Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning How to write a scientific explanation

Claim Most labs originate with a guiding question. Your claim is the concluding statement that answers your original question. The claim is usually one sentence in length. It must be accurate, specific, and completely answer the question.

Evidence The evidence is all of the scientific data that supports your claim. Evidence must be sufficient and relevant to your claim. Not all data is considered evidence! Most evidence is specific data from the lab. This can come from your own group or another group in the class.

Evidence The evidence is all of the scientific data that supports your claim. It can also come from other sources such as: computer simulations, websites, textbook, class notes, personal experience, observations, etc. It is important to have numerous pieces of evidence in order to prove your claim!

Reasoning Reasoning is the explanation that connects your claim to the evidence that supports it. It shows why the data you chose counts as evidence. It is the link between the evidence and the claim. This explanation acts as a conclusion of your experiment.

Reasoning Reasoning is the explanation that connects your claim to the evidence that supports it. It shows a detailed understanding of the scientific principles involved and uses correct science vocabulary. The reasoning should usually be at least a few sentences in length.

Claim, Evidence, Reasoning Claim: My dad is a space alien. Evidence: My dad speaks a weird language, he drinks green stuff, he says he s from Albuquerque (but I don t believe him), he dresses differently and he has a space ship Reasoning: The evidence doesn t lie. If my dad does all of those things then the only explanation is that he must be a space alien

Question: Did Arthur slip and fall down the stairs or was he murdered?

At five-feet-six and a hundred and ten pounds, Queenie Volpe was a sight to behold. When she tore out of the house after a tiff with her husband, Arthur, she went to the country club where there was a party going on. She left the club shortly before one in the morning and invited a few friends to follow her home and have one more drink. They got to the Volpe house about ten minutes after Queenie, who met them at the door and said, Something terrible has happened. Arthur slipped and fell on the stairs. He was coming down for another drink he still had the glass in his hand---and I think he s dead. Oh, my gosh---what shall I do? The autopsy conducted later concluded that Arthur died from a wound on the head and confirmed that he d been drinking.

CLAIM: Arthur did not accidentally fall down the stairs but instead he was murdered by his wife. EVIDENCE Arthur still has an unbroken glass in his hand Arthur s body was found face up with his head at the bottom of the stairs. Arthur s clothes do not look disheveled Queenie was home for 10 minutes before her friends showed up. REASONING When someone falls down the stairs they would let go of any object they re holding to try to catch themselves. Usually when someone falls down the stairs they would be facing down and would be feet first. When someone falls down the stairs their clothes would be torn or disheveled. If a spouse is found dead the wife or husband would call 911. Arthur is already dead Dying from a head wound would probably take more than 10 minutes.

Real-World Claims People make claims all of the time. Friends, parents, and just about every commerical on TV is making a claim about something. Discuss some claims you have heard recently at your table.

Some examples... Global warming Energy drinks Bottled water Diets Axe body spray Airborne Organic food Vaccinations "2012" Sketchers Vitamins Furniture stores Car insurance Magnet bracelets "The Earth is supported by turtles!" - Mr. Dunn

Thomas Huxley quote
