Service of Worship Palm Sunday April 9, 2017 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Entry into Jerusalem, ca. 1030 1040 Our service begins with a procession of the palms to recall the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, fulfilling an ancient prophecy of the coming Messiah. The palms we wave reflect the fragility of the celebration since a mere five days later, the crowd s adulation turns to hatred. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul declares Christ s humble obedience on the way to the cross, as we are invited to walk with Jesus this Holy Week.

The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. The Chapel welcomes families with children. If at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement. Gathering Carillon Organ Prelude Tiento [XII] de falsas (4 o tono) Juan Cabanilles Pasacalles I (1644 1712) Greeting and Announcements *Processional Hymn 278 (found in the hymnals located in the pew racks) Hosanna, Loud Hosanna ellacombe *Blessing of the Palms *Processional Hymn 280 All Glory, Laud, and Honor (All stanzas; repeat verses and refrain as necessary until the procession is complete.) st. theodulph *Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance (in unison) Eternal God: In Jesus Christ you entered Jerusalem to die for our sins. We confess that we have not hailed you as King, or gone before you in the world with praise. For brief faith that fades in trouble, for enthusiasms that fizzle out, for hopes we parade but do not pursue, have mercy on us. Forgive us, God, and give us such trust in your power that, in every city, we may live for your justice and tell of your loving-kindness; for the sake of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) True and humble King Jesus, hailed by the crowd as Messiah: as we hear your word proclaimed today, grant us the faith that we may be found beside you on the way of the cross. Amen. Psalm Psalm 118:19 29 (pages 839 40 in the hymnal) Gloria Leader: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, People: and to the Holy Spirit. Leader: As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, People: world without end. Amen.

People: Thanks be to God. *Gradual Hymn 159 (Stanzas 3 4) Lift High the Cross Sermon Who is This? Response crucifer crucifer *The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Call to Prayer Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Let us pray. The minister begins the prayers with a time of silence. Prayers of the People (The congregation responds to each petition: Hear our prayer. ) Mission of the Month
