THE ROAD TO EASTER Dr. Larry Osborne Message #3: The Recipe For A Miracle North Coast Church Luke 23:44-24:53 March 26-27, 2005 THE PASSAGE & RECIPE: A Really Big Mess. Luke 23:44-56/ Matthew 26:47-27:50/ John 20:19 THE RECIPE FOR A MIRACLE Luke 23:44 24:53 A Tiny Bit of Faith. Luke 24:1-49/ Mark 16:6-8 & 9-14/ John 20:24-29/ Luke 17:5-6 A Really Big God. LESSONS FROM AN EMPTY TOMB: Ephesians 1:18-23/ Romans 8:28/ Jeremiah 18:1-6 Nothing is too messed up for God. God is usually at work long before we notice. God shows up even when we doubt. God s solutions are often far different than what we expected.

Food for Thought For the week of March 27, 2005 (Questions and Scriptures for further study) 1. This week Pastor Larry pointed out that the big messes in our lives are also big opportunities for God to show up and be recognized for who He is, a really big God. Read the story of Peter s big mess and jailbreak in Acts 12:1-19. Why do you think it was difficult for Peter s friends to believe that he had been set free and that their prayers had been answered? Have you ever found it hard to believe that God could or has performed a miracle in your life? If so, why do you think that is? 2. Trusting God with real pieces of our own lives can be tough. Read the stories listed below and watch how people came to Jesus with significant needs. Some of these people had great faith, others were hanging on by a thread of hope or belief. Jot down where you see even a tiny bit of faith in each person that came to Jesus. Mark 9:14-26 14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. 16 What are you arguing with them about? he asked. 17 A man in the crowd answered, Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not. 19 You unbelieving generation, Jesus replied, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me. 20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy s father, How long has he been like this? From childhood, he answered. 22 It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us. 23 If you can? said Jesus. Everything is possible for one who believes. 24 Immediately the boy s father exclaimed, I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief! 25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. You deaf and mute spirit, he said, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again. 26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, He s dead. John 11:1-45

11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, Lord, the one you love is sick. 4 When he heard this, Jesus said, This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God s glory so that God s Son may be glorified through it. 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, Let us go back to Judea. 8 But Rabbi, they said, a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back? 9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world s light. 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light. 11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up. 12 His disciples replied, Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better. 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. 14 So then he told them plainly, Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him. 16 Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. 17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18 Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. 21 Lord, Martha said to Jesus, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask. 23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again. 24 Martha answered, I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this? 27 Yes, Lord, she replied, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world. 28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. The Teacher is here, she said, and is asking for you. 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. 32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 Where have you laid him? he asked. Come and see, Lord, they replied. 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, See how he loved him! 37 But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? 38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 Take away the stone, he said. But, Lord, said Martha, the sister of the dead man, by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days. 40 Then Jesus said, Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?

41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me. 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, Take off the grave clothes and let him go. 45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. Matthew 8:5-13 5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 Lord, he said, my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly. 7 Jesus said to him, Shall I come and heal him? 8 The centurion replied, Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, Go, and he goes; and that one, Come, and he comes. I say to my servant, Do this, and he does it. 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would. And his servant was healed at that moment. Mark 4:35-41 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, Let us go over to the other side. 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, Teacher, don t you care if we drown? 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, Quiet! Be still! Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith? 41 They were terrified and asked each other, Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him! Is there a need that you want to bring to Jesus or a place you would like to see your faith grow? 3. The Bible is rich with stories that show God working out His plans long before His people notice what He is doing. Read Jeremiah 29:11-13, John 6:35-40 and John 15:9-17 to get a glimpse of God s plan for His people. How does knowing God s plan for you impact your relationship with Him? Jeremiah 29:11-13 11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

John 6:35-40 11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. John 15:9-17 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit fruit that will last and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.
