Knollwood at Worship TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY Sunday, February 11, 2018 10:55 am To those who feel the need of light; to those who find doubts and fears in their hearts; to those who need courage for their daily tasks; to those who feel lonely and friendless; to those who wish to give service; to all who, in faith, will support and involve themselves to the limit of their ability in the work of the Kingdom of God which this church undertakes; to all who want rest, peace, and happiness this church invites you to the fellowship of Jesus.

KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP GATHERING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! THE CHIMES Three chimes are sounded, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, centering us in the embrace of the Spirit. As we gather, we present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship. THE OPENING SENTENCE... Josh Godwin One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. THE PRELUDE Love Divine, All Loves Excelling... arr. Edwin T. Childs Lauren Winkelman, organ THE CHORAL INTROIT Open My Eyes... Clara H. Scott The Chapel Choir; Charlotte Brown, Director; David Winkelman, piano [Text may be followed at No. 557 in the hymnal.] THE CALL TO WORSHIP... Josh Godwin One: We come today, brought together to worship. All: Let us behold God s strength and glory. One: The Lord reigns! Let the earth rejoice. All: Let us be glad in God s righteousness and justice. One: We come today to share in remembrance with communion. All: May the love and joy of Jesus be in us, and his spirit fill our longing hearts. ~Bonnie McCarson THE INVOCATION AND THE LORD S PRAYER... Josh Godwin *THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN OF PRAISE, NO. 180 Christ upon the Mountain Peak... MOWSLEY LISTENING FOR GOD S WORD THE FIRST LESSON: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6... Phil Hendrix One: This is the word of God. Deacon of the Week All: Thanks be to God. *THE SECOND LESSON: Mark 9:2-10... Evan Sieges One: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Thanks be to God. * Those who are able will stand. Ushers will seat those waiting. Hearing aids and large print hymns are available from the ushers. 2

THE CHILDREN S CHOIR ANTHEM You Are Welcome Here... Mark Burrows The Chapel Choir Am I welcome here? Am I safe to sing or laugh or shed a tear? Will I be loved the way I am? Will friends be near? Am I welcome here? You are welcome here. You are safe to sing or laugh or shed a tear. We love you just the way you are, so have no fear. You are welcome here. This is a place of peace and grace, where all God s children have a home. God s reign will come, God s will be done when all are loved and no one stands alone. All are welcome here. All are safe to sing or laugh or shed a tear. God loves us just the way we are, so have no fear. All are welcome here. I am welcome here. THE THIRD LESSON: Mark 9:14-29... Chrissy Hardy, Josh Godwin, Ben Wagener One: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Thanks be to God. *THE HYMN OF DEVOTION, as printed on p. 6 Transform Us... PICARDY We invite the children, grades 1 st through 3 rd to remain in worship with their parents. Children s Worship is on the first and third, fifth Sundays of the month. Worship Care for preschool and kindergarten is offered weekly. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE... Lucrecia Norman THE ANTHEM Dazzling as the Sun... Gwyneth Walker The Chancel Choir Dazzling as the sun, the face of Jesus on the mountain, like the face of Moses coming down from Sinai ready, strong to lead his people out of bondage into freedom, to the promised land. Transfigured for disciples eyes, God s servant who would suffer as Isaiah prophesied. Revealed in garments glistening white, the glorious Son of Man whom Daniel had foretold. Then the cloud of presence, then the voice of witness: This is my beloved Son on whom my favor rests. Listen to him. Hear him! Gazing on the Lord by radiant light transfigured, see the pattern of our lives: cross embraced to Easter splendor. Claim the Gospel vision wondrous: we are God s beloved ones. Claim the transformation promised: destiny of glory! ~Delores Dufner, OSB, 2003 THE SERMON... Diane Lipsett MEANWHILE, DOWN IN THE VALLEY THE CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION... Diane Lipsett The Sursum Corda One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts! All: We lift them to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise! 3

The Prayer of Confession Oh God, as we seek to follow the example of Jesus, we confess that often we stumble and fail. Even as we celebrate your presence with us, we feel powerless against the many daily challenges we face. With your grace and mercy, teach us how better to follow your will. Help us to be open for your spirit to move in us. Lead us in your way of righteousness and justice. In the spirit of Jesus we pray, amen. ~Bonnie McCarson The Words of Institution Sharing the Bread and the Cup All wafers are gluten-free. The Bread Lord of All Most Holy... Hal Hopson The Chancel Choir Lord of all, most holy; How shall we give thanks? How, for a broken body? Lord of all, most holy; How shall we give thanks? How, for a crown of thorns? What thanks have we for such a crown? O Lord, what thanks have we? Yet if that body of Jesus be not broken; If He, the Lord, the Most Holy be not mocked; And so we praise You. Alleluia. Alleluia. And if the Lord of all life be not risen; If He not reign as the Lord of heav n and earth; Lord of all, most holy, hear our thankful praise. Hear our supplication. Lord of all, most holy, Thanks for Your life poured out; Thanks for Your broken body. Indeed we too, would serve the world, and praise Your name forever more. The Cup Fairest Lord Jesus... arr. A. D. Miller Lauren Winkelman, organ RESPONDING IN FAITH THE INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP If you desire membership in this congregation, you are invited to come forward and the pastor will greet you. Johann Sebastian Bach Lauren Winkelman, organ TO OUR GUESTS We extend to you a sincere welcome and the hope that you will find your worship experience meaningful. To learn more about Knollwood Baptist Church, find us online at www.knollwood.org. You can also receive our newsletter and email announcements by emailing colleen@knollwood.org, or just call the church office, 725-1343. Sunday School at Knollwood begins at 9:45 a.m. KBC WELCOMING STATEMENT Knollwood Baptist Church is an inviting, inclusive family of faith open to all persons, whatever their race, gender, socioeconomic status, special needs, or sexual orientation, who want to walk in the way of Jesus. ABOUT OUR WORSHIP Appreciation is expressed to Charlotte Brown, Dorothy Wagener, and Rachel Wiggins for sharing their musical gifts this morning. Today s Call to Worship and Prayer of Confession were written by Knollwood member Bonnie McCarson. The acolyte is Shepherd Causby and the crucifer is Xander Tooze. Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! Printed music used by permission of OneLicense.net #A-724940. FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in honor of Ken Wilson, with many thanks for wonderful musical experiences, by Mary Ann Davis. The white rose on the altar is given by Knollwood Baptist Church in memory of Claude Ingram. It is a symbol of the love and esteem in which this community of faith held him. ABOUT OUR BANNERS The way is a familiar biblical theme encompassing such truths as the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:3), Jesus as the way (John 14:6), and the way as a description of Christian discipleship (Acts 9:2). The words on the banner point to the movements of faith: Longing for God that impels us forward in the spiritual journey; Learning the way of the Scriptures and the way of Jesus; Loving as our love for God and our neighbors deepens; and Living as we live out of Christian faith and witness in the world. The colors of the banner emphasize green for ordinary time, the period in the church year between Pentecost and Advent. The artist who designed and painted the banners is our own Bambi Setzer. BENEVOLENCE OFFERING On Communion Sunday, a benevolence offering is taken to help with needs in the Knollwood family and wider community. Ushers will be in the narthex following worship to receive donations. 5
