TIME BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS God prepares the world to receive her King

TIME BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS Approximately 400 years between the writings of Malachi and the coming of the Messiah, which opens the New Testament. Sometimes these years are referred to as the silent years since God did not send any prophets to speak in these years (at least none whose messages He wished to have recorded). However, these years were anything but silent. World empires were changing and world conditions were changing.

TIME BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS Elohim brought His Son, Yeshua HaMashiach (Jesus the Messiah), into the world at precisely the moment He intended from before the beginning of time. But for those 400 years, He directed history in such a way as to prepare the way for His Son s coming. When the New Testament opens, the world scene is vastly different from that at the close of the Old Testament.

TIME BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS When Malachi closes the Tanakh (Old Testament) period of history, Israel had gone into exile due to their disobedience, and returned from Babylonian captivity (lasted 70 years, as God ordained). They returned to a city of rubble, and struggled to rebuild their Temple, city walls, and their homes. After much delay and oppression, they finally built a much smaller, less grand Temple (under Ezra and Zerubbabel s leadership), and eventually the city walls (under Nehemiah s leadership). They rebuilt their homes gradually and settled back into the land and the city of Jerusalem.

TIME BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS However, no longer under own rule. After Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem (606 BC), and took people captive to Babylon, Israel was no longer a sovereign nation, but ruled by and part of the Babylonian Empire, then the Persian Empire, then the Greek Empire, and eventually the Roman Empire at the time of Yeshua s first coming. Gentile kings allowed Israel to continue religious practices (usually true with conquering forces). If they lived peacefully and didn t rebel they were usually allowed to live their normal, typical lives, but without self-governorship.

BABYLONIAN DOMINATION 606-536 BCE PRE AND POST EXILE: 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles, Prophets: Jeremiah (and Lamentations), Ezekiel, Daniel Judah conquered by Babylon Jerusalem and First Temple destroyed (586 BCE) Most Jews exiled to Babylon (for 70 years) Little to no Jewish presence in the land

PERSIAN DOMINATION 536-333 BCE POST EXILE: Ezra-Esther, Prophets: Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi Some (remnant) Jews return from Babylon Temple, city walls rebuilt Jews under Persian rule People continue to fall away from God Old Testament time line ends

GREEK DOMINATION 332-166 BCE POST EXILE: Land conquered by Alexander the Great; Persian Empire ends, Greek Empire begins Hellenistic influence on world (Greek common language, academics, philosophers, etc.) Alexander dies, empire divided among 4 generals Jews ruled by Syrian Seleucid rulers, including Antiochus Epiphanes ( abomination of desolation ) Tanakh translated into Greek (common language), called the Septuagint, (275 BCE)

HASONEAN SELF RULE 166-63 BCE Maccabean (Hasmonean) revolt against Antiochus (desecrated Temple, Jews could not practice faith) Jews retake Jerusalem, cleanse Temple (164 BC) (Hanukkah, Feast of Dedication) Syrians granted self-rule to Israel (Judea then) Collapse of Seleucid kingdom allowed Jewish independence, for a time Jews flourished under Hasmonean dynasty

ROMAN DOMINATION 63 BCE Jerusalem captured by Roman general, Pompey (63 BCE) Rome places vassal king on throne in Israel, Herod (not Jewish, an Idumean) Temple restored and refurbished as Herod s pet project for his posterity Priesthood appointed, not hereditary (Aaronic) (throne, priesthood not occupied by Jews)

TIME BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS After Temple was rebuilt in Jerusalem, the God-directed Aaronic priesthood, and all the associated rites, rituals and sacrifices was re-instituted. Priests were of the tribe of Levi, from the family of Aaron, as God directed. At this time we don t hear much about political and religious factions that split the people of Jesus time. Second Temple (aka Ezra s Temple ) rebuilt after the exile and captivity during Persian dominion.

TIME BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS Under Greek (Syrian) rule after Alexander s death, Antiochus Epiphanes deposed last hereditary priest, Onias, began selling position to highest bidder. This practice continued, even after Jesus came. High Priest was usually not even Jewish. Total mockery. Herod undertook a massive restoration and renovation of the second Temple in order to carve his name in history. It was still under construction when Yeshua taught there.

TIME BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS This is now the world Elohim determined would be the time of the Messiah s birth. A time when even the priesthood was corrupt, and the strength and brutality of Rome ruled the world. It was now when over 300 promises regarding the coming Anointed One would be fulfilled precisely in the life, death and resurrection of His Son, a human being offered as a sacrifice for all human beings, but One who is also fully God Himself.

TIME BETWEEN THE TESTAMENTS Though we cannot comprehend it, The One who inhabits eternity was the One who died a horrible death on an execution stake, but was raised back to life as the First fruits of all who would believe. He did this for YOU, and for me. WHY? His unfathomable love and desire to be with us.
