Father Grill started St. John Eudes Parish in 1964 and I was honored to be the second pastor from January 1989 until July 2001. I have now retired from administration as a pastor and Father Lawrence has graciously invited me to stay and help out at St. John Eudes. Without the burden of administration, I hope to be helpful in any way I am able. I have been here now two weekends and it is a strange and wonderful feeling to be back in a place where I lived twelve very happy years. My memories reach back, to what seems like a simpler world, even though we survived a major earthquake, church in a tent and the exciting and amazing rebuilding. After the earthquake, we put up a large sign on Mason Avenue saying We will Rise Again and indeed, thanks be to God, St. John Eudes has! It is good to be here. Many of you have asked me about my brother Fr. Leslie who visited here often. He was diagnosed with cardiac amyloidosis, a rare and serious condition. He received chemo therapy with the hope that it would slow down the progress of the disease. In reality it seems to have halted its progress to the joy of his family and the surprise of his doctors. Damage to his heart has been done so he walks slower and stairs put him out of breath. Doctors say he is 80% of what he was, and that will be his new normal. He drives, takes his turn on Masses and other priestly duties in his home parish in Limerick, Ireland. He is not in pain and we all feel he has received a special blessing from the Lord.
