When Christ Enters In A Compassion To Show [So far in 1 John we have discovered that there is:] [A Conversion To Choose To be a Christian one must be born again, saved.] [A Communion To Cherish Sweet Fellowship with God and Christians] [A Cleansing to Receive The Amazing Forgiveness of God. The cleansing blood of Christ.] [A Commandment To Keep The Honor of Obeying Our Lord!] [A Compassion To Develop His Unconditional and Incomprehensible Love in us.] [A Character to Develop To develop and live out the Character of our Lord Jesus Christ in our world. This is to master this Christian life.] [A Compassion To Show We will live out the Love of Christ in our daily lives.] [A Confidence To Hold The Holy Spirit in us gives us Confidence in Christ.] [A Confusion To Face Our Spiritual Adversaries. We are in a Spiritual Battle, choose a side, get into this fight.] [This is the third time that the Apostle John, through inspiration, returns to the subject of Love. We noticed the Fact of Love as a mark of our Christian character (1 John 2.7-8), then we noticed the Characteristics of Christian love (1 John 3.11-19), now we return again to the subject of Christian love here in our text. The fact that love is reiterated three times, as an evidence of the new birth, should lead us to understand the undeniable importance of love in our Christian lives. The incredibly high value of love as a characteristic of our new found life in Christ is highlighted by the words of our Lord when He said,] 3 Jn 1.3 [John 13:34-35 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.] [Love is Important - As Christians we must never forget the importance of love in our hearts, homes, and hospitality. We must always exhibit love in the way we live among other people. In our society some have adopted the idea that love is Page 1 of 9

the only thing that matters for Christians and the Church. While love is incredibly important, love is not the only thing that matters. Those who hold this position will have the tendency to disregard some Bible truths for the sake of compassion. Hence, in our day we find many who are tolerating and even protecting clearly defined sin because they have missed the stabilizing element to unfettered love and kindness, the truth.] [Truth (doctrine) is equally important. The truth, found only in God s Word and in our living Lord Jesus Christ, gives us our foundation and stability. The apostle John wrote in another epistle,] [3 John 1:3-4 3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.] [However, truth void of love can become stone cold and cruel. Therefore, love brings acceptability to truth. Christians should love with the passionate, unending, sacrificial love of God, but they should stabilize their love with the absolute foundation of God s truth. Hence, Christians need to be always reminded that,] [Love without truth is Chaos, Truth without Love is Cruel.] [Now, back to our subject at hand which is love. Love ought to be the undeniable manifestation of every born again Christian.] In our text we discover, (vs 7-11; 1 John 3.34-35) [ Love is an undeniable manifestation in the lives of born again Christians. This love is not just any love, and it certainly is not the same love that is found in our secular world. Many misunderstand the love demonstrated by God, God s people, and the Church because they mistakenly think the love of God is like the love found in our world.] [There is no comparison between God s love and worldly love,] [The world s love seeks to give you whatever you want, God s love seeks to give you that which you need. [The worlds love is often selfish, God s love is always sacrificial. [The worlds love is usually lustful, God love is always pure.] Page 2 of 9

[When someone finds and accepts the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior they almost immediately sense that there is something remarkably unexpected and different in the love they sense from their new found Heavenly Father. However, they will likely be hard pressed to explain or define the love they are experiencing for the first time. As time passes, and as they spiritually mature in Christ and the Word of God, they will begin to discover the uniqueness of the love they are learning through Christ. They will grow in the love of God.] [Born again Christians will discover three things about God s love as expressed by the Apostle John in our text.] When Christ Enter s In A Compassion To Show (vs 7-8; John 1.12-13; vs 14-15) [- 7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. From these verses we realize the importance of love in our lives. Christians without love are no Christians at all. The text reveals that God is love, and if God is in you, then God s love is in you. A truly born again Christian will not be able to deny a sense of compassion and kindness that pours out of the core of who they are. Love is an undeniable evidence of the presence of God.] [Notice that our text undeniably links love to the New Birth. The text reads... and every one that loveth is born of God,... (vs 7) people are born into the family of God when they receive the Lord Jesus Christ, ] [John 1:12-13 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. ] [We receive the Lord Jesus Christ when we acknowledge that Jesus is who He said He was, the Son of God,] [1 John 4:15-16 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love (vs 7, 16); and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.] Page 3 of 9

Matt 5.43 [Therefore, when you hear the Word of God, and realize that Jesus is the Son of God, who sacrificially died for your sins, and rose to give you life, then you become a child of God through the new birth and God comes to dwell inside of you. With God s presence there comes the love of God. The significant sanction of the love of God within you is the true evidence that you are born again. You are a child of the living God. You are Saved, Safe, and Secure in the kingdom and family of our Lord.] (vs 9; Rom 5.8; John 3.16; Rom 10.13; Matt 5.43-48) [- 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. The uniqueness and greatness of God s love is expressed through this verse. God does not love us in the typical worldly way. The world When Christ Enter s In A Compassion To Show loves hoping for some kind of return or benefit. God s love is a sacrificial love. God s love gives with no prospect of any equitable return. God sent His Son to pay the penalty we owed for our sins while there was no prospect for any kind of benefit for God or His Son,] [Romans 5:8 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.] [We notice also that God sent His love gift into the world before He knew whether you would respond to His love or not. Our passage reads... that we might live through him. (vs 9) Hence, God s sacrifice reaches out to mankind with an incredible love gift, bought and paid for. The investment has been made, the engagement is still uncertain. God holds out the precious gift and says, whosoever will,] [John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. ] [Romans 10:13 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. ] [The sacrifice is significant; God gave His only Begotten Son. Now God awaits your response, will you accept the precious love gift God offers?] Page 4 of 9

[From this verse we learn something more about God s love and its manifestation within us. God s love is a sacrificial love and the manifestation of His love within us will be the manifestation of sacrifice, and that will be sacrifice in the face of spite and hateful persecution. The Bible states, When Christ Enter s In A Compassion To Show [Matthew 5:43-48 43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.] [Hence, the love of God that will be manifested in the lives of born again Christians will be significantly sacrificial, because the characteristic that marks God s love is sacrifice in the face of spite.] 3. The Significant Selflessness of Love (vs 10) [- 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. Another characteristic of God s love is its selflessness. God sent Jesus to be the propitiation for our sins. This means that Jesus took a penalty that He did not owe and suffered to meet the requirement of that penalty. Jesus died for your sins and my sins, so that we would not have to pay the penalty for our sins ourselves. This is exactly what God s love ought to drive God s people to do for those whom Jesus loves.] [Someone might say, Preacher, I m not going to suffer for the things that someone else has done, I don t even want to suffer for what I have done. But don t you understand that this is exactly what Jesus has already done for you. Jesus suffered for your bad choices. If Jesus was willing to bear your sins for you, then you should be willing to bear the weight of someone else s burdens.] Page 5 of 9

B. The Personification of Love (vs 12-17) [- 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit [Notice the presence here]. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, When Christ Enters In A Compassion To Show Part 3 3. The Significant Selflessness of Love and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.[notice the Presence again] 17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. As we study this passage it becomes almost impossible to miss the presence in God s love. God is in you, He is love, you love with His love because his love is living and stirring within you. Notice in these verses,] 1. The Tabernacle of Love (vs 12-16; John 1.18) [ Love dwells in us because God is love. The word dwell appears numerous times in this text. It speaks of the Christian dwelling in God and God dwelling in the Christian. Whenever I hear the word dwell, or some form of that word, I think of the Tabernacle. The word Tabernacle means dwelling place. Hence, we are the dwelling place of God or if we dwell with God then we are God s Tabernacle.] [Notice verse 12, No man hath seen God at any time... No one has ever seen the triune Godhead in its fullness. Many men have seen the Lord Jesus Christ who is the manifestation of God,] [John 1:18 18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.] [But in our day, as in the day when John wrote this text, most men had never seen the Lord Jesus Christ, and hence no man has seen God. The vast majority of people, actually almost all people who would read this text of scripture will not have seen God at all. Hence, God will manifest Himself through the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ and He will be recognized through the love that God places in them. Hence, John wrote,] Page 6 of 9

[ 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.] [The Church of our Lord Jesus Christ can only manifest the reality and presence of God through the expression of God s love. A lack of love in the Church will demonstrate a lack of God in the Church. That means that the Church needs to be filled with compassionate Christians for the Church is composed of its members.] [Love and truth are the expression of God s presence within God s people and God s Church.] 2. The Testimony of Love (vs 17) [- 17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. It will be the love of God manifested through us that will give us boldness or confidence when we stand before our Lord at the Judgment Seat of Christ. It is the love of God manifested in us that will secure our rewards at the Judgment seat of Christ.] When Christ Enters In A Compassion To Show Part 3 3. The Significant Selflesness of Love B. The Personification of Love 1. The Tabernacle of Love [Because of God s Love in you, You will,] [Win the lost and earn the Soul Winners Crown (1 Thess 2.19-20) because you love the lost and they will respond to the love of God manifest through you.] [Walk the Christian walk and earn the Incorruptible Crown Mastering the Christian Life (1 Cor 9.25-27). Because you love God dearly and want to please Him in everyway and the world will see and respond to your unique love and discipline.] [Work to disciple New Christians and earn the Crown of Glory (1 Pet 5.2-4) because the love of God in you will not allow you to ignore the struggles of those who have just accept Christ and your concern and compassion toward them will make all the difference in their spiritual growth.] Page 7 of 9

[Hence, the love of God manifesting itself through you will be your testimony and confidence in eternity to come. This is the evident token of the presence of God moving within you and working itself out of you.] C. The Consolation (Tranquility) of Love (vs 18-21) [- 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because he first loved us. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. There is an undeniable peace that accompanies the love of God. There are two things that contribute to a Christian s consolation through love.] When Christ Enters In A Compassion To Show Part 3 3. The Significant Selflesness of Love B. The Personification of Love 1. The Tabernacle of Love 2. The Testimony of Love 1. The Strength of Love (vs 18-19) [- 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because he first loved us. The word fear here speaks of something that strikes terror inside of someone or the source of fear. What strikes fear into people? The sense that one day they will stand in judgment for their choices and actions.] [Notice the word Torment in this passage, it clearly express the idea of the terror caused due to an expect punishment that will be rendered. Hence, there are many who know that they deserve the punishment of God, and in this context they must know that this punishment carries the eternal condemnation of hell with it. Therefore they are filled with fear and torment.] [People can try to repress their sense of coming judgment but they can do nothing to suppress the deep fear it demands from them. The sense of impending doom might be repressed and hidden from those around them but it remains none-the-less a dominant feature in their minds.] [The Apostle John reveals a dynamic truth regarding this sense of diabolical fear within a person. John wrote,... He that feareth is not made perfect in love. All those who have this abiding sense of fear and dread within them have not been fulfilled, completed, or made perfect in love. In other words Page 8 of 9

they need the abiding presence of God that brings with it the unspeakable love of God. They need the Lord Jesus Christ in their heart and life.] [But don t get the wrong idea that a Christian cannot live in this kind of fear. Christian if you are living the life of a prodigal you too, while saved, can be vexed and tormented with this fear, because you are refusing to allow this living love and presence of God to guide you in your life.] [The Word of God states,] [2 Peter 2:7-8 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)] [Child of God if you are not allowing the presence of God in you to lead you to live out the TRUTH and LOVE of God in this world then you will have fear and torment. What must you do? Surrender anew to the Lord Jesus Christ.] [God s love in supernaturally strong and will cast out the fear and torment that vexes the lost and rebellious.] 2. The Standard of Love (vs 20-21) [- 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. There is no ambiguousness surrounding the love of God. Christians, those who have received the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God, must love those around them. Hate harbored in a Christian s heart is an evident token that God is not present within them. If you have God, then you must love with godly love.] CrossRoads Baptist Church, Sunday, June 28, 2015 When Christ Enters In A Compassion To Show Part 3 3. The Significant Selflesness of Love B.
