THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD INTRODUCTION Unfaithfulness is one of the pervasive sins of man. In the world, a man s word is no longer his bond. Marital infidelity abounds. Unfaithfulness to one s children, family members and friends is commonplace. Some, who once were committed to preach God s truth, have no scruples about attacking and denying that very truth. Everyone is guilty of this sin. We have all been unfaithful as believers. We have been disloyal to Jesus Christ in some way or another. We have been unfaithful to the Word of God. A man who is faithful is a rare jewel. The Word of God says, Most men will proclaim each his own goodness, but who can find a faithful man? (Proverbs 20:6). How comforting it is for us to be able to lift our eyes above the world s scene of betrayal, deceit and ruin to behold GOD, who is faithful, faithful, faithful in all things at all times. If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself (II Timothy 2:13). THEME SCRIPTURE Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant1 and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments (Deuteronomy 7:9). 1 covenant: a formal solemn and binding agreement; treaty; a pact between God and man where God is the initiator and man the recipient; divine ordinance with signs or pledges.

SECTION I Definitions 1. WRITE your own definition of faithful. Dictionary Definition The word faithful means trustworthy, reliable, firm. It comes from a root meaning to support, as a parent supports a child. The essential and preeminent meaning of the word faithfulness, whether applied to God or man, but especially applied to God, is reliability. Man may desire to be faithful; however he lacks the ability to carry out his desire. God has infinite power to do all He has promised. The definition of faithfulness, as applied to God, is the perfect reliability of God, which insures the certain accomplishment of all that He has promised. Biblical Definitions The Hebrew word for faithfulness as it refers to God is emuwnah which means firmness, security, it includes the concept of truth. It also means stability, steadiness, steadfastness, preparedness, readiness, and trustworthiness. The Greek word for faithfulness means steady, loyal and established. Scripture Descriptions 2. READ and MEDITATE on the following Scriptures. UNDERLINE the words and/or phrases that describe God s faithfulness. Psalm 89:2 For I have said, Mercy shall be built up forever; Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens. Psalm 119:90a Your faithfulness endures to all generations... Isaiah 25:1b Lamentations 3:22, 23 I Corinthians 1:9 I Thessalonians 5:24 Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth. Through the Lord s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it. 2

What did God promise He would do? 3

3. How did the LORD prove Himself faithful to Elijah by the Brook of Cherith (vv. 5, 6)? 4. When the brook was dried up, what was God s next command (vv. 7-9)? 5. Elijah again obeyed the LORD. What provision could the widow offer Elijah when he asked her for food and water (vv. 10-12)? 6. What did Elijah ask the widow to do, although she was destitute (v. 13)? PERSONAL Has God ever asked you to do something by faith that did not make any sense? Relate. 7. What did God promise He would do for her (v. 14)? 8. 9. What happened to the widow s son (vv. 17, 18)? In her grief, what was her accusation to the man of God? 10. How did Elijah react to her accusation? What did he do (vv. 19-21)? 11. WRITE the blessings the widow received for obeying the Word of the LORD through Elijah. 5

PERSONAL How has the LORD in His faithfulness restored someone to you, whom you considered emotionally, spiritually, or physically dead? God s Faithfulness to Paul in the Storm READ Acts 27:9-44. In Acts 27, we find Paul on a ship, bound as a prisoner, on his way to Rome. Paul had been falsely accused by the Jewish High Priest and leaders (Acts 25). Since Paul was a Roman citizen he made an appeal that his case be tried before Caesar, the Emperor of Rome. The voyage to Rome was a slow and dangerous one due to the bad weather conditions. 1. The winds had become contrary. What was Paul s warning concerning the journey (vv. 9, 10)? 2. Who persuaded the centurion 2 to go against Paul s advise? Why (vv. 11, 12)? 3. DESCRIBE the conditions of the voyage (vv. 13-20). 4. How did Paul exhort the men (vv. 21, 22)? 2 centurion: Roman captain of one hundred men. 6

5. Who stood by Paul on this tempestuous night (v. 23)? 3 How did Paul describe his relationship to God s messenger? 6. How did the divine messenger encourage Paul (v. 24)? In verses 25-38, we see Paul taking authority and encouraging the men with great confidence. It is evident that Paul knew his God would be faithful. 7. How did God further prove His faithfulness to Paul (vv. 39-44)? SECTION III Scriptural References of God s Faithfulness God s faithfulness is manifested in many ways.
