Something to remember. That priests and pastors are just like you in so many ways. It s true believe it. We get sick and schedule doctor appointments just like you. We have personal responsibilities just like you. We have families and friends just like you. Unfortunately we attend funerals of friends and family just like you. We have to shop for clothing just like you. We schedule car repairs and oil changes just like you. Many of us take care of ailing and elderly parents just like many of you. I ve recently been told by a distraught person, that a priest shouldn t take a day off every week especially if there is a need for a communion call or nursing home visit in the parish. I have to admit that I was somewhat troubled by such a statement. As the pastor of a busy and active parish, I make every effort to be available as much as possible but there comes a point when I also must attend to my personal health and well being. If I did not, I would be of no good to anyone including myself or the parish. I have been blessed in many ways with various talents as a priest but unfortunately the gift of predicting the future or bi-locating are not among them. Only the Lord knows what the future holds. That being said, I try to schedule all of my personal appointments with doctors, car repairs, ect. On my DAY OFF. In addition, as a primary caretaker, I also try to schedule my elderly mother s appointments on my DAY OFF so as not to interfere with parish life. As you know from experience, it is not easy to reschedule appointments and it can often times take several weeks to find another opening. I know that every Thursday I can make and keep appointments because it is my DAY OFF. I provide coverage for mass and any funerals by a capable and respected brother priest in my absence. I am sorry for the times that I cannot be available but I too am only human and I m sure you all understand. Remember also, The Parish Share program helps to pay for the Hospital Chaplain Program. This program provides chaplains to administer the sacraments in hospitals throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh. That means when you or a family member are admitted to a hospital such as in the Oakland or Shadyside area of Pittsburgh or UPMC Mercy in Uptown, catholic priests are available to administer the sacraments. Often times it is simply not possible for a priest or pastor to travel to every hospital in the diocese. You may not realize it but we do have parishioners being transported to and admitted to hospitals all over the Pittsburgh region. It was much easier when almost everyone went to the hospital in the local community but that is no longer the case. Please remember also that hospitals no longer call the parish to notify us when a person has been admitted. You or a family member must ask the nurse s station for the hospital chaplain to be called and then call to let us know in the parish so we can pray for you and your family. If you or a family-member are admitted to a hospital that is a distance away from the parish and I am made aware of it, I always call and notify the priest chaplain and request a visit on my behalf. I try my best to visit when I am able but sometimes it simply is not possible. If you know that you will be going to the hospital for a surgery or illness and would like to be anointed, let me or Fr. Levi know ahead of time and we will be more than happy to provide the Sacrament of the Sick anointing before you get there. The same is true for most nursing homes. We cover two in our area, Norbert Care Home and Oakleaf. Because of the way things are changing, it is sometime just not possible to get to a nursing home that is a distance away from the parish. We have elderly parishioners in nursing homes all over the South Western Pennsylvania area, as families move their parents to be closer to them. It just is not possible for me and Fr. Levi to travel all over, especially at the very last minute, to administer the sacraments. There are catholic priests from the local parishes who cover those facilities but a family member must ask the nurse s station to contact them. If you contact me or Fr. Levi at the parish, we try our best to notify the priests covering the facility to request the sacraments for you as well. Again, because of the added responsibilities on clergy, waiting until the very last minute may make it impossible for them to get there in time. If you know ahead of time that a loved one is in the process of passing on, notify the nurse s station to contact the chaplain as soon as possible. What happens when a priest cannot be found or make it in time? A family member can remind the person to make some act of contrition and express the desire to receive God s mercy. Sometimes, if a person dies suddenly and a priest did not visit and we are not sure if they made an act of contrition, we have to trust that God, in his loving mercy, provides all necessary graces because he loves us and wants to save us. The Lord does not reject any who call on him. Experiencing God s Grace in our brokenness, reminds us that Hid love never fails. Fr. Steve

Dear Parish Family, As a continuation of last week s article, I want to address again the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Darkness that are currently at war. Perhaps one of the most discouraging things is when we see the Kingdom of Darkness at work within the Church of God. First, we must remember that Satan has been fighting against God for a long time, and he loves to attack God s people. Satan will do anything he can do divide and conquer the people of God! Second, we remember that it is through personal sin that the Kingdom of Darkness spreads, grows, and takes root in the hearts of men. When we sin, we not just breaking some random rules. Some people say, I know that my sin is wrong but I am only hurting myself. That is a lie! We must remember that God is a community of persons and we are made in his image. Humanity is literally engineered to live together in perfect harmony. That is what heaven will be! Every sin that we commit, however personal or private it seems to be, effects everyone around us. For example, when we lie, we break trust within the community. If we are going to combat the Kingdom of Darkness and allow the power of God to take root in our lives then we must start by claiming the sacrifice of Jesus for ourselves personally. Then we must forgive those who have sinned against us (including ourselves), renounce any evil spirits that we have aloud into our lives, renounce every lie of the enemy, and finally receive our identity as beloved sons and daughters of our heavenly Father! If combating the Kingdom of Darkness and claiming your identity in Christ is something that you would like to do but just are not sure how to practically do it, them buy the book Unbound by Neal Lozano on amazon and begin to see how freedom is not only possible, but it is at the center of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Be blessed! In Christ Fr. Levi If you would like to volunteer for the Summer Festival please email Adam Hoffman at ahoffman1995@gmail.com. Thanks There also are Volunteer Slips in the Parish Office. It s a great way to get to know our parish family and experience how ALIVE we really are!

By Deacon Tim Secular Sabotage is a 2009 book my Bill Donohue. Mr Donohue is president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which is an organization that works to ensure both the religious freedom and free speech of Catholics in America. Donohue is a frequent guest on most cable news and religious programs. In this book, Bill Donohue takes a look at some modern examples of anti-catholicism in America. One example is where a college student was threatened with expulsion because she prayed on campus. Another example is a civil rights organization that protested a statue of Jesus - that is found on the ocean floor. These are only a few of the situations that are addressed in this book that show a culture that is crumbling in America. Donohue received his Ph.D. in Sociology from New York University and even taught at nearby La Roche College. Always known for his direct, take no prisoners approach to Anti- Catholicism, Donohue names of the various groups and organizations that are attaching our Christian traditions. In addition to giving this book Five Beards out of Five Beards, I also highly recommend visiting the Catholic League.org website and signing up for their email updates. These email updates explain, on a daily basis, current examples of Anti-Catholic actions in the media, business and public arenas. These emails also usually include the email addresses of top ranking executives and these companies and followers are encouraged to write to them to voice their displeasure. The Catholic League has been very successful in getting businesses to stop paying for commercials on tv programs that are anti -Catholic. This is another example of we are called to be the Church Militant- one of the three States of the Church. Pre Cana Classes Marriage is a commitment between a man and a woman to love and support each other in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health until death separates them. They are to value their relationship above their individual wishes and needs. It s not just a matter of finding someone you re attracted to and marching up to the altar. It takes work, patience, love and, most importantly, God. His presence in a marriage gives the couple the strength to honor their commitment and to raise their children to know and love Him. The Diocese requires that all couples who are planning to marry attend marriage preparation classes. Way back when my husband and I were engaged, I remember trudging to the Diocesan Building in downtown Pittsburgh once a week for these classes. Now, for the convenience of the couples, there are additional options, one of which is a parish-sponsored class that is held over one weekend. The program is held twice a year at Holy Apostles Parish in the Faith Formation Building. Registration and discussions begin on Friday evening and class continues on Saturday. The next session is scheduled for September 14 15. Each couple receives a workbook, A Decision to Love. Included are opportunities for the couple to answer questionnaires and reflect upon various facets of their relationship, helping them to get to know each other better. Some of these include communication, their pasts, personalities, extended families, finances, friends, work, intimacy, children, and spirituality. The book also contains a section on the Marriage Liturgy with detailed worksheets for planning the ceremony, including prayers, blessings, and sample readings that can be used. Special circumstances are also covered in the classes, such as interfaith marriage, previous marriages, blended families with children, spouse abuse, substance abuse, infertility, and more. Eight married couples from the parish give generously of their time to help lead the discussions and share their experiences. Deacon Jim Grab told me that there are usually 12 to 15 couples at the class, although one class had as many as 32 couples. We are blessed to have Deacon Grab and Deacon Mike Babcock as coordinators of this program. If you are newly engaged, this should be one of your first calls. Contact either of them at the parish office 412-884-7744, Ext. 206. Saturday July 14, 2018 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM We are pleased to welcome Father Tom Galvin back as presider and inspirational speaker. We also welcome Patricia McCullough a judge of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania, as witness speaker. Judge McCullough was previously Executive Director of Catholic Charities here in Pittsburgh. Jesus offers so much and He is always there for us with open arms. We only need to turn to Him and ask for his guidance and love. Father Galvin and Judge McCullough will share their thoughts, experiences and insight on Receiving God s Gifts. Our Festival of Praise is a beautiful opportunity for us to offer praise to Jesus and receive His love as His beloved children. Visit the Festival of Praise page on the parish website where you will find links to many of the songs that are in our Praise Band repertoire. Website: www.holyapostlesparish.org Email: praise@holyapostlesparish.org Questions: Call: 412-884-7744 PRE-CANA MARRIAGE PREPARATION The Diocesan mandated pre-cana marriage preparation course will be offered this fall, at Holy Apostles Parish, in the Faith Formation Building, on September 14 and 15 (Friday and Saturday). Registration is required with a fee of $60.00 to cover books and other expenses. Please contact the Church office at 412-884-7744 X 206 to register. The Faith Formation Building is the former Bishop McDowell School building, located on the St. Albert the Great Church campus. This is located in Baldwin, at 3198 Schieck St, just off Glass Run Rd. More detailed information can be found at the holyapostlesparish.org website. In today s Gospel, Jesus is unable to perform many miracles in his hometown because of the lack of faith of the people there. They fail to trust in him as the Son of God because they cannot see past him as the son of Mary and the carpenter. Instead of seeing with the eyes of faith they let the limits of their human sight get the better of them. Do we often fail to see with the eyes of faith? Are there times where we limit God s work in our lives and in the world because we are unable to trust in the power of his love? To see with the eyes of faith allows us to recognize God s work in the world, in the Church and in others for us, and in us for others. There are no limits to what God is capable of doing through our lives, for nothing is impossible with God. On Mission for The Church Alive! is an opportunity for us to grow in trust of the amazing things that God can do in and through us for the good of the Church and of our communities. Don t limit the great work of God. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. This past week I was doing something in the chapel at St. Albert the Great. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Statue was standing there on the floor. It had just been restored, as it had suffered a few dings over time. If you have not seen this statue it is life size and I think quite eye-catching. As I went over the statue checking out the repaired finger, scrapes on his face, and a couple other items with my untrained eye, I found myself looking at this image of Jesus eye-toeye, nose-to-nose. My face was maybe a foot from his, as I looked into his eyes. I had to take a step back! This brought out for me what a sacramental, such as this statue, is truly meant for. It gave my physical, limited mind, a sensation of what it must have been like for the apostles as they stood in His physical presence and listened to His words. That is what a Sacramental is for. It is to remind us, to inspire us, and to help open our earth-bound minds to the spiritual realm. For me, my thoughts moved to a time when we will be physically present, face-to-face, with our Savior. Will I still have questions for Him? Will I even be able to speak? Or will I just relax and bask in his radiant presence? It really doesn t matter, as long as I am there with Him.
