Luke 12:35 welcome We Gather PRELUDE Jerusalem, My Happy Home (arr. Dale Wood) Ty Woodward, Organist *Processional HYMN #89 United Methodist Hymnal Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee *Call to Worship Todd Erlandson, Lay Lector (Psalm 50) The Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth! Our God comes and does not keep silence, before Him is a devouring fire, and a mighty tempest all around Him. He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that He may judge His people: "Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!...those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honor me; to those who go the right way I will show the salvation of God." Let us worship our Mighty God in thankfulness and joy! *Choral ACT OF PRAISE "O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands; serve the Lord with gladness, and come before Him with a song!" *Sharing the peace of christ Please greet those worshipping near you. As a courtesy to others, please silence all cell phones/sound-making devices. * Asterisks indicate standing if you are able.

CHILDREN S MESSAGe #2233 The Faith We Sing Where Children Belong This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. As the congregation sings, all children are invited to come forward. I Am a Child of God I am a child of God; You are God s child, it s true. Children of God are called to love one another, as Jesus taught to do. As the congregation sings, the children may go to their Sunday School classes. Our Mission & Common Life Rev. Robert English We thank God for these opportunities for fellowship, for worship, and for service. Thanks be to God! We Hear God s Word hymn #2177 TFWS Wounded World that Cries for Healing The gospel Luke 12:32-40 (Pew Bible page 75, N.T.) The Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God! homily "It's Never Too Late!" You may place gifts of cash or checks made out to First UMC in the offering plates as they are passed. You may also place your Let's Connect/Let Us Pray card in the offering plate. Give online at any time at www.santamonicaumc.org or by using the QR code in the insert. Thank you. May God grow in us generous and joyful hearts. THE OFFERTORY The Chancel Choir/Dr. James Smith, Music Director And All the Earth Shall Own Him Lord (arr. Fred Bock) A tribute to the 2016 Summer Olympics And did those feet in ancient time walk upon Israel s mountains green? And did the Christ of heaven come down? Was God in flesh both heard and seen? And did He die to prove His love? And did He rise more pow rful still? And was His rule on earth started there upon Golgotha s tragic hill? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds unfold! Bring me my Chariot of Fire! I will not cease to spread His light: my faith a shield, His Word my sword; til Christ, my God, is crowned as King, and all the earth shall own Him Lord.

*Response #94 UMH The Doxology *unison Prayer of Dedication Rev. English God of Many Blessings, as You have blessed us in so many ways, we offer ourselves to You. Take our gifts, take our service, and take our lives. Help us to put You on the top of our priority lists this day and always. Help us to put You first place in our hearts, so that our most precious treasure will be found in dwelling more completely in You and Your purposes. This we pray in Jesus' name, Amen. The Sacrament of Holy Communion We will use the Musical Setting beginning on page 2257 in The Faith We Sing hymnal. Gluten-free vegan wafers are available from the servers upon request. The Ushers will guide you in coming forward to receive the communion elements. You may pause at the kneeler to pray or be in silent prayer at your seat. #593 UMH Here I Am, Lord #432 UMH Jesu, Jesu #393 UMH Spirit of the Living God We go forth to serve Prayer after Communion Eternal God, we give You thanks for this holy mystery in which You have given yourself to us. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. *hymn #2238 TFWS In the Midst of New Dimensions (plus verse 6): As we face our new beginnings, let us treasure old and new. As we move forever forward, seeking LOVE in all we do. *BenedictION Rev. Worley *Benediction response Postlude Praise to the Lord (arr. You are invited to remain seated until the Postlude concludes, or to exit quietly.

The Head Usher today is Al Mead. See an usher if you need assistance. Rev. Patricia Farris is on vacation today. After today s service, members of the Communion Server Ministry will be taking the communion elements to those who were unable to worship with us. During the summer months the Chancel Choir is singing some of their favorite anthems from the prior year. We hope they are your favorites also. Nursery Care is available at 9 a.m. in Room 204 in the Education Building. Parents with young children are welcome to worship in the sanctuary or in the Kids Zone in the narthex. First UMC takes the care and safety of children seriously. We are a Safe Sanctuary congregation. A changing table is provided in the restroom located in the hallway west of the Fireside Room. Please see an usher for directions. Flowers at the Reredos: With best wishes to the cast and crew of The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee, from Leslie and Anson Nordby. To request prayers, you may fill in a Let's Connect/Let Us Pray card found in the pews, and drop it in the offering plate during worship. If there are Prayer Quilts on the north wall of the sanctuary, you are invited to pray over and tie knots on the quilts. Stop by the Hospitality Table in Simkins Hall in The Shelby Center during Coffee Fellowship today to ask about membership. Visit the Fireside Room after worship to view the photographs by Haylie Wollitz, taken on a recent trip to Nepal. F O C U S O N All Community theater August 7, 2016 Don t miss A.C.T. s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a hilarious musical about six quirky kids competing in the Bee run by three equally quirky grown-ups. The production features talented professionsals, returning C.A.S.T. alumni, and FUMC members Kendra Gorlitsky, Kaitlyn Plukas, Molly Smith, Dane Rold, David Penson, and Joanne Bailey as well as a few lucky audience volunteers. I m so excited to get to be in a show on stage again - I ve been working back stage since I graduated 4 years ago. I m also excited to be the costume designer for the show, which is a great hands-on application of my education and is the field that I d like to work in. Molly Smith, Leaf Coneybear and Costume Designer, C.A.S.T. alumni of 5 years. I love getting back to doing something creative with my church community as part of the adult cast under the direction of Dorothy Nicols. I ve also really enjoyed working with my C.A.S.T. director, Dane Rold, who plays my character s Dad. Kaitlyn Plukas, Logainne Schwarzy SchwartzandGrubenierre, C.A.S.T. alumni of 7 years. It has been a great experience to be involved in a stage production here at FUMC. It also has been wonderful to perform with such a diverse and talented cast. David Penson, Carl Grubenierre, First UMC member and office staff. This is a MUST SEE musical. Hysterical, heartwarming and uplifting, with an absolutely OUTSTANDING cast and crew, some of whom flew in from as far away as London, Germany, and Wichita Kansas just to do this show. You are going to be blown away by the quality of the music, the fully professional voices, the harmonies, the acting and of course the spelling! Dorothy Nichols, Co-director and Choreographer. Tickets ($10 each): www.santamonicaumc.org/act, and at the Sunday Hospitality Table. Show appropriate for middle school kids and up.
