Epistle Reading St. Paul s Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6 BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek. Gospel Reading The Gospel According to Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power. 3rd Week Lenten Message Continued Blessed and Holy Lenten Journey LENTEN MESSAGE FOR THE VENERATION OF THE CROSS My Dear Beloved Family in Christ, As we continue or Lenten Journey and on this Third Sunday of Holy and Great Lent we commemorate the Veneration of the Holy Cross. Our Holy Orthodox Church in its infinite wisdom places this Sunday in the middle of our Lenten Journey as the means and landmark to bring us home. Though we may have probably struggled this Lenten period, we are given renewed hope and anticipated victory through Christ's sacrifice on that big wooden cross. We have followed a long path so far and are tired but with the Cross of Christ now before us it is like a beautiful tree with flourishing leaves that provides a shadow to rest in and rejuvenate us to continue our journey. Like a thirst quenching oasis, we are given nourishment to carry on the 'good fight' and given the landmark to continue our journey to reach our destination. It is simple for us to lose our focus as we contemplate on the things necessary throughout our busy schedules. So, let us take a moment and stand in front of the Cross and look and be silent. Our Lenten Journey should be a time of silence where we make the time to step away from the business of our everyday life. The Cross is our reminder and motivation. Let us not only see but hear and feel the Cross. Let us hear the word from the cross. This is where God has done His work and where we see all that God has done. This is the most eloquent word spoken by Christ in silence, Christ hanging on the Cross giving up His life for us and is spoken in silence. His arms are open and He reveals His word and love for us. Let us stand in silence before the cross and listen and feel and then contemplate on what we should say and do. If we look at the cross it will tell us about us individually and what we should do in our life. Let us contemplate on making Christ the center of our life and live as Christ did. Let us show constant mercy and forgiveness and love and let us not give into the temptations of sin. Let us show the love of God in all circumstances. May our Lenten Journey continue to be silent and peaceful filled with the word of God from the cross. In Humility and love, +fr. elias
