THE 19th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SEPTEMBER 25, 2016 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *OPENING HYMN This is the Day the Lord Has Made LSB 903 1. This is the day the Lord has made; He calls the hours His own. Let heav n rejoice, let earth be glad And praise surround the throne. 2. Today He rose and left the dead And Satan s empire fell; Today the saints His triumphs spread And all His wonders tell. 3. Hosanna to the anointed King, To David s holy Son! Help us, O Lord, descend and bring Salvation from Your throne. 4. Blessed is He who comes to us With messages of grace; He, in the Lord s name, comes to us To save our fallen race. 5. Hosanna in the highest strains The church on earth can raise. The highest heav ns, in which He reigns, Shall give Him nobler praise. 10:30 Green Park Choristers and Ringers and Singers We Will Rejoice Ruth Elaine Schram *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. BAPTISM (10:30) L: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty: C: Will say to the Lord, My refuge and my fortress; My God, in whom I trust. L: For He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; C: He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you will find refuge. L: For he will give His angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways, C: On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. L: Most merciful God, gracious Heavenly Father: C: I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed You in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil, and failed to do what is good. But I am truly sorry for my sins and, trusting in my Savior, Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION C: Amen. *THE GLORIA PATRI (Taken from LSB, page 186) C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

*THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS LSB pages 187-189 (8:00) Glory be to God on high, And on earth peace, good will toward men. We praise You, we bless You, we worship You, we glorify You, we give You thanks for Your great glory. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty, O Lord, the only-begotten son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy; who takes away the sin of the world, receive our prayer; who sits at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy. For you only are holy; You only are the Lord; You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit, are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. *THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray. C: Amen. THE OLD TESTAMENT READING for the nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost is from Amos 6:4-7, page 768: (8:00, 10:30) 4 "Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall, 5 who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David invent for themselves instruments of music, 6 who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! 7 Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile, and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away." L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE is from I Timothy 6:6-16, page 993: 6 Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. 11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the sixteenth chapter, verses 19-31, page 876: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 19 "There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham s side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.' 25 But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to

us.' 27 And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father s house 28 for I have five brothers so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' 29 But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' 30 And he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' 31 He said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'" L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. *THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. CHILDREN S SONG (Sung as the children come forward) (8:00 & 10:30) 1. Lord God, we all to You give praise, Thanksgivings meet to You we raise That angel hosts You did create Around Your glorious throne to wait. 2. So watchful is the angel band That follows Christ on every hand To guard His people where they go And break the counsel of the Foe. 3. For this, now and in days to be, Our praise shall rise, O Lord, to Thee, Whom all the angel hosts adore With grateful songs forevermore. Songs of praise the angels sang. Heav n with alleluias rang, When creation was begun, When God spoke and it was done. 2. Songs of praise awoke the morn When the Prince of Peace was born; Songs of praise arose when He Captive led captivity. 3.
