Farewell Fr. Armando Virrey It s hard to believe that Fr. Armando came to St. Edward four years ago! Having now completed his term, Bishop Vann has assigned Fr. Armando to Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, in Santa Ana beginning July 2nd. In addition to serving at liturgies, and supporting ministries and events in English at St. Edward Church, Fr. Armando has done double-duty serving at the liturgies, ministries, and events that happen in Spanish at the church, as well as San Felipe de Jesus Chapel. Fr. Armando has baptized our children and adults, healed us through the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Anointing of the sick, conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation, prepared couples for and celebrated the Sacrament of Matrimony. Over these years, he has preached, taught classes, lead retreats and has been a generous instrument of God s love. Please join me in expressing our gratitude to him. Fr. Brendan Manson Pastor Welcome Fr. Marco Hernández I was born in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico on June 26, 1968. I am the youngest of 5 children. I studied elementary education in Reynosa, Mexico until my first year of University when I entered the Order of Franciscan Friars. In 1990, I made the act of profession, as a Franciscan Friar. After completing my studies in Philosophy and Theology in Mexico, I made my perpetual vows and ordained to the priesthood in 2000. Since my ordination 18 years ago, I have served in the following parishes: 2000-2005: Parochial Vicar in the Parish of San Judas Tadeo, in Reynosa, Tam. Mexico. 2005-2008: Pastor and Guardian of the Parish of San Judas Tadeo, in Reynosa, Tam. Mexico. 2008-2011: I studied for my Bachelor in Fundamental Theology, in Murcia, Spain, by the Antoniana Faculty of Rome. The Master in Therapy and Solution of Conjugal Conflicts, by the Institute of the Family, in Murcia, Spain. 2011-2014: Guardian and Rector of the Basilica of Zapopan, in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mex. 2014-2015: Pastor and Guardian of the Parish of San Francisco de Asis, in Cd. MONARCH NEWS: 7 th Grade Engages in Real-World Engineering Challenges Makerspace is a unique clasroom where learners engage in hands-on collaboration and creativity across multiple disciplines. Every grade participates in Makerspace, but seventh grade had a unique year-long focus to create projects designed for children with cerebral palsy (CP) as part of the Project Lead the Way curriculum. Seventh grade began the year learning about cerebral palsy and the children s physical, sensory, and cognitive needs. They then started their first project to design, build and test models of ankle foot orthoses. The students learned critical engineering skills such as thumbnail, isometric, and multiview sketches, and accurate measuring with rulers and dial calipers. Learners then moved on to observation and documentation by performing a mechanical dissection on a puzzle cube. Each piece had to be sketched and annotated so that students would know exactly how the puzzle fit back together. They then designed a modification for the puzzle toy to make it more usable for a CP child. The students also worked together in a challenge to design, build, test, document, and present a three-dimensional puzzle system made from exactly 27 small, wooden cubes and five puzzle parts. The final team project - to design a toy for a CP child ages 5-7 - showcased their understanding of all the lessons learned that year. The toy needed to have a universal design so that it would be appropriate for use by all children, but also specifically address CP needs. The toys were donated to a parent of a seventh grader who works professionally with children who have cerebral palsy.
