Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, Portugal Celebrating the Centennial of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima This centennial that is being celebrated to honor and remember Our Lady of Fatima follows the liturgical year, starting on November 27, 2016 and concluding on November 26, 2017. There are three ways in which the faithful can obtain plenary indulgences throughout the year. The first way is for the faithful to make a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal. The second way applies to the pious faithful who visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration in any church, oratory or proper place during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May to October 2017, and there devoutly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. The third way to obtain a plenary indulgence applies to people who, because of age, illness or other serious cause, are unable to travel. These individuals can pray in front of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and must spiritually unite themselves to the jubilee celebrations on the days of the apparitions, the 13th of each month, between May and October 2017. The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is blessed with two beautiful wood-carved statues of Our Lady of Fatima from Portugal. Thus, the Shrine will offer opportunities for pilgrims to obtain plenary indulgences through the second way mentioned above, by venerating a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. During this centenary year, pilgrims will be able to find one of the statues in the Mother of Good Counsel Votive Candle Chapel (where there is also a stained glass window of Our Lady of Fatima). The other statue will be located in the Shrine Church beginning in the month of May and being present there through the month of October. Veneration of these statues will be available to pilgrims during normal operating hours. However, there are two special opportunities for prayer in which pilgrims are encouraged to participate: May 13, 2017: Feast of Our Lady of Fatima Relevant Radio Marian Day of Reflection and May Crowning October 13, 2017: 100 th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun Candlelight Rosary Procession Please call the Shrine or visit the Shrine s website for more details. 877-799-4059 www.guadalupeshrine.org/events All quotes taken from Catholic News Agency s article Three Ways to Obtain an Indulgence for the 100-year Fatima Anniversary by Maria Ximena Rondon

Pilgrims May Gain Plenary Indulgences Affiliation with the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Founder of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, announced on July 31, 2011, that the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse has been affiliated to the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. With this affiliation comes the opportunity for pilgrims visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe to gain plenary indulgences, under the usual conditions. A plenary indulgence is the entire remission of temporal punishment due to sin, the guilt of which has been forgiven. "With the affiliation comes a most generous grant of indulgences, so that pilgrims to this church of Our Lady of Guadalupe may draw more fully upon the rich treasury of the merits of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and of His Sorrowful Mother and of all the saints who have shared with Him, to an heroic degree, in His Suffering and Dying. In gratitude, let us pray, in a special way today, for the intentions of our Holy Father. Let us also hasten to draw upon his rich gift to us for the sake of the salvation of souls, especially the souls of our brothers and sisters in Purgatory. -- Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke Plenary Indulgences may be gained at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the following days: 1. On August 5, the patronal feast day of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome; 2. On December 12, the patronal feast day of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe; 3. On all solemnities of the Blessed Virgin Mary, namely: January 1 (Mother of God), March 25 (Annunciation), August 15 (Assumption), and December 8 (Immaculate Conception); 4. On any day chosen by a pilgrim once a year; 5. As many times during the year as the faithful are part of an organized pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse for purposes of devotion, reform of life, growth in holiness and greater communion with the Holy Father and all the members of the Church, through the intercession of the Virgin Mother of God and Mother of the Church, each of the participants in the pilgrimage may gain a plenary indulgence. Conditions for gaining the Plenary Indulgence are the following: visit to the Shrine Church, the prayer of the Creed and one Our Father during the visit, together with the usual conditions for gaining a plenary indulgence, namely: sacramental Confession, Holy Communion and a prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father (for example, one Our Father and one Hail Mary), fulfilled within about 20 days (before or after) of the prescribed work (i.e. visit to the Shrine Church), in addition to detachment from all sin, including venial sin. Sacramental Confession and Holy Communion (within Mass) are available at the Shrine daily.
