The Parable of the Sower 1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear. ( Matthew 13:1-9) 18 Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and

understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. (Matthew 13:18-23) Response to the Word Is our church willing to pray with the 650 churches of the Al-West Florida Conference and be one of the 25% that fell on good soil and seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world? CAN WE FORM A PRAYER TEAM AND PRAY THROUGH WHAT IT MEANS TO MAKE DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE WORLD? #1 Identify at least 3-5 people along with the pastor for this prayer team. #2 Meet weekly from September 1 until November 30, 2012. (90 days) #3 Pray through the 4 prayer questions each week. Question One: Does our congregation understand what it means to make disciples of Jesus Christ? Can we pray for God to guide us to the honest answer? (see resource book teaching of Matthew 28:16-20; John 15:1-7) Question Two: Are we open to pray along with the other 649 churches of our annual conference about making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world for 90 days. (see resource book about connected in annual conference, no silo s, Holy Catholic Church) Question Three: What are we to pray about in seeking God s leading in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world in our congregation and annual conference? (see resource book discipleship not just membership) Question Four: Is God calling us to begin something new to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world? How is the Spirit directing? (See resource book about being generative and beginning new discipleship teams, worship services, sites, mission teams, communities of faith, and new churches) What response is our Church willing to make after prayer for 90 days regarding the sower casting seed in our Annual Conference?

First Choice - OUR CHURCH IS READY TO STEP UP! Sharpen existing focus on making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world in existing worship, Sunday school classes, small groups, men s and women s ministry, youth, children, and present ministry. Second Choice OUR CHURCH IS READY TO STEP OUT! Step out in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by starting new worship services, new sites, new mission teams, new communities of faith, and new churches. Third Choice - OUR CHURCH IS READY TO GO FOR IT! Is there another way God is leading right now in our local congregation? We ar e ready to go for the vision God is placing before us! Praying Through the Questions Resource Guide 1.) Does our congregation understand what it means to make disciples of Jesus Christ? Can we pray for God to guide us to the honest answer? What is a disciple? How do we make disciples? Webster would describe a disciple as a student or follower. A disciple is commonly known as one of the twelve who followed Jesus their rabbi. A rabbi is considered a teacher and a disciple a follower. In our context today, the question does not become do we have a rabbi or teacher? But who is our rabbi? Is it a popular football coach? Someone we admire? Who do we bow down before and see to learn from as a teacher? A disciple is one who bows down at the feet of Jesus to accept Him as Savior (salvation) and learn as a student seeking to follow in His ways even to live into the teachings of Jesus. How do we know we are disciples? Love and fruitfulness are two confirmations. Fruitfulness and love of God and neighbor confirm we are His disciples. Jesus teaches in John 13:34-35 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. Jesus teaches about fruitfulness in John 15:1-8 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes [a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words

remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. Disciples then are those who know Jesus, follow Jesus, bow at His feet and learn from Him as Rabbi and those who make other disciples. How does one make disciples? We shine our light to influence others to follow Christ and bow down to learn at the feet of the Rabbi. Jesus teaches in Mattew 5:14-16 You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.: The making of disciples is the command of the our Rabbi Jesus Himself in the Great Commission He says in Matthew 28:18-20 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. What is our honest answer to the question does our church make disciples? Are we learning, following, and worshipping at the feet of the Rabbi Jesus? Are we leading others to learn and live into Jesus teachings? 2.) Are we open to pray along with the other 649 churches of our annual conference about how God is leading us to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world for 90 days? Every church in the Alabama-West Florida Conference is part of a greater Church. There are no silo churches. We are all connected. First, we are connected through our annual conference to the other 649 churches. Second, we are connected to the actual Kingdom of God through the universal church. This is what we mean in the Apostles Creed when we say. I believe in the Holy Catholic (or universal) Church We are part of something much greater. Our local church is part of the Body of Christ. We are all connected. We are all on the same team. A team includes many gifted players working together. The Church at it s best is a team of gifted people building up the overall Body of Christ so that disciples can be made through the Church. The Apostle Paul speaks of this team in Ephesians 4:11-16 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become

mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. We are all called to be one team the Alabama-West Florida Conference in the United Methodist Church and even more importantly be connected to the Holy Catholic Church (Universal) the Body of Christ. 3.) What are we to pray about in seeking God s leading in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world in our congregation and annual conference? Every church can bear fruit and make disciples of Jesus Christ! We can pray for how is God calling our church in our community to make disciples? God is not leading us just to make members but disciples. Our membership vows can be disciple vows. #1 Prayers (every disciple learns and lives into praying) #2 Presence (every disciple is present and part of community {Church}) #3 Gifts (every disciple has resources and gifts to share in building up the Body of Christ) #4 Service (Jesus washed feet to demonstrate service is a path to greatness) #5 Witness. (We are challenged to influence others to become disciples) 4.) Is God calling us to begin something new to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world? How is the Spirit directing? After praying through these questions for 90 days, how is God calling us to make disciples as a church? Is God calling us to STEP OUT?
