ART ATTACK & MINDZEYE GALLERY What do you see in today s theme art or your own drawings? How do the art and the theme verse relate to each other? How do they relate to your highs and lows? A friend says there is no such thing as evil, the devil, or spiritual powers. Everything is simply a matter of personal choice. How do you respond? QUESTIONS TO PONDER Share your thoughts on the questions below 1. What do you think is the worst thing that can happen to a young person today? Why? QUOTATIONS TO CHEW ON For evil to triumph, it is only necessary that good people do nothing. Edmund Burke We learn little from victory, but much more from defeat. Catechism Connection Go over pages 198-200 in the Small Catechism and discuss. Use your catechism to help answer the following questions. 1. Once we assuage our conscience by calling something a necessary evil, it begins to look more and more necessary and less and less evil. Agree or disagree? In what ways do we try to justify our sinful choices and actions? 2. How can we daily put on the full armor of God to resist evil in our world? 3. I m but a stranger here, heav n is my home. Reflect on the joy of heaven, where in Christ all believers will experience full and final rescue from all evil. 4. In what forms does evil come into your life at school? with your friends? at home? 5. Not all evil comes into our life as a form of a choice. Accidents, illness, and hurts of all kinds result from the fall into sin. What signs of evil and brokenness do you see in our world today?
Christian Doctrine Excerpts from the Large Catechism This petition includes all the evil that may befall us under the devil s kingdom: poverty, shame, death, and, in short, all the tragic misery and heartache of which there is so incalculably much on earth. Since the devil is not only a liar but also a murderer, he incessantly seeks our life and vents his anger by causing accidents and injury to our bodies. He breaks many a man s neck and drives others to insanity; some he drowns, and many he hounds to suicide or other dreadful catastrophes. Therefore there is nothing for us to do on earth but to pray constantly against this archenemy. For it God did not support us, we would not be safe from him for a single hour (435:115-116). Thus you see how God wants us to pray to him for everything that affects our bodily welfare and directs us to seek and expect help from no one but him. But this petition he has put last, for it we are to be protected and delivered from all evil, his name must first be hallowed in us, his kingdom come amoung us, and his will be done. Then he will preserve us from sin and shame and from everything else that harms or injures us (436:117-118).
