CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX NOVEMBER 18, 2012 THIRTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME As Election Day fades into the past how do we become involved in efforts to build a human society which respects the dignity and promotes the welfare of all? Obviously as Catholic believers we must continue to call attention to the moral and religious dimensions of social issues. We must point out the demands of our Christian Faith for a just transformation of society. We must keep gospel values alive and well in a world that needs them desperately. In the midst of the vast problems which face our nation and our world we Catholics are often strangely silent or complacent, almost overwhelmed by the tide of secularism. And yet we Catholics are called to be the salt of the earth, keeping a decaying society from further corruption. Christians are to be the light of the world, illuminating the darkness caused by sin and giving guidance to a nation or world that seems to have lost its way. Why are we not salt and light as we are called to be and as we should be? How many of us take a stand on the side of gospel values when issues arise in public education, housing, homelessness, sexuality and health care? How many can be counted on to speak out in defense of human life at all its stages in a nation that tolerates abortion on demand, well over a million times a year, or teaches people how to take ones own life? Our faith doesn t invite us to become involved. It demands that we speak up. We have let secular society and some in public office give us Catholics a form of inferiority complex. We too often feel or speak and act as if the biblical understanding of human beings and of nations and society were in some way inferior, or as if it were somehow unfair for us as Catholics to advance our religious views and values in the public arena. We need to get over this understanding and stand once again with the Lord of All in all these matters. If we are going to effect a change in our society which it desperately needs and bring the values of Jesus to bear on the problems of our day, then we had better get down to work. Speak up and be counted for Christ!! The future of our nation and of our world depends on your response as a follower of Jesus! THANK YOU We would like to thank all our parishioners who so generously contributed to the Hurricane Relief Fund for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. With your generosity we collected $2,000. God bless you and once again thank you. HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF BECOMING A PRIEST Jesus invites many to come follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. If you think that Jesus may be calling you, please contact Fr. Salvo at the office of Vocations at 914-968- 1340, or check NYPriest@archny.org. A SPECIAL THANK YOU A very special thanks goes out to all our wonderful parishioners who so generously increased their weekly Sunday contributions. Please note that this weekly increase is so needed for St. Theresa s normal expenses and improvements. Your generous response has enabled us to better meet our weekly expenses. We do not want to cut back our service to the community because of lack of financial support. So please continue to help. If you have not as yet increased your weekly Sunday contributions, please pray about it. We really can use your help. Our Bible Study Group meets every Wednesday evening at 7:15PM in the school cafeteria. All are most welcome. Someone may hear and accept the invitation from you and return home to worship the Lord with us. So please invite a friend, relative, or neighbor to come with you to Church next Sunday. God will do the rest. Let us share our treasure of faith with others. Today let us offer a special prayer of thanksgiving and ask God s Blessings for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, whose service and sacrifice will, we further pray, make the world a better and safer place.
