SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST PROPER 9 July 8, 2018 AS WE GATHER God s power, grace, and mercy stands in contrast to our weakness. The psalmist urges us to lift up our eyes to God, especially in times of distress. In the Old Testament Reading, Ezekiel is sent to rebellious Israel to speak the Word of the Lord. Likewise, in the Gospel, Jesus comes to His hometown to teach, but He is rejected. And in the Epistle, we find the theme in its clearest depiction as Paul boasts and rejoices in his weakness, because when he is weak, then he is strong, and God most clearly showcases His power, grace, and mercy. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC THE WELCOME THE RITE OF FRIENDSHIP PREPARATION OPENING SONG Here I am to Worship Light of the world you stepped down into darkness Opened my eyes let me see beauty that made this heart adore You Hope of a life spent with You Chorus: So here I am to worship. Here I am to bow down Here I am to say that You're my God And You're altogether lovely. Altogether worthy. Altogether wonderful to me King of all days oh so highly exalted Glorious in heaven above humbly You came to the earth You created All for love's sake became poor 3

So here I am to worship. Here I am to bow down Here I am to say that You're my God And You're altogether lovely. Altogether worthy. Altogether wonderful to me And I'll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross And I'll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross So here I am to worship. Here I am to bow down Here I am to say that You're my God And You're altogether lovely. Altogether worthy. Altogether wonderful to me INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Beloved in the Lord, each of us has rebelled against God and rejected His will, His ways, and His commands. We were born in sin and weakness. We cannot escape our rebellious condition on our own. Let us then confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father. Silence for reflection. P: Heavenly Father, C: we confess that we have rejected Your ways and sought our own. We have rebelled against Your almighty rule, trying to be the masters of our own lives. We have failed to love You with all our heart. We have failed to love our neighbors as ourselves. We have failed to love our enemies as You commanded. Forgive us by Your power, mercy, and grace. P: In the power, mercy, and grace of almighty God, Jesus Christ died and was raised for you. On account of Christ and His all-sufficient grace, God forgives you. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. His grace is sufficient for us. His power is made perfect in weakness. 4

WORD INTROIT Psalm 132:13 16; antiphon: Psalm 34:8 P: Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! C: For the Lord has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling place: P: This is my resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it. C: I will abundantly bless her provisions; I will satisfy her poor with bread. P: Her priests I will clothe with salvation, and her saints will shout for joy. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! KYRIE p. 152 ALL Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. HYMN OF PRAISE How Majestic is Your Name O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify Your name, Prince of Peace, mighty God, O Lord God Almighty. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify Your name, Prince of Peace, mighty God, O Lord God Almighty. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify Your name, Prince of Peace, mighty God, O Lord God Almighty. 5

SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Almighty God, Your grace is sufficient for us. When we are weak and suffering, point us back to You, our source of strength and comfort, that we rejoice in Your power, mercy, and grace, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Ezekiel 2:1 5 And he said to me, Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you. 2 And as he spoke to me, the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. 3 And he said to me, Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. 4 The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD. 5 And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know that a prophet has been among them. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. GRADUAL ALL: Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. On your wondrous works, I will meditate, and I will declare your greatness. EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 12:1 10 I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. 3 And I know that this man was caught up into paradise whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows 4 and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. 5 On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses 6 though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears 6

from me. 7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE ALL: Alleluia. They cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Mark 6:1 13 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the sixth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him. 4 And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household. 5 And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching. 7 And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff no bread, no bag, no money in their belts 9 but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. 10 And he said to them, Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them. 12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. 7

CREED Nicene Creed C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY God s Mercy Flows to All in Need Tune: LSB 344 God s mercy flows to all in need Through Christ s atoning, loving deed. His grace sufficient is outpoured, Rememb ring all our sins no more. 8

For through His blood we now have gained Redemption from our lives once stained. We re cleansed forever in Christ s name From sin and guilt and utter shame. Dear Lord and Savior, help us see The Gospel and its mystery. For Christ averts our certain doom By passion, cross, and empty tomb. We would not know where to begin To save ourselves from deadly sin, But Christ who died and rose as King Has freed us from death s binding sting. All praise to Jesus Christ our Light, Redeemer from our sinful plight, Whom with the Father we adore And Holy Spirit evermore. Text: Andrew R. Jones. P: Maker of heaven, bless with healing and restoration according to Your will those who are weak and suffering, [especially...]. In their time of trouble, assure them of Your presence and love. Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: Maker of earth, give us faith to receive the body and blood of our Savior for our blessing, that we would rejoice in the forgiveness, life, and salvation You give us in Your Supper. Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: Into Your hands, O God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy. C: Amen. SILENT PRAYER The congregation is encouraged to take a few moments to pray silently for anything that weighs heavily on our hearts. We are also encouraged to pray for those in our lives who do not know Christ that the Holy Spirit may work powerfully to bring them to saving faith. 10

SACRAMENT We believe, teach and confess that in the Lord s Supper, Christ comes to us and his body and blood are really present to forgive our sins and assure us of everlasting life and salvation. We, as baptized believers, prepare for Communion by examining ourselves, repenting of our sins, anticipating our Lord s forgiveness and drawing on Christ s power in the Sacrament to help us live an amended life for Christ. To those who share this confession with us, we invite you to join us as we welcome you to the Lord s Table. PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. [Colossians 3:1] C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. [Psalm 136] C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for You sent Your Son to calm storms, heal the sick, and forgive the sinner by His life, death, and resurrection. Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS Holy, Holy God of Power Tune: LSB 848/849 Holy, holy God of power, God of mercy, God of grace, Heav n and earth are filled with glory, Praising You in ev ry place. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING p. 161 P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have shown grace to Your weak and sinful creatures and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. 12

Concordia Lutheran Church s Covenant with One Another How Do We Love One Another at Concordia Lutheran Church? 1. We will behave in a spirit of forgiveness always speaking well of others with love and kindness knowing that God created every human being in His image and we will always show respect for others despite our mutual failures, acknowledging shortfalls and willing to forget prior harms. 2. We will promote and practice honest conversations following the 8 th Commandment to speak well of each other, avoiding gossip by redirecting people to the appropriate person and avoiding anything that would cause divisions in the Body of Christ. 3.
