The Greeting of God GOD SUMMONS US INTO HIS PRESENCE The Call to Worship: Psalm 150:1-2: 1 Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! 2 Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! WE RESPOND TO GOD S SUMMONS *Hymn of Praise: Trinity Hymnal 731, Doxology *Opening Prayer *Hymn of Praise: Trinity Hymnal 21, Sing Praise to the Lord! GOD DECLARES HIS LAW Reading of the Law: Exodus 20:15: 15 You shall not steal. Silent Prayer of Confession Confession of Sin (Unison): WE RESPOND TO GOD S LAW Heavenly Father, you have granted us every spiritual blessing in Christ (Eph 1:3). Yet, we are slow to trust in you. We have stolen from our neighbors by our selfishness, by taking advantage of them, by neglecting our responsibilities to them. How we have grieved you, Father, 2
and sinned against those whom you love! Father, we turn from our thefts and return to you for life and happiness. Grant us no longer to steal but to do good to those around us. Purify our hearts by your Holy Spirit! Through Jesus our Lord, who died for sinners (Rom 5:6) and fulfilled all righteousness (Mt 3:15), forgive our many sins. Amen. GOD DECLARES HIS GOSPEL Reading of the Gospel: 2 Corinthians 5:14-15: 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. Confession of the Gospel (Unison): Adapted from Luther s Small Catechism I believe that Jesus Christ is truly God, born of the Father in eternity and also truly man, born of the Virgin Mary. He is my Lord! He redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, bought and won me from all sins, death and the authority of the Devil. It did not cost Him gold or silver, but His holy, precious blood, His innocent body His death! Because of this, I am His very own, will live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him righteously, innocently and blessedly forever, just as He is risen from death, lives and reigns forever. Assurance of Pardon: Hebrews 9:12-14: 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. 3
WE RESPOND TO THE GOSPEL *Hymn of Thanksgiving: Trinity Hymnal 524, Thy Works, Not Mine, O Christ GOD TEACHES US HIS WORD Reading of the Word of God: Acts 18:1-17 1After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2 And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. And he went to see them, 3 and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade. 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks. 5 When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. 6 And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles. 7 And he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God. His house was next door to the synagogue. 8 Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized. 9 And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, 10 for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people. 11 And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. 12 But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him before the tribunal, 13 saying, This man is persuading people to worship God contrary to the law. 14 But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong doing or vicious crime, O Jews, I would have reason to accept your complaint. 15 But since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of these things. 16And he drove them from the tribunal. 17 And they all seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal. But Gallio paid no attention to any of this. 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 1 Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes, 2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: 4
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Preaching of the Word of God: Paul s evangelism of the Corinthians Daniel Chew *Hymn of Response: Trinity Hymnal 523, My Hope Is in the Lord Prayer of Response The Lord s Prayer (Unison): Matthew 6:19-13 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. The Offering *The Confession of Faith (Unison): The Apostles' Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic + Church; + universal the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *Hymn of Consecration: Trinity Hymnal 658, Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All *Benediction GOD DISMISSES US WITH HIS BLESSINGS 5
