W e e k o f J u n e 7, 2 0 0 9 God Gave Rules to the People Teacher Connection Three months after leaving Egypt, the Israelites camped at Mount Sinai. In this location, God spoke to His people and communicated what He wanted them to do. Read Exodus 19:1-24. In a mountain meeting, God told Moses to get the people ready to be in God s presence. What were the people to do? Why do you think this preparation was necessary? How do you prepare for Sunday School and church, for being in God s presence? Ask God to show you how to prepare yourself to meet with Him. When God came on the third day, how did He manifest Himself? The Ten Commandments reveal who God is and what He wants His people to be. Read Exodus 20:1-17. The first four commandments deal with the people s relationship or response to God. The Israelites had been in Egypt, where worshiping many gods was common. Adding one more god to the list would have been insignificant, but the command to worship the only true God was unique. Think about your relationship with God. How do you honor God as the one true God? How do you observe the Sabbath? Are some things in your life more important than God, becoming like an idol? The last six commands remind us of God s lordship in our relationships. Jesus extended the commandments beyond actions (Matthew 5:21-28). The commands of God should permeate our lives thoroughly so even our thoughts are impacted. Do your relationships with others and your thoughts toward them reflect the same heart as your relationship to God? The Israelites learned of God s Word and His commands through the Ten Commandments and through the teachings of Moses. We learn of God s commands through the Bible, His Word to us. Ask God to guide you this week as you seek to live in ways that reflect the message of the Bible. Bible Passage Exodus 19:1 20:20 Bible Truth I can do what the Bible tells me to do. Connecting with Bible Content in 30-50 minutes As children participate in the learning centers, briefly tell the Bible story and help them say the Bible verse. Sing songs for this session. Work a Puzzle Center: Puzzles and Manipulatives God gave rules to the people to obey. Materials: Bible, outdated catalogs and magazines, construction paper, glue stick, index cards, marker, magnetic tape, gift bag, metal baking sheet, Kindergarten Connection weekly pages, pencils > Before the session, cut out a few pictures of children obeying and disobeying from the catalogs and magazines. Attach the pictures to colorful paper. Prepare two index cards on which you have printed the words obey and disobey. Put magnetic tape on the back of the pictures and index cards. Place the pictures in the bag and the index cards on the baking sheet. > Read the story on the weekly page. Guide each child to circle the picture that shows a child doing what God says. Repeat with the second story. > Point to the Bible verse on the weekly page and help a child read: We will do what God says (Exodus 19:8). > After a child chooses a picture from the bag, ask: Is this child obeying or disobeying? Guide her to put the picture under the correct word (obey or disobey) on the cookie sheet. >> KID Connection This Bible story teaches that we can learn to do what the Bible tells us to do. Make a Trumpet Center: Creative Art The Ten Commandments were written on tablets. Materials: Bible; paper towel rolls; waxed paper; rubber bands; markers; crayons; stickers; teaching picture (Pack Item 1); Bible Word Cards commandments, trumpet (Pack Item 14) > Cut a 5-by-5-inch square of waxed paper for each child. > Tell today s Bible story. Review the meaning of the word commandments. > Children can decorate the outside of their paper towel tubes. Help each child place a square of waxed paper over one end of the tube and secure it with a rubber band. Poke a row of holes along the side of each child s trumpet. > Show the teaching picture and the word card trumpet. Say: God told the people to listen for the sound of a trumpet. >> Kid Connection Say: This story teaches us that the Bible tells us what to do. Set Up a Laundromat Center: Dramatic Play God told the people to get ready and wash all of their clothes. Materials: Bible, Washer/Dryer Dials (enhanced CD), two large boxes, brad fasteners, markers, Music and More CD, CD player, various empty and sealed laundry containers, clothes basket, clean clothes, flat rock, sturdy cardboard tube, book How Did People in Bible Times...? (Pack Item 17) > Before the session, print out the Washer/Dryer Dials and decorate the boxes to make a washer and dryer. Use brads to attach the dials. Open your Bible to Exodus 19:8. > As kindergartners pretend to do laundry, play In Everything! Everywhere! (track 13). > Tell the Bible story. Inquire: What did God ask the people to do? State: The people said we will do what God says (Exodus 19:8). > Read the book How Did People in Bible Times...? Suggest children use the cardboard tube as a stick and the rock to wash clothes like they did in Bible times. Ask: Why do you think it is important to obey God? >> Kid Connection God told the people to wash their clothes and get ready to hear the commandments. We can read the Bible and learn to do what God tells us to do. Week of June 7 11

Connecting with Bible Content in Learning Center Activities continued Sort Sets of 10 Center: Blocks, Puzzles and Manipulatives God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. Materials: Bible, 10 margarine containers, paper clips, tiny LEGO blocks, milk carton lids, other small items in sets of 10 > Place the margarine tubs in the center of the table. Arrange a collection of the materials to be sorted and counted. > As children identify a new set, invite them to count out 10 pieces from that set and place them in a margarine container. Repeat with all of the other items. > As children work, talk about today s story. Ask: How many rules did God give Moses and the people? > Read each commandment and talk about its meaning. Read the Bible verse. Comment: The Ten Commandments are one way the Bible helps us know what to do. Build a Mountain Center: Blocks Moses went up the mountain to talk to God. Materials: Bible, Lincoln Logs or other building blocks, newspaper, child s jump rope, craft sticks, fabric scraps, chenille stems, modeling clay > Children can use the materials to make a mountain and stick people. The modeling clay can help the stick people stand. The newspaper can be wadded and placed in the center of the mountain to give it volume. > Tell the Bible story. Say: God told the people to set up boundaries around the mountain. What do you see that would work for a boundary? (jump rope) >> KID Connection Ask: What was one thing God said to do? What are some ways you can obey God? Bonus Ideas Dig for Treasure Print today s Bible verse (enhanced CD). Roll several copies of the Bible verse tightly and bury them in the container of sand. Kindergartners can dig with their hands for buried treasure. Read the verse after they find it. Paint a Mountain Provide painting smocks, tempera paint, paintbrushes, and paper. Invite each child to paint a mountain. Talk about the Bible story as they paint. >> KID Connection Comment: God gave rules to the people so they would know what to do. The Bible teaches us what to do. 5-10 minutes Help the children learn responsibility and care of the church through cleanup. Walk to each activity area and quietly remind kindergartners to finish their work. Play God s Plan (track 3) while teachers and kindergartners clean up together. 1 2 Kindergarten Leader Guide

Connecting with Bible Truths in 15-20 minutes Engage children in Group Time. God Gave Rules to the People Exodus 19:1 20:20 Materials: Bible; teaching picture (Pack Item 1); Bible Word Cards commandments, trumpet (Pack Item 14); Music and More CD and player; Bible Markers (Pack Item 15a) Prepare. Gather materials needed for group time. Practice the song The Ten Commandments (track 1). Mark the Bible story and Bible verse in your Bible. Listen and move. Ask: Can you reach up high? Can you touch your toes? Can you wave your arms? Can you touch your nose? Can you put your arms out straight and give a little clap? Can you fold your hands and place them in your lap? Identify words and tell the Bible story. Hold both word cards facing you. Choose one kindergartner to select a word card. Read the word, giving its definition. Repeat with the other word card. Say: Listen for these two important words as I tell you our Bible story. Bible Story When the people of Israel left Egypt, God led them to camp at the bottom of a mountain. Moses went up the mountain. God said to him, Moses, remind the people how I have helped them. Tell them I want them to obey Me. I am coming in a cloud to speak to you. The people will see and hear. Tell them to get ready to wash all of their clothes and to set up boundaries around the mountain. Tell them to look for a thick cloud and to listen for the sound of a trumpet. Moses went down the mountain and told the people what God had said. They replied, We will do what God tells us to do. They did everything God had told them. After three days, the people saw a thick cloud. They heard the sound of a trumpet. Moses went up the mountain to talk to God again. God wanted the people to know what they should do and how they could obey Him. God told Moses and the people to obey these ten special rules, or commandments. Do not worship anyone but God. God is the only God. Do not worship anything you have made. Always say God s name in a respectful way. Work on six days. On the seventh day, rest and worship God. Honor and respect your mother and father. Do not kill anyone. Husbands and wives should keep their wedding promises to each other. Do not take something that belongs to someone else. Do not tell lies about other people. Always tell the truth. Do not wish for things that belong to other people. Sing, sway, and review. Invite children to stand and sway to the music as they sing The Ten Commandments (track 1). As the song ends and children sit down, show the teaching picture. Ask for a volunteer to tell one thing she remembers from the story. Continue until the Bible story has been reviewed. Spend some time talking about the Ten Commandments and what each one means. Make life application and pray. Use your Bible and Bible marker to read today s Bible verse. Comment: This Bible story teaches us some things we are supposed to do. Can you name one? Listen as children take turns telling something they have learned to do after hearing today s Bible story. >> Family Connection Send home the June Parent E-mail (enhanced CD). Give each child a Kindergarten Connection weekly page. If you have limited time or teaching staff and need a Quick Plan, include these activities to achieve today s Bible teaching and life application at group time. Week of June 7 13
