Your presence both enriches us and this time of worship together. In the midst of the busy-ness of life, we have been gifted with this time and place to reconnect with God and with one another. We seek to discern a life beyond life and behold the larger reality Jesus revealed in his own life, death and resurrection. Our aim is spiritual growth, a deeper faith and a loving community. Today is Pentecost Sunday. The day we celebrate the arrival of the gift of the Holy Spirit as recorded in the Book of Acts. It is reported that the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples on the day of the Jewish festival of Pentecost. The Pentecost (or fiftieth day) was the Jewish harvest celebration, a dedication of the harvest to God the giver and provider of the people and the nation. It is believed to be connected with how the Torah was given to God s people at Sinai on the fiftieth day after the deliverance from Egypt. Just as the appearance of God on Sinai was the birthday of the Jewish nation, so was the Pentecost the birthday of the Christian Church. Pentecost Sunday is traditionally a day when the sacrament of Communion is celebrated in Protestant Churches. Since this is a long weekend, we will be celebrating Communion next Sunday, May 27. Prelude We Gather As God s People * VU 333 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Call to Worship When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:1-4a) Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people; and kindle in us the fire of your love. Give us the ability to speak your truth so that others may hear. Come, Spirit of Truth, fill our hearts. May that which was of stone be now transformed into life. Come, Spirit of Life, change our hearts. May we who receive your light dwell together in Your love. Come, Spirit of Love, soften our hearts. Bestow your compassion on those who suffer in mind, spirit, and body. Come, Spirit of Hope, heal our hearts. Make us bold to bring light to the dark places, warmth to the cold places, and love to the empty places. - 3 - Come, Spirit of Faith, strengthen our hearts. Spirit of the Living God, fill our hearts, minds, and souls to overflowing. Come, Spirit of God, move in our hearts That we might be moved to a life of deeper faith and service, and discover anew what your amazing love can do. Lighting of the Christ Candle We light this candle mindful that Christ is among us. Jesus is the Light of the World, bringing a light that shines in us and for us, illuminating the way of abundant Life. * Song Awake My Soul Breathe on me, breath of God, breathe on me Breathe on me, breath of God, breathe on me I come alive, I m alive when you breathe on me I come alive, I m alive when you breathe on me Awake, awake, awake my soul God resurrect these bones From death to life, through you alone Awake my soul Speak to me, word of God, speak to me Speak to me, word of God, speak to me I come alive, I m alive when you speak to me I come alive, I m alive when you speak to me Awake, awake, awake my soul God resurrect these bones From death to life, through you alone Awake my soul - 4 -

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
