PROPOSAL 1.0 INTRODUCTION M alaysia is a country with a rich cultural heritage that includes exquisite woven textiles like Songket cloth. Songket is woven by weavers in Northeast Malaysia, mainly Kelantan and Terengganu. The term of the Songket comes from the Malay expression menyongket meaning to dig under and insert gold threads in the process of weaving which were made especially for the royalty. The background colour in Songket usually in earth tones of dark red, maroon, purple or green. However the yellow colour was only reserved for the royalty. The motifs and patterns are mainly inspired by nature as a gesture to appreciate the creator. In the weaving process the metallic threads are inserted in between the silk or cotton weft (latitudinal) threads in a technique called supplementary weft weaving technique. According to Kelantan tradition, these weaving techniques came from the north, somewhere in the Cambodia-Siam region and expanded south into Pattani, and finally reach the Malay court of Kelantan and Terengganu as early as the 16th century. The weaving of Songket continues as a small cottage industry on the outskirts of Kota Bharu and Terengganu. In 2012, Songket was inaugurated into national heritage and was exhibited in Tenunan Songket ASEAN in 2016 where it is aim to combine all Songket in Southest Asia to uphold the value of arts and culture to international level. Due to Songket specialty and uniqueness, the Management & Science University have taken an initiative to appreciate and support the Songket legacy for globally recognition by organizing Malaysia Songket Run 2018. It is important to uphold the Songket as a part of awareness to the society especially the youth now days to understand this is our invaluable legacy. On top of that, it is to appreciate the Songket in terms of clothing, handicraft, and its diversity of culture of weaving the Songket. The will be held at Chancellor Hall, Management and Science University in the city of Shah Alam. It is open to all contestants to promote the Songket cloth in their own beautiful and creative way in presenting their exhibition. Raising the awareness of Malaysia heritage together can boost the spirit of one nation to uphold this invaluable legacy for global eyes. Furthermore, an will held along the program together with our collaboration international universities from Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia and India to present their Songket design for society as an awareness where Songket cloth can unify a one multicultural nation with a neighboring countries. Besides, this competition will inspire the young generation and boost their enthusiasm in appreciating our country s heritage. This is because a concerted effort to preserve our heritage is a vital link to our cultural, educational, aesthetic, inspirational and economic legacies, all of the things that quite literally make us who we are. This event also could promote the value of Malaysia s art and craft through all activities provided as a unique way that would attract people s attention and interest. We have many competitions that related with Songket which are Choral Speaking, Tengkolok & Sampin Folds, Soccer Songket, Best Post Photo, Songket Design and Fashion Show that will be run during the event. We hope that we will be able to reach the objectives of this event and that this event will bring various benefits to the citizens of the nation. Together with INTERNATIONAL SONGKET RUN 2018 in the theme of Songket Appreciation we will be incorporating the element of Arts & Cultural and wellness activities in this single event. We hope of this event is to encourage people especially among youth, to appreciate Malaysia craft, arts, cultural and at the same time to foster the youngsters to mind their health physically and their psychological mental.
