LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLE Dane, Sarah and Dominic Rold, Claudia and Phil Flanders Congregation joins in the prayer after lighting: O God, rejoicing, we remember the promise of your Son. As this candle is lit, may the blessing of Christ come upon us, brightening our way and guiding us by his truth. May Christ our Savior bring light into the darkness of our world, and to us, as we wait for his coming. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. #217 UMH Away in a Manger (verse 3) Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay close by me forever, and love me, I pray; bless all the dear children in thy tender care, and fit us for heaven to live with thee there. OPEN INVITATIONS MISSION OPPORTUNITIES Walk the Labyrinth Houston Mission Work Team This church community has felt called to respond in many ways after the devastation in Houston from Hurricane Harvey. Beginning with prayer that then led into the prayerful actions of collecting items for hygiene kits, and even raising money for UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief. We have responded over and over to the call for help and will continue to do so this Spring. A work team will be sent to Houston in April to put our faith into action! If you are interested or would like to learn more, email Team Leader, Tricia Guerrero: t.guerrero@santamonicaumc.org or call the church office. For more mission opportunities, go to: www.santamonicaumc.org/outreach-missions. The Labyrinth laid in the Simkins Hall floor of First UMC Santa Monica is a replica of the Chartres Labyrinth laid in the cathedral around 1220 CE. Walking the Labyrinth is an ancient spiritual practice, a way to quiet our minds and open our spirits to the presence of the Holy. Every step a prayer. The First UMC Labyrinth is open one Sunday a month, and also available for individuals, groups and retreats by appointment. Call the church office to schedule: (310) 393-8258.
