IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL OUR LADY OF JOY VOLUNTEERS The Diocese of Phoenix requires that all volunteers in a parish complete the Safe Environment Training program. There are two types of SET classes: Foundation Class: This is the first SET class required for all volunteers and is offered only in a classroom format. Volunteers who serve minors and/or vulnerable adults must take the Foundation Class prior to service. All other should complete the class within one month of beginning their volunteer service. For a list of Foundation Class dates offered at locations around the Valley, please go to: www.safeenvironmenttraining.org and click on the Classes tab. Renewal Class: All volunteers who have completed their one-time Foundation Class are required to take an online Renewal Class annually between July 1 and December 31. The Renewal Class can be found at: www.safeenvironmenttraining.org. Click the Online Renewal tab. After watching the Renewal video of your choice though the credits, you will receive an message on your screen followed by an email confirming your completion of the Renewal Class. (The newest video is Keeping the Promise Alive and is 32 minutes long.) Please forward your confirmation email to your ministry leader. If you do not currently belong to a ministry, please forward your confirmation email to lharo@oloj.org Note: All new volunteers must complete a Volunteer Application form in addition to SET training. An interview and three references are required by the application. Questions? Email safeenvironment@dphx.org or call Lauren Haro, OLOJ Stewardship & Communications Coordinator, at 480-346-3043. Happy New Year! Catholic Thoughts David Lins, Director of Faith Formation What? I m a bit early? Nope. I m just Catholic. Advent is the beginning of the new liturgical year and in this weekend s Gospel, we start things at the end: Jesus second coming. Mark 13 contains the end of Jesus public ministry. The final advice He gives before His Passion? Stay awake. Be vigilant. Pray. You do not know the hour He will return. Seeing as we are Catholic, it is our New Year, and as New Year s is a time for resolutions, let s make fitting resolutions. 1. We need to stay awake to what really matters. This means we don t get caught up in the material competition of this world. Instead, we need to invest in relationships - with God, with family, with friends, with strangers, and even with enemies. 2. We need to remain vigilant to what we allow to infect our souls. This means we tighten up our standards in all forms of media - the movies and television we watch, the radio and podcasts we listen to, and the books we read. This means we guard our conversations and the directions they take. 3. We need to be people of prayer. Not just at Mass. Not just before meals. Not just before tests or sales calls. Pray in the morning when we rise. Pray before important conversations. Pray in gratitude for blessings. Pray for trust when walking through challenges. Pray at night before we rest. Living these resolutions will indeed make it a Happy New Year! Questions? Comments? Email David at dlins@oloj.org Page 3
