MAY 8 11:00am Worship Wait First Then See Acts 1:1-11 Psalm 4:7 Rev. Mike Poole NO EVENING SERVICE Greetings from Pastor Mike Poole... Transition Team Update 103 people submitted lists of their prayerful nominations for Transition Team. These lists yielded a hearty supply of potential Transition Team members. Please continue in a prayerful posture throughout the ongoing process of bringing this team together. Sometimes the Lord works in surprising ways to bring about a healthy mix of personalities, gifts and skills. I will bring a more complete status report this coming Sunday. Mother s Day at ABC Recently a spicy, ninety year old woman proudly declared how active she has remained in spite of her age. I reminded her that the biblical woman Sarah delivered a child at 90 and I asked how she might top that. With a twinkle in her eyes, she fired back, I want to have twins! (Scary.) We celebrate Mother s Day with genuine gratitude and enthusiasm. Although it s a fairly recent cultural practice, I m glad it s on the church calendar. After all, motherhood is God s idea and a good one at that. Who can be born without one? Even so, Mother s Day creates quite a quandary for some. How? I ve noticed through the years that people experience Mother s Day with a broad array of emotions, including sadness. For example, what about those who recently lost a mother, or those who were young when their mother died or abandoned them? Still others may have mothers who were far from God s ideal, often evoking bitterness and anger in their children. What about would-be mothers who in God s providence have never been able to conceive or adopt? And what of mothers deeply wounded by prodigal children? (Often, the latter is accompanied by feelings of irrational guilt.) When preparing for Mother s Day, I try to be sensitive to ambivalent and complicated feelings. Please know that whatever the state of your emotions on this day, God s love for you is unwavering. He will never leave you alone. He will always nurture and lead you in paths of righteousness. He knows what s best, even when we do not understand. Whether you re 90 and wanting to have twins or you are a twin, find some ways to celebrate God s idea of motherhood. Visit a cemetery, write down or share a favorite memory, get together with siblings, send cards, or spend some time considering how else you will make this a day of thanksgiving and prayer. NOTE: as my sons treat their mother this Sunday, I will be flying out of Asheville to DeLand, FL to be with mine. I plan to fly from Asheville on Monday and return on Wednesday afternoon.
