Greetings Friends of Christ Church, We are two-thirds through 2017, and school and football has begun. I thought I should share with you all the work that the Vestry has been doing since the Annual Meeting in January when we made a commitment to you to develop an action plan to help us tackle a difficult budget and form a ministry vision. Since then, the Vestry has been doing just that, along with the usual vestry business. A Congregational Workshop was planned and held on March 19. Approximately 20 people attended to share ideas and provided answers to 5 questions to help prioritize and lead us forward in our ministry. The information collected at the workshop was collated and analyzed. The vestry then met with Bishop John Tarrant and the Diocesan Minister of Leadership Development, Chris Corbin, in April to get their advice, direction, and resources. Using all the information collected from them and the workshop, the vestry has developed an outline laying out a plan for us to move forward. In the next few months we will complete a preliminary draft plan to share with you at the 2018 Annual Meeting. You can expect to receive a short survey from the vestry that will be asking the congregation a few questions to get a better idea of who we are as a church, what our niche is in the community, and what is our Church Vision. This plan will also help us understand what we will be looking for in a new rector. The Vestry is beginning to develop a Search Committee that will be conducting the work required to find candidates for the new rector of Christ Church. You will be hearing more about that in the near future. The vestry is also currently looking for 2-3 people interested in working on a Stewardship Committee this next month to get the congregation charged up and thinking about how they may help in meeting our vision and goals. Please let me know if you are interested in participating in this committee. Thank you to all those who came to the workshop with your ideas and thank you all for your help in the coming months in meeting our challenges and goals. Peace be with you, Carol Smith Senior Warden Christ Episcopal Church

THE CHRIST CHURCH CONNECTION The Newspaper of the Mother Church of the Dakotas Congratulations Lt. Gov. Matt Michels Congratulations Cade Newland On Friday, July 28, 2016 Lt. Gov. Matt Michels was selected by his peers to serve as chair of the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA). The election took place at the lieutenant governors annual meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. Matt will serve as NLGA chair for a year. It is an honor to have the opportunity to serve NLGA in this capacity, he said. Being a part of this organization has been a valuable experience and as I continue in this position of leadership, I look forward to sharing South Dakota s point of view with NLGA and learning about other state s initiatives. The Department of Corrections at the Mike Durfee State Prison has selected Senior Correctional Officer Cade Newland as the Employee for the Month of August. Senior Correctional Officer Newland works at the Yankton Community Work Center. Officer Newland was selected because he goes above and beyond to ensure the safety of staff and inmates. He is dedicated to the security of the institution. Officer Newland is efficient and effective. He does his job extremely well and comes to work every day with a positive attitude. Officer Newland is an exceptional employee that is deserving of the recognition.

The KIDS HOPE USA model was designed to help churches how to give hope to at-risk public elementary schoolchildren through a relationship with a caring church member. KIDS HOPE USA Way, relies on the interplay of four integral parts: relationship with a caring adult; --One child: an at-risk public elementary school child who needs a --One hour: sixty critical minutes each week when a trained mentor befriends a child and helps him or her acquire basic academic skills; --One church: a committed congregation who owns the program with its neighborhood school and provides a trained mentor and a behind-the-scenes prayer partner for each child; and --One school: a school that welcomes this proven intervention to increase the academic skills of at-risk children, at no cost to the school. Data for students who met with a KIDS HOPE USA mentor for just one year showed: 65% improved in educational success.79% improved in socio/emotional competency.56% improved in attitude toward risky behavior. Your are needed by a child at Lincoln School to provide support for an hour a week. Please consider becoming part of this Christ Episcopal Church outreach.
