Waltham/Lexington Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Parish Fatima Forever Our Lady of Fatima 100 th Anniversary May 13 Most of us are familiar with the story of Our Lady of Fatima. Mary, the Mother of God, appeared to the three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal on May 13, 1917. May 13 th marks the 100 th anniversary of this supernatural phenomenon. Mary, as Queen of Heaven and Earth, entrusted to those three children an important message for the world. The essence of the message needs to be heeded and is especially relevant for our world today. Fatima is prophecy ~ ~ Fatima is a warning ~ ~ Fatima is a message. Mary appeared six times to these shepherd children from May 13 th 1917 until October 13 th 1917. Prophecy and Warning In 1917 World War One was raging. Our Lady foretold that World War One would soon end, yet another more serious war would follow. World War Two began for much of Europe in 1939. Mary also warned that if people did not return to God, Russian Communism would spread because of the sins of humanity. Our Lady asked that the rosary be prayed as the tool and weapon to combat evil. Mary warned that the Church would be persecuted, the good would be martyred, nations would be destroyed, and the Pope would have much to suffer. Our Lady gave the children a vision of an assassination attempt on the life of a Pope. (An attempt on the life of John Paul II occurred on May 13 th, 1981.) Message Our Lady showed the children a vision of Hell. This was done because many people did not believe that Hell existed. Through prayer and acts of reparation, Our Lady told the children, that many souls can be saved and conversions can take place. To save souls, Mary told the children that God wants to establish a devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in the hearts of each person. This is key since the heart of Mary leads souls to Jesus. The heart of the Fatima message is a message for all humanity. Prayer, repentance, self-sacrifice, and acts of reparation, atone for the sins of mankind. The spiritual conversion of all to follow God s Will is the essence of the Fatima message. Prayers of reparation and the importance of the rosary for world peace are at the core of Our Lady s message. As promised to the three children, Our Lady provided a miracle so that the world would believe. On October 13 th, 1917 (the last apparition of Fatima) over 70,000 people, believers and non-believers witnessed the Miracle of the Sun. The sun spun in the sky showering radiant hues of light upon all those witnessing below. As the sun spun, it zigzagged toward the earth. At the same time, miracles happened and many people present were cured of their afflictions that day. This supernatural event was seen as far away as 35 miles from the site of the apparition. The Miracle of the Sun highlighted Our Lady s message to all humanity. Mary wants her message known. Fatima was never meant only for the people of yesterday, but for all time! Please take into your hearts the plea of reparation and the request of devotion to Mary s Immaculate Heart. Together, may we strive to live the spiritual message of Our Lady of Fatima. Be assured that Mary s Immaculate Heart will triumph. God Bless. ~ ~ Noreen DiPerri Tolosky, (Father DiPerri s sister. This essay appeared in her Longmeadow, MA parish bulletin, and in other bulletins in Western Massachusetts.) May 14, 2017
