2/14/2011 The book of Acts holds several keys to understanding the letters written during the 1 st century The Result of Peter s visit with Cornelius Acts 11:1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. Peter gives his account to the apostles The Letters and Acts Part 2 Pastor Art Palecek There was also a great famine that was prophesied by Agabus: Acts 11:27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. 28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. Acts 11:18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life Result of the scattered believers (diaspora) Acts 11:19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. 20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. The Result Acts 11:22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. Acts 11:25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: 26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch Josephus says that the famine began in the year of Herod s death-44 CE Barnabus and Paul send relief Acts 11:29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea: 30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul. Acts 12 is a pinnacle point: Peter is imprisoned, James the brother of John is killed Acts12:12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. Col 4:10 Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son (cousin) to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;) Your Notes Acts 12 can be dated to precisely 44 CE Herod Agrippa I died in the 7 th year of his reign-josephus He began to reign in 37 CE with the accession of Caligula 37 + 7 =44CE Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us1 P a g e

The 3 Itineraries of Paul 1 st Itinerary: Acts 13-16:5 1 st Itinerary Acts 13:1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. 4 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus :5 And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. Acts 13:13 Now Paul and his company set sail from Paphos, and came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem. :14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. 15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. 16 Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience. Acts 13:42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. 23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. 26 And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled. 27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. 28 And there they abode long time with the disciples. The council at Jerusalem Acts 15:1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. 2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem 1.The Pharisitical opinion was that they must be circumcised to be saved Acts 15:5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, **More clearly reads from the Revised Standard version: Acts 15:5 But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up, and said, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses." They believe from the teaching of the Pharisees as opposed to the teaching of Torah Your Notes In Derbe & Lystra Acts 14:21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, 22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us2 P a g e

The phrase: to keep the Torah of Moses Keep: threw tereo-to guard or watch-referring to putting up of a fence This amounted to Gentiles having to convert to Judaism first (circumcision) in order to be saved. Acts 15:6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. 7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. 8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they. purifying their hearts by faith : Romans 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. The Yoke is the Oral law:-traditions of the fathers that are halachic legal requirements What did Peter teach to Cornelius s household? Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. (Gal 2:4) There were traitors of false brothers, who had crept in to spy out the freedom we enjoy in Christ Jesus; they did aim at enslaving us again. (Gal 2:5) But we refused to yield for a single instant to their claims; we were determined that the truth of the gospel should hold good for you. Gal 2:6) Besides, the so-called 'authorities' (it makes no difference to me what their status used to be God pays no regard to the externals of men), these 'authorities' had no additions to make to my gospel. (Gal 2:7) On the contrary, when they saw I had been entrusted with the gospel for the benefit of the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been for the circumcised (Gal 2:8) (for He who equipped Peter to be an apostle of the circumcised equipped me as well for the uncircumcised), (Gal 2:9) and when they recognized the grace I had been given, then the so-called 'pillars' of the church, James and Cephas and John, gave myself and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship. Our sphere was to be the Gentiles, theirs the circumcised. 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face. The man stood self-condemned. 12 Before certain emissaries of James arrived, he ate along with the Gentiles ; but when they arrived, he began to draw back and hold aloof, because he was afraid of the circumcision party. 13 The rest of the Jews also played false along with him, so much so that even Barnabas was carried away by their false play.(dissimulation-hypocrisy) :14 But I saw they were swerving from the true line of the gospel; so I said to Cephas in presence of them all, "If you live llike the Gentiles and not like the Jews, though you are a Jew yorself, why do you oblige the Gentiles to become Jews?" :15 We may be Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners,' Your Notes Why would Gentiles be excited about remission of sin? Paul refers to an incident in Antioch: (Gal 2:1) Then, fourteen years later, I went up to Jerusalem again, accompanied by Barnabas; I took Titus with me also. (Gal 2:2) (It was in consequence of a revelation that I went up at all.) I submitted the gospel I am in the habit of preaching to the Gentiles, submitting it privately to the authorities, to make sure that my course of action would be and had been sound. (Gal 2:3) But even my companion Titus, Greek though he was, was not obliged to be circumcised. Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us3 P a g e

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. The phrase Ma aseh hatorah works of the Torah appeared first in the Dead Sea Scrolls-indicative of the ultrareligious halaka of the Essenes, and also the halaka of the Pharasees-this is not referencing the Torah of Yeshua- Torah written upon the heart Andrew Roth AENT The term "works of the Law" has shown up as a technical theological term used in a document in the Dead Sea Scrolls called MMT which says: Now we have written to you some of the WORKS OF THE LAW, those which we determined would be beneficial for you... And it will be reckoned to you as righteousness, in that you have done what is right and good before Him... Remember who Peter wrote to: 1Peter 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, Acts 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. 1Peter 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Constraint-anagkastwv anagkastos-compelling 3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. 2634. lords: katakurieuw katakurieuo,-controlling 4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
