The Order of Worship December 19, 2010 10:10 AM To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory, to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whoever will come - this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome Prelude *Call to Worship Rev. David Rea Minister: Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth; sing praises to the Lord! All: Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the skies! Minister: You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. All: Praise be to God! Psalm 68:32-35 *Hymns O Come, All Ye Faithful ADESTE FIDELES O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come, and behold him, born the King of angels; Chorus: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above; Glory to God, glory in the highest; Chorus Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to thee be all glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing; Chorus Once in Royal David s City IRBY Once in royal David s city stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was the mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall: With the poor, and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy. And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love; For that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heav n above, And he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, We shall see him, but in heaven, set at God s right hand on high; When like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around.
*Prayer of Invocation and Adoration Rev. Ronnie Rowe Confession of Faith from Isaiah 9 Minister: Christian, who was it that was born of the Virgin Mary? All: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Minister: What is your hope regarding the ministry of this child? All: Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this Song of Praise God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen GOD REST YE MERRY God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay, Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day; To save us all from Satan s power when we were gone astray. Refrain: O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy; O tidings of comfort and joy. From God our heavenly Father a blessèd angel came; And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same; How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by name. Refrain Fear not, then, said the angel, Let nothing you afright, This day is born a Savior of a pure Virgin bright, To free all those who trust in Him from Satan s power and might. Refrain Public Confession of Sin Minister: Let us confess our sins before our righteous and holy God. All: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Your holy laws. We are prone to wander, and we confess our sins. Restore us according to Your promises declared to us in Christ Jesus our Lord. Private Confession of Sin Assurance of Pardon Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Sacrament of Baptism Everleigh Beth Herrell -2-
Intercessory and Offertory Prayer Ruling Elder, Mr. Wes Boyd Anthem: Rise up Shepherds and Follow PPC Adult Choir *Scripture Reading Luke 1:39-56 39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." 46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever." 56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home. Sermon The Seed of Abraham, The Seed of Mary Rev. David Rea *Hymn of Response Gentle Mary Laid Her Child TEMPUS ADEST FLORIDUM Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger; There he lay, the Undefiled, to the world a stranger. Such a babe in such a place, can he be the Savior? Ask the saved of all the race who have found his favor. Angels sang about his birth, wise men sought and found him; Heaven s star shone brightly forth, glory all around him. Shepherds saw the wondrous sight, heard the angels singing; All the plains were lit that night, all the hills were ringing. Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger; He is still the Undefiled, but no more a stranger. Son of God of humble birth, beautiful the story; Praise his name in all the earth, hail the King of glory! Words of Institution Rev. Ronnie Rowe -3-
The Lord s Table All those who trust in Christ alone for their salvation, are baptized, and belong to a Bible believing church are invited to partake of the Lord s Supper together, feeding on the grace of God by faith. If you have not put your trust in Christ, please allow the elements to pass you by and take this opportunity to meditate on the meaning of the Gospel. A word to parents: Baptized children are invited to the table after they have made a profession of faith and been received as communing members by the Session of the church to which their parents belong. Please hold the bread, and we will partake together. Please drink the cup as you receive it. During the bread Infant Holy, Infant Lowly LEZY Infant holy, infant lowly, for his bed a cattle stall; oxen lowing, little knowing, Christ the babe is Lord of all. Swift are winging angels singing, noels ringing, tidings bringing: Christ the babe is Lord of all. Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true. Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing, greet the morrow: Christ the babe was born for you. Prayer of Thanksgiving During the cup Instrumental *Closing Hymn Angels From the Realms of Glory REGENT SQUARE Angels from the realms of glory, wing your flight o er all the earth; Ye who sang creation s story now proclaim Messiah s birth. Chorus: Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King. Shepherds, in the field abiding, watching o er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing; yonder shines the infant light: Chorus Though an Infant now we view Him, He shall fill His Father s throne, Gather all the nations to Him; every knee shall then bow down: Chorus - 4-
