Thoughts on Worship Today marks the only Sunday of Christmastide this year, so let s continue the festive spirit of the Good News of Christ s birth! As we follow his new parents on their journey to Jerusalem to dedicate Jesus, what might we glean from the blessing (and burden?) of this young child s life?

Prelude Choral Introit Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light Text: Johann Rist (1607-1667) Music: Johann Schop (1590-1664), Harmonized by J. S. Bach (1685-1750) Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, and usher in the morning; O shepherds, shudder not in fright, but hear the angel s warning. This child, now weak in infancy, our confidence and joy shall be, the power of Satan breaking, our peace eternal making. Come, dearest child, into our hearts, and leave your crib behind you! Let this be where the new life starts for all who seek and find you. To you the honor, thanks, and praise, for all your gifts this time of grace; come, conquer and deliver this world, and us, forever. * Call to Worship One: Let us greatly rejoice in the LORD, Many: May our whole being praise our God; One: For God has clothed us with the garments of salvation, Many: And covered us with the robe of righteousness. One: For just as the earth brings forth its flowers, Many: So our God will cause right-living to spring up, All: And justice to flow down as the waters of life. Amen. * Congregational Carol 189 Angels, from the Realms of Glory Regent Square

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary,
"This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed--and a sword will pierce your own soul too." One: May the Spirit of Wisdom lead us to understanding. Many: Thanks be to God. The Offering of Our Gifts The ministries of our church are possible because of the generous gifts you pledge in support. At this time, you are invited to give your offering, as you are able. The Second Reading Luke 2:36-40 There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. One: May the Spirit of Wisdom lead us to understanding. Many: Thanks be to God.
