July 7, 2018-5:00 p.m. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:10 AS WE GATHER God s power, grace, and mercy stands in contrast to our weakness. The psalmist urges us to lift up our eyes to God, especially in times of distress. In the Old Testament Reading, Ezekiel is sent to rebellious Israel to speak the Word of the Lord. Likewise, in the Gospel, Jesus comes to His hometown to teach, but He is rejected. And in the Epistle, we find the theme in its clearest depiction as Paul boasts and rejoices in his weakness, because when he is weak, then he is strong, and God most clearly showcases His power, grace, and mercy. 1

Busy Bags are available in the Narthex for those with little busy hands. Please help yourself. Children bulletins are available from the ushers. Assisted Listening Devices are also available from an Elder or Usher. Grace Space is available up by the pulpit for little children. Please supervise your children when they are using Grace Space. If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion but would like a blessing, simply come forward during the distribution, cross your arms when Pastor approaches you and he will speak a blessing. Holy Communion is offered to those who have been instructed in what the Scriptures teach about Communion. We believe the Bible teaches: 1) Jesus Christ is our only Lord and Savior from all sin, death, and the power of evil; 2) The Risen Christ is really present in the Sacrament and that with the bread and wine we receive His Body and Blood; and 3) We resolve to dedicate our lives to the service of our Lord in His Body, the Church, through worship, sacrificial giving, and thankful living. The center of the individual cup trays contains non-alcoholic wine for those who prefer this substitute. Gluten-free communion wafers are available SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST PREPARATION OPENING HYMN Christ Is Our Cornerstone LSB 912 INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. 2
OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: Lift up your eyes to the Lord! People: For He is filled with mercy. Pastor: Plead with Him for what you need. People: For He is filled with power. Pastor: Be content with His ways. People: For His grace is sufficient. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Beloved in the Lord, each of us has rebelled against God and rejected His will, His ways, and His commands. We were born in sin and weakness. We cannot escape our rebellious condition on our own. Let us then confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father. Silence for reflection. Pastor: Heavenly Father, People: we confess that we have rejected Your ways and sought our own. We have rebelled against Your almighty rule, trying to be the masters of our own lives. We have failed to love You with all our heart. We have failed to love our neighbors as ourselves. We have failed to love our enemies as You commanded. Forgive us by Your power, mercy, and grace. Pastor: In the power, mercy, and grace of almighty God, Jesus Christ died and was raised for you. On account of Christ and His all-sufficient grace, God forgives you. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. His grace is sufficient for us. His power is made perfect in weakness. WORD FIRST READING Ezekiel 2:1 5 (p. 587, ESV) (p. 821, NIV) (Ezekiel is sent to Israel, a nation of rebels, with God s Word.) SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 12:1 10 (p.830, ESV) (p.1149, NIV) (We rejoice in our weaknesses because they showcase the power, mercy, and grace of Christ.) CHILDREN S MESSAGE 3
HOLY GOSPEL Mark 6:1 13 (p. 717, ESV) (p. 995, NIV) (Jesus is rejected in His hometown but sends out the twelve disciples to proclaim repentance, cast out demons, and heal the sick.) HYMN OF THE DAY Here I Am, Lord WOV 752 MESSAGE Only For the Weak Pastor Donald Antor APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH OFFERING (Gifts for the Mission of Immanuel Church and School are received.) 4
SACRAMENT THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Matthew 26:26 28; Mark 14:22 24; Luke 22:19 20; 1 Corinthians 11:23 25 Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. (Luke 11:2-4) DISTRIBUTION HYMNS Create in Me a Clean Heart W&P 35 Here is Bread W&P 58 5
