Mullins Messenger Mullins United Methodist Church 4 North Mendenhall Road Memphis, Tenn. 38117-2698 901.685.8253 www.mullinsumc.org January 2018 Thoughts for 2018 Well, 2017 is over, and a new year has just begun. Time certainly moves on with or without us. In his book, Here and Now, Henri Nouwen has this to say about a new year: A new beginnning! We must learn to live each day, each hour, yes, each minute as a new beginning, as a unique opportunity to make everything new. Imagine that we could live each moment as a moment pregnant with new life. Imagine that we could live each day as a day full of promises. Imagine that we could walk through the new year always listening to a voice saying to us, I have a gift for you and can t wait for you to see it! Imagine! This is the day the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it! ---Psalm 118:24 God does, in fact, give us gifts. As this new year moves forward, I invite us to look for those gifts as we strive to draw closer to him and one another, especially as we remember the greatest gift... that of God, himself, incarnate as Emmanuel. May his eternal presence fill us with the strength, courage, and openness to partner with what God is doing in our congregation. Peace, Scott Metro Laity Meeting Jan. 29 A Metro District Laity Meeting--- A Conversation with Bishop Bill McAlilly ---is scheduled for 6 to 8 pm Monday, January 29, at Bartlett United Methodist Church. All laity are invited to attend. The primary topics for discussion are (1) the progress on our conference s shared mission and vision, (2) an update on the Commission on a Way Forward, and (3) a proposal to merge the Memphis and Tennessee Conferences. 1

School Supply Drive for White Station Elementary Thank You, Mullins! Dear Mullins Congregation, It means a lot to all of us at Manna House that you remembered us by asking for donations of socks and underwear to attend your Christmas Dinner! Thank you. This time of year is especially hard for Manna House guests, and your donations and thoughtfulness go a long way. May you be blessed with the hope and peace of Christ in the New Year! ---Manna House Guests and Friends UMW Invitation for Jan. 9th The Mullins United Methodist Women invite all women of the church to our first general meeting of 2018 at 10:30 am Tuesday, Jan. 9 th in the Fisher Wing parlor. Our popular guest speaker, Rev. Dennis Neenan with Wesley Senior Services, will enlighten and entertain us as always. We are a great group of women who d like to know you better and for you to learn what the UMW does besides the yearly Crafts Fair. Following the meeting, we ll gather for lunch ($4) in the fellowship hall. If you are a visitor, you are our guest. ---Margaret Brown As students return Jan. 2 for second semester, teachers at our Adopt-A-School partner, White Station Elementary, are in need of classroom supplies. Helping with supplies will show we are the hands and feet of Jesus by caring for our church and embracing our diverse community. Supply List items, in order of greatest need, are: Boxed tissue, #2 pencils, Clorox wipes, colored copy paper, white and colored card stock, paper towels. You may leave your donation in the box provided outside the church office, or make a check payable to Mullins UMC (and note for WSES supplies) and shopping will be done for you! Donations will be taken to the school January 11 th. Thanking you in advance for your generosity. ---Margaret Brown Mullins Liaison to WSES Highland Heights Outreach Monday, January 29, is our next opportunity to serve lunch to the homeless in our community at Highland Heights UMC. If you want to help cook, be there at 9:30 a.m. Servers should arrive by 11:45. The cost to provide this meal is approximately $200. Donations to help with the cost are greatly appreciated. Thanks to all who participate in this meaningful fifth Monday ministry. ---Melissa Johnson 2
