Hundreds bid farewell to Bishop James Hundreds of friends, colleagues and parishioners from across the diocese and beyond bid a fond farewell to Bishop James Bell at a service in Ripon Cathedral on April 30 to mark his retirement. Bishop Nick led tributes to Bishop James for his twenty year ministry in the area during the Festal Eucharist - report and pictures here Signing off - Bishop James writes in Yorkshire Post Writing in the Yorkshire Post, Bishop James Bell has said he is hopeful for the future of the rural church describing many positive signs of growth and renewal. He has also recorded a video message in which he describes many of the 'fresh expressions' emerging in rural North Yorkshire churches. Read the article and watch the video here Bishop Tony encourages Dementia Awareness The Bishop of Wakefield is urging people to join hands around Wakefield Cathedral on 17 May to show they are 'United against Dementia'. It takes place during Dementia Awareness Week, 15-21 May, More on the Wakefield event with Bishop Tony here, and find out what other churches are planning to mark the week here Spring Harvest announces move to Harrogate Spring Harvest, the annual Christian teaching and worship event, which attracts thousands of Christians, including many Anglicans, has announced that it will be held in Harrogate in 2018. The traditional Butlins venues at Skegness and Minehead still remain but Harrogate will become a third centre from 3-8 April 2018. More here Gargoyles and stained glass - 2 cathedral initiatives Wakefield and Ripon Cathedrals have both just announced new initiatives to help preserve and renew their heritage. At Ripon Cathedral voting has opened for two new designs by local schoolchildren to replace medieval gargoyles - more here. Art meets theology at Bradford Cathedral A series of lectures, events and exhibitions on the theme of faith and art has got underway at Bradford Cathedral. On May 24 at 7pm, Professor Ben Quash, the Canon Theologian at Bradford Cathedral, will pose the question 'Can Contemporary Art be Devotional Art?' The free lecture starts at 7pm. Full details of this and other events here 'Thy Kingdom Come' prayer across the diocese Bradford (May 25), Ripon (May 28) & Wakefield Cathedrals (June 4) will hold 'beacon' events as part of 'Thy Kingdom Come', a national prayer campaign between Ascension and Pentecost. AROUND THE AREAS BRADFORD News to john.carter@leeds.anglican.org 'We Need a Vicar!' was the plea of the Junior Choir at St Paul's Shipley, and their video message went viral with TV and newspoaper appearances. Now they've appeared on Look North again after their prayers were answered. This weekend, Revd Henriette Howarth will be installed at St Paul's and has joined the children in a new YouTube video to celebrate. More here New DAC Appointments Three new appointments have been made to the Diocesan Advisory Committee following the retirement of its secretary Sylvia Johnson. Lisa McIntyre has been appointed as the new DAC Secretary and Jen Read and Stephen Craven have both been appointed as Assistant DAC Secretaries. More here Music for school or church from Skipton musician Retired church school head teacher, Brian Beresford, has published a new CD of original reflective music together with music and words for schools and churches based around the 'I am' sayings of Jesus. Brian, who leads the music at Holy Trinity Parish Church, Skipton, has been running song workshops in primary schools for many years. More details here Team Cycling Challenge for Ride + Stride Each year the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust run an event called Ride + Stride, which involves people getting sponsored to visit as many churches in a day as they can, either by foot, on a bike or by car. This year they are introducing a Team Challenge for Cyclists for teams of up to eight cyclists. Find out more here. Journey of the Magi Get ready for Christmas 2017 by hosting a performance of Journey of the Magi by Springs Dance Company. Delights audiences of all ages.
