DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Maundy Thursday April 9, 2009 Seven-thirty in the evening Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God The Last Supper of Jesus, by Hermine Shafer, c. 1964 Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the great Easter celebration. The word maundy is said to be derived from the Latin word mandatum, the first word of the Latin phrase, Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos ( A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you ), the statement used by Jesus in John s gospel to explain the significance of washing the disciples feet. Maundy Thursday is also the night that Jesus instituted the Lord s Supper with the words, Do this in remembrance of me. As a way to remember that night, all the worship articles and adornments are removed from the altar. This symbolizes both the suspension of Holy Communion, which is not celebrated on Good Friday, and the abandonment and humiliation of Jesus Christ.

The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. GATHERING ORGAN PRELUDE Improvisation on Ubi caritas GREETING *PROCESSIONAL HYMN 290 Go to Dark Gethsemane REDHEAD 76 PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) God of grace, you have come to us in our Savior Christ; but we have reviled him, denied him, even betrayed him with a kiss. We have not faithfully followed his commandment to love one another as he has loved us. Through this bread and wine reveal your love, which is constant in the face of our infidelity. Restore us by the power of your Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *THE PEACE (All stand and exchange signs and words of God s peace.) PROCLAMATION PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (in unison) God our Father, your Son Jesus Christ was obedient to the end and drank the cup prepared for him: may we who share his table watch with him through the night of suffering and be faithful. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Exodus 12:1-4, 11-14 (page 56 in the pew Bible) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. NEW TESTAMENT LESSON 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (page 163) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *GRADUAL HYMN 628 Eat This Bread (All turn and face the Gospel Procession.) BERTHIER *GOSPEL LESSON John 13:1-17, 31b-35 (page 101) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

*GRADUAL HYMN 628 Eat This Bread BERTHIER SERMON Undressing and Dressing He rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel. RESPONSE CALL TO PRAYER Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Let us pray. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (The congregation responds to each petition: Hear our prayer. ) OFFERTORY Ubi caritas Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exsultemus et in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Amen. Where charity and love are, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us into one. Let us exult and be glad in him. Let us fear and love the living God. And with a sincere heart let us love one another. Amen. *DOXOLOGY (sung to the tune of When I Survey the Wondrous Cross) Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. THANKSGIVING AND COMMUNION *THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Musical setting C on page 20 in the hymnal. The congregation sings the responses.) *THE LORD S PRAYER (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) SHARING OF THE BREAD AND WINE All those who have become members of Christ s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. The tradition as understood at Duke Chapel is that the Holy Spirit makes Christ fully present in both the bread and the wine. If you receive only the bread, be assured that you are nonetheless in full communion with Christ and the Church.

If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. MUSIC DURING DISTRIBUTION HYMN 627 O the Depth of Love Divine ANTHEM Agnus Dei (from Mass) STOOKEY Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Grant us peace. THE STRIPPING OF THE ALTAR AND DRAPING OF THE CROSS Once the ministers have departed, the people may stay in prayer or depart in silence. *All who are able may stand.
