) P. Pray for the flock. CONCLUSION For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; (Colossians 1:9)
