Page 2 Our Lady of Peace May 14, 2017 Dear Friends, One hundred years ago, on May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared for the first time to three shepherd children on the Cova da Iria, which was a field belonging to the family of Sister Lucia in Fátima, Portugal. About midday, after praying the Rosary, as was their custom, they were amusing themselves building a little wall of stones scattered around the place where the Basilica of Fatima now stands. Suddenly they saw a brilliant light, and thinking it to be lightning, they decided to go home. As they went down the slope they saw a brilliant light, a lady more brilliant than the sun, from whose hands hung a white rosary. The lady told them that it was necessary to pray much, and she invited them to the Cova da Iria during five consecutive months, on the 13 th day at that hour. My dear friends, it is a great privilege to both welcome you and invite you to make this pilgrimage to Fatima with us here at Our Lady of Peace. For many years, we have paid heed to our Lady s powerful request to pray the rosary every day and to offer sacrifices for the conversion of sinners. As we enter into this important centennial celebration of the apparitions of our Heavenly Mother in Fatima, let us listen respond to her invitation that was sent 100 years ago. With this request made by our heavenly mother I invite each one of you to listen to her words and take them as directed to you: Sacrifice yourselves for sinners and say many times: O Jesus it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Through this message, she is also asking us to pray, she is asking us to offer sacrifices and she is asking us to bring people to her Immaculate Heart. As she assures us: My immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God. All of you gathered together with your candles lighted stand as sea of light honoring our Heavenly Mother Mary. The most important light that we can emit, however, is that which was given to us at our Baptism the light of her son Jesus Christ. May this centennial celebration lead you to a deeper commitment to your baptismal vows, may it strengthen you in your devotion to Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and may it lead you and many others to a deeper conversion to God. Please accompany us on this pilgrimage to Fatima each 13 th day of the month from now until October. Pray the Rosary every day, offer sacrifices for the conversion of sinners, and invite your friends and loved ones to participate in this beautiful testimony of faith. May we make the prayer of St. John Paul II, a year after his assassination attempt, our own: O Mother of individuals and peoples, you who know all their sufferings and their hopes, you who have a mother s awareness of all the struggles between good and evil, between light and darkness, which afflict the modern world, accept the cry which we, as though moved by the Holy Spirit, address directly to your Heart. Embrace with the love of Mother and Handmaid, this human world of ours, which we entrust and consecrate to you, for we are full of disquiet for the earthly and eternal destiny of individuals and peoples. May God, through the Blessed Virgin Mary, shower upon you and all of us many blessings during this time of grace. Sincerely in Christ and Our Lady of Fatima, Fr. Brian Dinkel, IVE
100th Anniversary of the Fa ma Appari ons - Special Edi on Page 3 WELCOME TO OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH & SHRINE RICH IN TRADITION Our Lady of Peace Romach Catholic Church and Shrine is a parish rich in local history and tradition; a peaceful place of worship, inspiration, hope and prayer for the faithful. We are the spiritual home for the many families we serve, as well as for the countless visitors who come for a spiritual pilgrimage. Our doors remain open to everyone 24 hours a day, all year long. We welcome you! GROWTH THROUGH DEVOTION TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The growth we witnessed from its beginning can be attributed to the power of the Rosary, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the tremendous gift of having Perpetual Adoration all day/ night long and all year long for which our parish is renowned. Surely none of these would have been possible without the passion of Msgr. John J. Sweeny who served as Pastor from 1969 to 2002. It was he who established the First Friday All Night Vigils on October 3, 1969, Perpetual Adoration on August 15, 1976, and on October 7, 1983, erected the beautiful 32 stainless steel statue a shrine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary built by sculptor Charles C. Parks, and dedicated by Bishop Emeritus Pierre Dumaine of the Diocese of San Jose. The newly proclaimed (at that time) Pope John Paul II, now saint, deigned to bestow a special blessing for that occasion. In 2014, a bronze statue of Pope St. John Paul II was erected by Fr. Gustavo Nieto, Institute of the Incarnate Word (2013-2016). Noteworthy of mention is the fact that the Shrine is the only major Marian Shrine on the West Coast between Our Lady of Sorrows Shrine in Portland, Oregon, (over 700 miles to the north), and the famous Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, (over 2,300 miles to the south). We invite you to visit our serene and peaceful place of worship and experience the tender gaze and maternal solicitude of our Blessed Mother. PERPETUAL ADORATION 24/7 Of all devotions, that of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest after the sacraments, the one dearest to God and the one most helpful to us. (St.Alphonsus of Liguori) As the love for our Lady brings us to love our Blessed Lord and vice versa, our parish gives parishioners and pilgrims the possibility to adore our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament every day, all day long throughout the year. Every hour begins with the recitation of the holy Rosary and is continued by silent prayer. Over 300 parishioners are now committed to one or more hours each week. We attribute to this ministry many blessings that we invite you to share as you register to spend one hour with our Lord. It entered the United States through Canada at Buffalo, New York, on December 8, 1947. (December 8th being our patronal Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception.)
