USER AWARENESS PROGRAM ON ACCESS TO E- RESOURCES UNDER UGC-INFONET CONSORTIUM: A Report BY Dr Khaiser Nikam Chairperson/organizer DOS in Library and information science University of Mysore Manasagangothri Mysore 570006 Khaiser.nikam@gmail.com The Inauguration: The program on Access to e-resources under UGC-Info net Consortium, at the University of Mysore, Mysore was organized on 21-22 October 2008 by the Department of Library and Information Science, Manasagangotri, Mysore-06..The program began on Tuesday the 21 st at 11.00 AM at the Central Institute of Indian Languages conference hall, CIIL, Manasagnagothri Mysore-06. Ms.Amulya a ETV-Singer of the Canara Bank Yadetumbi Haduvenu fame, invoked the blessings of the Lord Ganesha by singing the Ganesha stuthi, Prof.PVenkataramaiah, former Vice Chancellor of Kuvempu University, Shankarghatta, B.R. Project, Shimoga, District inaugurated the program by lighting the traditional lamp.prof.t.c. Shivshankarmurthy, Vice Chancellor (Acting), University of Mysore, Mysore, presided over the inaugural function. Dr. Subba Rao introduced JCCC@UGC-Infonet on behalf of Sri. N.V. Satyanarayana, C & MD, Informatics (India) Ltd. Mr.PremChand, Scientist- D, Inflibnet Center, spoke about the significance of the awareness program, which is being promoted by inflibnet. Chairman & Organizing Secretary welcomed the gathering and spoke about the need for such awareness programs on e- resources. Ms.Amulya Rendering the Invocation Prof.P.Venkararamaiah, in his inaugural address appreciated the efforts of Inflibnet Center, Ahmedabad, in making the faculty members, research scholars, and students of the University of Mysore aware of several e journals and e databases of different publishers on a single platform. He said that the libraries are the heart of a university, therefore libraries play an important role in providing seamless access to more than 9000+ e journals instantly. He lauded the efforts of both the department of library science and the Inflibnet Center in taking the initiative to familiarize the library users to such exciting e- resources, which run into millions. Prof.PVenkataramaiah, Former Vice Chancellor, Kuvempu University, Shimoga delivering the inaugural address Prof.T.C. Shivshankar Murthy, Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore, emphasized on providing the access to e-resources to each and every library user. He was amazed to see the overwhelming response of the user delegates, which crossed 350+, for this program. He expressed deep appreciation to the Department of Library and Information Science and the Inflibnet Center in organizing such a program for the first time at the University of Mysore. He promised to increase the bandwidth of the Internet connectivity on the Manasagnagothri campus, which was the need of the hour to get better access to e resources. Both the guest speakers
appreciated the efforts of Dr.Khaiser Nikam, dynamic Chairperson of the Department of Library and Information Science, in taking the initiative to organize the program. From Inflibnet Center: Technical Sessions began with the presentation of Mr.Prem Chand Scientist-D, from Inflibnet Centre, Ahmedabad, who spoke at length about Inflibnet and the usage of e resources at several universities in India with a special reference to the University of Mysore. His elaborate presentation about use of e resources was an eye opener to many participants at the program. The other presentations were by Mr.Dharmendra Gusain of Springer, Mr.S Varun of Cambridge University Press, Mr.Ravishankar and Mr. Bhanu Prakash of Informatics (India) Ltd., Mr.Edwin of GIST, Mr.D.Shankar of Globe Publications Pvt. Ltd., Mr.Debapriya Mukherjee of Emerald. Dr. konnur, University Librarian, Bangalore University Dr M Krishnamurthy, former University Librarian; Mysore University Library also spoke on the occasion Dr. Siddamallaiah Librarian, NIMHANS, Bangalore, was one of the Panelist. The arrangements were good, Auditorium was nice, food as sumptuous, and guesthouse was excellent. Thanks to the Director of Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore Delegates at Lunch Panel discussion: Dr Siddamallaiah, Librarian, NIMHANS, Bangalore, Dr Khaiser Nikam, Chairperson of the department, and Dr Mallinath Kumbar, Reader at the department obtained the feed back about the workshop from the participants. All the participants found the workshop very useful and requested for better infrastructure. The panelists spoke about the importance of e- resources and their access and how to improve the usage as an active user in the library..
