New Employee W e are always happy to announce when we have a new employee to add to our beleaguered staff. J Sherrie West has recently joined Hope International s team of dedicated workmen. She has worked for the church, as part of the Review and Herald Publishing Association staff, and for the world in several capacities and has even owned her own business. She is a Graphic Design artist by trade and does so much more here than graphic design. She has graphic design work on so many different projects it is hard to know where to start. She has a very large portfolio of work that is impressive to say the least. But she has walked away from all of the graphic design work for the world and wants to apply her talents, that she fully recognizes comes from God, to the work the Lord would have her do. Sherrie s mother had been praying for such a long time for the Lord to work in Sherrie s behalf and bring her closer to Him. And Sherrie says that the Lord has more than answered her mother s prayers. The goal of her life is to be of service to her Lord and to help others know Him. It has been such a blessing to get to know Sherrie and to see her love and devotion for God manifested in the work that she does. Her desire for others to get the most out of the message, and her eye for the graphic end of things, knowing that a picture is worth a thousand words, has already proved a great blessing to the work here at Hope. For that, we, and the thousands that will be touched by her work, are eternally grateful. 4 Good News Newsletter July-August

Who s Your Daddy? O ne morning, they were eating breakfast in a little restaurant, hoping to enjoy a quiet, family meal. While they were waiting for their food, they noticed a distinguished looking, white haired man moving from table to table, visiting with the guests. The professor leaned over and whispered to his wife, I hope he doesn t come over here. But sure enough, the man did come over to their table. Where are you folks from? he asked in a friendly voice. Oklahoma, they answered. Great to have you here in Tennessee, the stranger said. What do you do for a living? I teach at a seminary, he replied. Oh, so you teach preachers how to preach, do you? Well, I ve got a really good story for you. And with that, the gentleman pulled up a chair and sat down at the table with the couple. The professor groaned and thought to himself, Great, just what I need--another preacher story! The man started, See that mountain over there? (pointing out a restaurant window). Not far from the base of that mountain, there was a boy born to an unwed mother. He had a hard time growing up, because every place he went, he was always asked the same question. Hey boy, who s your daddy? Whether he was at school, in the grocery store or drug store, people would ask the same question. Who s your daddy? He would hide at recess and lunchtime from other students. He would avoid going into stores because that question hurt him so much. When he was about 12 years old, a new preacher came to his church. He would always go in late and slip out early to avoid hearing the question, Who s your daddy? But one day, the new preacher said the benediction so fast, he got caught and had to walk out with the crowd. Just about the time he got to the back door, the new preacher, not knowing anything about him put his hand on his shoulder and asked him, Son, who s your daddy? The whole church got deathly quiet. He could feel every eye in the church looking at him. Now everyone would finally know the answer to the, question, Who s your daddy? The new preacher, though, sensed the situation around him and using discernment that only the Holy Spirit could give, said the following to the scared little boy. Wait a minute! he said. I know who you are. I see the family resemblance now. You are a child of God. With that, He patted the 6 Good News Newsletter July-August

boy on his shoulder and said. Boy, you ve got a great inheritance. Go and claim it. With that, the boy smiled for the first time in a long time and walked out the door a changed person. He was never the same again. Whenever anybody asked him, Who s your Daddy? He d just tell them, I m a child of God. The distinguished gentleman got up from the table and said, Isn t that a great story? The professor responded that it really was a great story! As the man turned to leave, he said, You know, if that new preacher hadn t told me that I was one of God s children, I probably would never have amounted to anything! And he walked away. The seminary professor and his wife were stunned. He called the waitress over and asked her, Do you know that man who just left that was sitting at our table? The waitress grinned and said, Of course. Everybody here knows him. That s Ben Hooper. He s the former governor of Tennessee! Submitted by James Watt Hope International www.hopeint.org 7

Offerings A s you pour out your thank offering, God is glorified, and He gives you more. As you pour out thanksgiving He gives you more joy. We learn to praise God from whom all blessings flow. RC 285 Right Now We only have so long to live, upon this earth at best: Our years will come at last to end, but will we pass God s test? Probation is a special time, when we decide our fate: Each day we re making choices here, that carry lots of weight. When humans die no further hours, are theirs to win God s prize: We do not think or reason then, or see with wisdom s eyes. Tithe Hope International does not solicit tithes; however we are a tithe-worthy organization and accept tithes. We use the tithe only for the gospel ministry. Donations designated Gospel Ministry will be considered tithe. Our love is gone; we do not hate, when in the tomb we lie: So we should do our best right now, before we have to die. To take advantage of our lives, God gives us day by day, We must obey and serve the Lord, and He will faith repay. REL Hope International www.hopeint.org 9

The Gingham Dress A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston, and walked timidly without an appointment into the Harvard University President s outer office. The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard, and probably didn t even deserve to be in Cambridge. We d like to see the president, the man said softly. He ll be busy all day, the secretary snapped. We wait, the lady replied. For hours the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn t, and the secretary grew frustrated. She finally decided to disturb the president, even though it was a chore she always dreaded. Maybe if you see them for a few minutes, they ll leave, she said to him. He sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn t have time to spend with them, and he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer office. The president, stern faced, and with dignity, strutted toward the couple. The lady told him, We had a son who attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on campus. The president wasn t touched. He was shocked. Madam, he said gruffly, we can t put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery. Oh no, the lady explained quickly, we don t want to erect a statue, we thought we would like to give a building to Harvard. The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and the homespun suit, then exclaimed, A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical buildings here at Harvard. For a moment, the lady was silent. The president was pleased. Maybe he could get rid of them now. The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don t we just start our own? Her husband nodded. The president s face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. Mr. And Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California, where they established a university that bears their name, Stanford University, a memorial to a son who Harvard no longer cared about. You can easily judge the characters of others by how they treat those who think they can do nothing for them. A TRUE STORY by Malcolm Forbes 10 Good News Newsletter July-August

God and During World War II, a US marine was separated from his unit on a Pacific island. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and crossfire, he had lost touch with his comrades. Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed. As he waited, he prayed, Lord, if it be your will, please protect me. Whatever your will though, I love 12 Good News Newsletter July-August

the Spider you and trust you. Amen. After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close. He thought, Well, I guess the Lord isn t going to help me out of this one. Then he saw a spider begin to build a web over the front of his cave. As he watched, listening to the enemy searching for him all the while, the spider layered strand after strand of web across the opening of the cave. Hah, he thought. What I need is a brick wall and what the Lord has sent me is a spider web. God does have a sense of humor. As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hideout and could see them searching one cave after another. As they came to his, he got ready to make his last stand. To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they moved on. Suddenly, he realized that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered for quite a while. Lord, forgive me, prayed the young man. I had forgotten that in You, a spider s web is stronger than a brick wall. We all face times of great trouble. When we do, it is so easy to forget what God can work in our lives, sometimes in the most surprising ways. And remember, with God, a mere spider s web becomes a brick wall of protection. I humbled myself before God, and earnestly presented my petitions at the throne of grace. My faith was tried to the utmost. I received no direct evidence that my prayers were answered, but I decided to go to work as though I had received the help so greatly needed. ST, January 19, 1882 We must take hold of the work as though we meant work. We must move surely and as though the truth was a reality. We don t work in the best way, brethren. Time is short. Out-general the enemy at every point. Take his strongholds. God help you, my brethren, to fasten your hold upon infinite power and also strongly upon your fellow men, and draw them up with you. 7MR 39 14 Good News Newsletter July-August

Time & Chance The trials of life seem hard to bear; we fear tomorrow s scenes: Will something happen to upset? We wonder what it means. In every life some rain must fall; we do not understand; The reasons days aren t always nice and ruin things we ve planned. Yet God allows each heart and mind, to meet temptations sore, To see if we will let Him lead, and to us hope restore. We re not alone along the path, we travel day by day: The angels linger by our sides, and long to guide our way. God s special folks aren t recognized, or honored by the crowd: But He will honor them at last, who have His plans allowed. Hope International www.hopeint.org 15
