Christ s Washing of the Feet. Peter could not understand why Christ would perform so menial a task. Christ wanted to teach men the great lesson of humble service. That lesson is still valid and is still needed today. We often measure our greatness, our success, by the amount of service and indifference we receive from others. Christ taught the exact opposite: True greatness of soul comes in serving others. Compassion is at the heart of the Christian faith and in the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus First Degree is about Charity. We are called to have the wholeness to be open to the suffering of others and to respond. This Lent, let us take time to share our gifts for the sake of helping others. Food for Thought: When did I last come to the assistance of someone less fortunate than myself? The Assembly has received the Confirmation schedule from the Columbus Diocese for the year 2004. The Pilot will publish in our monthly newsletter the parishes that will be having their confirmation that month. Your participation in this matter would be greatly appreciated. The Biennial District Assembly meeting will be held in St. Joseph Cathedral undercroft at 1:30 pm Sunday, May 2, 2004. The dress code will be tuxedo with social baldric, along with your travel card for admittance. Any Fourth Degree member in good standing can attend, but four (4) members from Assembly 809 will be entitled to vote at this meeting. The official delegates for the Biennial District Assembly will consist of the Faithful Navigator and three (3) members to be voted on at the March business meeting. The Shamrock Club of Columbus has invited the Father Huber Assembly 809 Honor Guard to participate in the Saint Patrick s Day Parade on March 17, 2004. Another great event for our members to participate in, if you can. Last year we had a fantastic turn out! Fraternally yours, Frank Polczynski

Captain s Report: Brother Sir Knights, I would personally like to thank everyone that helped with the last meeting. For the next business meeting we will continue the St. Patty's Day party so bring your St. Patrick's Day themed item. This meeting is for the prospective candidates, so invite them to attend. They will be introduced to the workings of the Assembly. The Navigators Ball is June 11th, 2004 at the Confluence Park Restaurant. We are going to have a 15 piece orchestra playing all the swing music and oldies you can stand. Cost looks to be in the $40 a couple range. Details will be forthcoming. Top of Month has been scheduled for Spageddies at the corner of Noe Bixby and Main Street on March 2nd at 7 pm. Please email (84svo@ameritech.net) me if you plan on attending so I can finalize the arrangements with the restaurant. I am throwing my hat into the ring for the position of Navigator. Since Joe Rossi asked me to be Scribe after joining in 2001, I have been working through the chairs to learn what the Assembly needs. I am positive that I can help the Assembly continue to grow. Pilot Al Cassady will have information in the assembly news letter for Confirmations from March 13, 2004, on. Bishop Griffin has said he would appreciate if members of all three assemblies (809, 2380 & 2727) would participate at these events, if at all possible. Frank gave a report as to the status of purchasing a Papal flag for St. Joseph s Cathedral. He read a letter from SK Mike Berry pursuant to a conversation Mike had with the Cathedral staff. After reading the letter and discussing it s contents with the assembly, Frank felt the assembly should hold off making a decision until Father Mike Gribble, Rector of St. Joseph s, can be consulted with, and more investigation can be made. A copy of the letter has been placed into the Assembly 809 minutes book. The Cincinnati Exempt, March 27, 2004 at the Crowne Plaza Dayton Hotel for those interested in going. Frank has received a couple of letters from Master Richard Wysong concerning the bi-annual District Assembly Meeting. The meeting will be held at the Columbus St. Joseph s Cathedral on Sunday., 5 May, 2004. The meeting is open to any SK who wishes to attend. The dress is tux with social baldric (official dress). The business covered includes resolutions that any assembly may submit in type written form for consideration by the district wide group. After review by a resolution committee, they will be put up for approval by a majority vote of the delegates. The main item of business will be the nomination invoked for the office of District Master, for a two year period commencing 1 September 2004. The nomination speeches are limited to a 5 minute duration. A copy of the nomination speech is to be given to the F. Navigator for the records. The nominee must be present at the District Assembly meeting to publicly verify his acceptance of the nomination. The delegation from an assembly consists of the F. Navigator plus one delegate per every 100 members and/or major fraction there of. Assembly 809 will be represented by three SK s as well as the F. Navigator. Frank needs to submit names for a living and deceased honoree for the Exemplification Class Honorees. The names need to be submitted in writing to Frank. During this meeting, Frank nominated SK Dave Core as an Honoree. So far the names submitted as honorees are: Living- Frank Iannaggi and Dave Core. Deceased- Karl Carius. Frank declined the nomination because he thought it was inappropriate because he will be hosting. Frank needs a list of names of the SK s who have passed away since the last Exemplification. For the next meeting (March), anyone that wishes to run for an Assembly office for the next term should submit a brief description of what they ve done so the assembly can vote on nominations in April. May is when the new officers will be voted in. The F. Navigator made a motion, that if the minutes are correct as written, to dispense with the reading of the minutes. The motion was seconded and passed. Reading of the bills: Dave Core (news letter) $152.10 A motion was made to refer the bills to the Trustees for their approval. The motion was seconded an approved. She also gave Greg her new mailing address which he put on the Widows Roster. He also notified F. Comptroller, Larry James. Greg gave the second reading for the following applicants: Emmett W. Saylor/ Frank Iannaggi c. 11188; Fletcher C. Hasting/ Al Cassady c. 11207; William C. Saling/ Jerry Lowery c. 5253; Jerry Lowery II/ Jerry Lowery c. 5253 Greg gave the first reading for the following applicants: Juan Esparza/ Jerry Lowery c. 5253; Peter M. George/ Jerry Lowery c. 5253; Thomas J. Huth/ Frank Iannaggi c. 3864; Pierre Marte L. Robitaille/ Al Cassady c. 11207 Greg notified the assembly that we now have 23 applications.. Comptroller s Report: The assembly has less than $1700.00 outstanding in dues. Larry is ecstatic. Larry received one check for $10.00 for Pennies For Heaven due to the ad placed in the Knight-ly News that was suggested by SK Frank Iannaggi. The assembly currently has 296 members. Larry has sent in the Fraternal Survey to Supreme but has not received acknowledgment of receipt as of this meeting date. Continued on page 6

Continued from page 5 Purser s Report: Mark reminded the assembly, and said he would be very appreciative of any that participated, as an Honor Guard for the Bishop for the Confirmation at Christ the King Catholic Church on March 1, 2004. He feels it would be a great kick off for the parish membership drive. Mark reviewed the assets and expenditures. Mark has processed the paperwork and cancelled checks for the RSVP program, relating to the two seminarians we sponsored. Scribe s Report: Chalices will be engraved for the three SK s that passed away recently. Joseph A. Gallant, Philip J. Montalvo and Tom K. Shafer Captain s Report: TOTM dinner in March will be at Spageddies ( 614-863-9940) on Tuesday, 2 March 2004 at at 7:00pm Faithful Navigator s Ball: Friday, 11 June 2004, at Confluence Park. Start at 6:30, dinner at 7:30, music (15 piece orchestra) starts at 8:00. Price $40.00 per couple. Jesse will notify the other assemblies. Jesse is still taking donations ( cash, booze, soft drinks, appetizers etc.) for the Exemplification hospitality room. Historian s Report: Larry is working on an Assembly 809 roster book for publication. The book will include names of SK s, deceased, past and present, and their wives. The F. Navigator and F. Scribe reminded Larry they each need a copy of the current Assembly 809 roster that recently came from Supreme. Commander s Report: 1 March 2004, Pat says he won t be in town for the Confirmation at Christ the King Catholic Church. He said someone will have to assume the role of the Commander for that event. Color Guard, 6 March 2004, at the Josephinum, Assembly 809 will be presenting the colors at the Regional Free-throw. Honor Guard, 20 March 2004, at Bishop Ready High School, Pat will need (8) SK s for the Honor Guard, to take care of the participants from our area, in the State Free-throw. Be there at 11:00am. Pat said SK Frank Iannaggi, the District Deputy for Holy Family Catholic Church in Columbus, did the installation of the officers for new Council 13428. There were (9) SK s that escorted the new Knights and their Ladies. Pat said it was one of the nicest installations he had ever seen. BK s Pat Cleary, Frank Iannaggi and Lloyd Stauffer will be going to Holy Family Monday night to talk to 3 to 5 Third Degree Knights that will be going into the Fourth Degree. Special Committees: Golf Outing: F.N. Frank Polczynski has asked, again, for assembly members to try to bring in new members for the golf outing. F.Cdr. Pat Cleary stressed going to your councils to get participants for the golf outing. He reminded us that we can always use money for door prizes. He also reminded us that this is an easy Assembly money-maker. Assembly Shirts: F.Cdr. Pat Cleary says green shirts are difficult to get. Green shirts also symbolize certain offices within the Knights. He suggests going to navy blue. A new motion to change will be brought up under new business. Unfinished Business: Ad in the Columbus Dispatch for the Support of the Clergy: SK Larry James told the assembly the cost for a full page ad ($12253.00) and a half page ad ($5000.00). The assembly agreed that was waaay too much. A suggestion was made from the floor to try the Catholic Times and maybe the local newspapers. The subject has been tabled until further investigations can be made. The Papal Flag: F.N. Frank Polczynski has said that subject is still tabled until further investigation. Trustees Report: Nothing to report New Business: Honor Guard: F.P. AL Cassady has requested an honor guard of from 6 to 8 SK s, that are not going to the Exemplification, for a mass for deceased Sister Arsenia ( nee Agnes Eicholz), who taught at the old St. Mary High School in Columbus from 1946 to 1957. Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in German Village on Sunday, 18 April, 2004. Assemble at 11:00am for the 11:30 mass. There is an article in the Dec. 28, 2003 issue of the Catholic Times (pg 14) about Sister Arsenia. Movie, The Passion of the Christ : SK Greg Kostelac said his parish has set up a private screening for the movie and he didn t know if other parishes were doing the same. As a money making event for the Assembly, he would be willing to investigate the possibility of having a private showing at the Easton theater complex on Saturday afternoon of the Exemplification. Because during the hours from 10:30am to 3:30pm most of what is going on is the registration. Many SK s spoke up, from the floor, and said their parishes have or were already setting up private showings at various theaters. F.N. Frank Polczynski suggested that all of the SK s that know of private screenings already in the works, give that information to SK Dave Core to put into the assembly news letter so people can pick and choose where they want to go. Exemplification Hospitality Suite: SK Frank Iannaggi said he has room 758 reserved for Assembly 809. Assembly Shirts: F.Cdr. Pat Cleary made a motion to change the color of the assembly shirts to navy blue. The motion was seconded and approved. Pat also stressed, that when ordering a shirt, do not call him. Please use the order form in the news letter or the Assembly web site. It was also pointed out, from the floor, that no one is allowed to wear a Knights of Columbus shirt with the Knights identification patch/ logo but a validated Knight. It was also brought up that the wearing of the pre-existing color shirts by the Assembly is still optional SK AL Cassady stated that after the meeting he was selling St. Patrick s Parade badges for $1.00. Continued on page 7

Continued from page 6 Patron s Report: Opportunity. Bill gave a talk on the opportunity of the Knights to make money for their local parishes by selling Tootsie Roles. He told the Assembly how he, by chance, had gotten started, initiated the event at his parish and of the profits that can be made. Bill also said the fund raiser was done in conjunction with the Measure Up campaign. Good of the Order: Prayers are asked for: Dn. Richard Arnett, Jim Bailey, John Beckman, Donna Beres, Pat Booth, Lou Burke Christy Campbell, Irene Cassady, Bill Chapman, Fr.
