anastasis nekros Questions & Answers 1 Corinthians 13: 9-10 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. Question: If this refers to Christ s second coming, then why is perfect not capitalized in 1 Corinthians 13:10? Answer: perfect is translated from the Greek word teleios which means something or someone complete. When Christ consummates his kingdom in his second coming, there will be no more sin, all will be made perfect and all will be united perfectly. So why is perfect not capitalized? Hebrews 12:2, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,. Jesus is the perfecter of our faith, but here the perfect refers to the fullness and completeness that will come with Jesus second coming. It does not refer to Jesus himself. 1

Recap Chapters 12-14 1 Corinthians 12 Immediate transition from carnalities to spiritualities, Now concerning spiritual gifts, Corinthians had previously been led astray into pagan worship Not everyone claiming Jesus is Lord is a true believer (Matthew 7: 21-23) There are a variety of spiritual gifts Spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit Spiritual gifts are given according to the sovereign will of God Spiritual gifts are given to believers in order to build up the church Prophecy A prophet declares the word of God Tongues Languages that are understood by men or angels Recap Chapters 12-14 1 Corinthians 12 (continued) Believers are all part of the body of Christ. We are united to Christ in baptism. Just as every part of the human body has a purpose, every part of the body of Christ has a purpose The parts of the body work together, not against each other Every believer is not an apostle, a prophet, a teacher, a miracle worker, a healer, a speaker of tongues, an interpreter of tongues All believers should desire the higher gifts (prophecy) All spiritual gifts are to be used in Love a still more excellent way 2

Recap Chapters 12-14 1 Corinthians 13 Although often read at weddings, this chapter on love refers to the love that Jesus Christ has for his church Love is patient, kind, does not envy or boast, not arrogant, not rude, does not insist on its own way, not irritable or resentful, does not rejoice at wrongdoing, rejoices with truth, bears all things, hopes all things, and endures all things Faith and Hope will eventually become knowledge Love will abide forever Recap Chapters 12-14 1 Corinthians 14 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy (1 Corinthians 14:1) Speaking in tongues is a means to an end, not the end itself If there is nobody to understand or interpret the tongues, then the person speaking in tongues should keep quiet Is the exercise of the gift building up the church? 3

1 Corinthians 14 Prophecy and Tongues (continued) 1 Corinthians 14: 26-33a 26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. t ti Let all things be done for Worship and teach with the purpose of building up building up. 27 If any speak in a tongue, lettherebeonlytwooratmostthree, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. 30 If Come together for worship and teaching Only one person may speak in atongueatatimeandthere must be an interpreter There should be no more than three people speaking a a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent. 31 For you can tongue in a worship service all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. 33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. Two or three prophets may speak and others should listen and discern what they are saying God is not a God of confusion, but of Peace 4

1 Corinthians 14: 33b-40 As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, i as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. 36 Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks that he Takenwith1Corinthians11:5,it is clear that women are not forbidden from all speech in church This appears to refer to public teaching and prophesying Paul uses sarcasm here If there remains anyone who is contentious, having not been is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge thatt the things I am persuaded by his previous writing to you are a command of the Lord. 38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But all things should be done decently and in order. arguments, he now refers to his apostolic authority as one who received by direct revelation from Jesus Christ Prophecy & Tongues Are these spiritual gifts still in use? Prophecy Teaching is still in use in the Church. However, we rely entirely on scripture. We have been given the Bible, the inerrant Word of God which communicates everything necessary for our salvation and building up of the body of Christ. If someone were to prophecy something not found in scripture, such prophecy would need to be heard and evaluated against scripture. Ultimately, if there prophecy does not come true, then they are a false prophet (see Deuteronomy 18:15-22) Tongues Not necessary. We have the ability to translate into numerous languages and are doing so. 5

1 Corinthians 15 Resurrection Resurrection In the Greek, anastasis nekros Literally, to stand up a dead corpse 6

1 Corinthians 15: 1-2 15NowIwouldremindyou,brothers,of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you unless you believed in vain. The gospel is: Preached Received We stand by the gospel We are being saved by the gospel Unless one were to have believed in vain 1 Corinthians 15: 3-11 3 For I delivered to you as of first What was preached? importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with Christ died for our sins the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance Christ was buried with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he Christ was raised on the third appeared to more than five hundred day brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 All of which was in accordance Then he appeared to James, then to all with the scriptures the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9 Christ appeared to many For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, There are many witnesses still living at this time because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. These are facts, not faith Faith is the trust that we have in God to fulfill the promises of scripture; in particular our eternal salvation 7

1 Corinthians 15: 3-11 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. Paul is humbled one untimely born is a phrase used with a premature birth or stillborn Paul was not worthy to be called an apostle by his own merit But Paul is an apostle by the grace of God This is a testimony to the power of God s grace So we preach and so you believed The apostles are unified in the message that they preach 1 Corinthians 15: 12-19 12 NowifChristisproclaimedasraised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? d? 13 But if there is no resurrection of The resurrection is essential to the dead, then not even Christ has our faith been raised. 14 And if Christ has not If Christ was not raised, all is lost been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, becausewetestifiedaboutgodthathe raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. Some Corinthians were saying that there was no resurrection 8

1 Corinthians 15: 12-19 12 NowifChristisproclaimedasraised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? d? But if there is no resurrection of Perished means utterly the dead, then not even Christ has destroyed without hope of been raised. 14 And if Christ has not redemption been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. Faith in Christ is futile if Christ was not raised If our hope is in this life only we are most to be pitied Prosperity gospel? Liberation theology? Best life now? These are other gospels and are accursed 1 Corinthians 15: 20-28 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came Luke 24: 36-43 36 As they were talking about these death, by a man has come also the things, Jesus himself stood among resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam them, and said to them, Peace to all die, so also in Christ shall all be made you! 37 But they were startled and alive. 23 Buteachinhisownorder:Christ frightened and thought they saw a the firstfruits, then at his coming those who spirit. 38 And he said to them, Why belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, are you troubled, and why do doubts when he delivers the kingdom to God the arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands Father after destroying every rule and and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch every authority and power. 25 For he must me, and see. For a spirit does not reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed have flesh and bones as you see that is death. 27 For God has put all things in Ihave. 40 And when he had said this, subjection under his feet. But when it says, all things are put in subjection, it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. 28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all. he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, Have you anything here to eat? 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them. 9

1 Corinthians 15: 20-28 20 ButinfactChristhasbeenraisedfrom the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 Buteachinhisownorder:Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 Thelastenemytobedestroyed is death. 27 For God has put all things in subjection under his feet. But when it says, all things are put in subjection, it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. 28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all. The firstfruits are the first part of the harvest and were offered as asacrificetogod Adam Sin Death Christ Resurrection 1 Corinthians 15: 20-28 20 ButinfactChristhasbeenraisedfrom the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For God has put all things in subjection under his feet. Christ was given all authority (Matthew 28: 18) Christ will bring all under subjection Christ will then deliver his conquest to God 10

1 Corinthians 15: 29-34 29 Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? Ifthedeadarenotraisedatall, whyare people baptized on their behalf? 30 Why are we in danger every hour? 31 I protest, brothers, by my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day! 32 What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. 33 Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals. 34 Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame. Rhetorical questions Sarcasm Why would Christians bear pain & suffering if there is no resurrection? Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die Bad company ruins good morals This was a saying of the Greek poet Menander. Wake up from the sin of unbelief 1 Corinthians 15: 35-41 35 But someone will ask, How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come? 36 You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. Two bodies Natural (of earth) Spiritual (of heaven) Both bodies are related We sow the natural body We don t discard the natural body, we sow it 11

1 Corinthians 15: 42-49 42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a living being ; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 Butitisnotthespiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, amanof dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. Perishable Imperishable Dishonor Glory Weakness Power Natural Spiritual Body Body bear the image of the man of heaven Glorification We will bear Christ s image of Glory 1 Corinthians 15: 50-55 50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. i 51 Behold! I tell you a Those that are dead will be raised imperishable mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable ih puts on the imperishable, i and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? All believers shall be changed at Christ s return Those that are living will be changed to imperishable 12

1 Corinthians 15: 50-55 50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. i 51 Behold! I tell you a Refers to Christ s victory over sin and death mystery. Paraphrase of Isaiah 25:8 and Hosea 13:14 1 Corinthians 15: 56-58 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. Death stings because we have sinned and because the Law condemns us for our sins God has given us victory over death through the forgiveness of our sins offered through Jesus Christ 13

1 Corinthians 15: 56-58 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
