Ka Leo Mekokiko Dec 2016 - Jan 2017 2 Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ So All May Experience God s Life-Giving Love We are now entering the season of Advent, the time of waiting and watching, but since we live in a fast paced world it is difficult for us to wait and watch. Including myself, I also prefer short-term expectations and competence in three easy lessons. But Jesus instruction to be watchful is especially relevant now. The call is not just to be watchful and spiritually prepared for His coming, but also to be watchful for the eternal in the midst of the temporary, and for the something that is spiritually genuine in the midst of all the synthetic. The last couple of weeks have been very difficult for all of us who live in the United States. The notorious election is over but we need to ask a question, How will we respond to the needs of marginal people in our society? We also might have another question, How do I live as a Christian for such a time as today? We need to remember the true meaning of Christmas which is revealed, not in how elaborate and beautiful our Christmas presents are wrapped, but in our individual acts of kindness and sacrifice for the unfortunate, the broken and the wounded. I had a chance to listen to Sister Kathleen Flood who taught us about contemplative prayer and she told us that it is like taking a long, loving look at God. I think about that often as I gaze upon beautiful sunsets from the windows of my home and as I walk along the beach or listen to Bach. I had the same feeling when I read a beautiful affirmation of faith attributed to Mother Teresa. It spoke to me of waiting during Advent and our part in that waiting. People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you. Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight. Build anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough. Give the world the best you ve got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. (Love Them Anyway Mother Teresa) It is a time for us to turn our face to God and be with people of God who needs our little acts of generosity and little deeds of kindness. It is a time for us to practice forgiveness for each other. Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Rev. Dr. Se Hee Han Hawaii District Superintendent

Ka Leo Mekokiko Dec 2016 - Jan 2017 3 MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT LAY LEADER Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ of the Hawaii District! This greeting comes with a wholehearted thanksgiving for our gracious, loving, and merciful Holy God who abides in all of us. I hope that you all are abiding in Him, just as Jesus said in John 15:4: Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. As the first Sunday of Advent approaches, we prepare for Our Savior s birth. We prepare him room. We reflect on all the blessings that God bestows upon us and our loved ones, and we reflect on how Peace on Earth begins with ourselves. We must remember those who are oppressed, lonely and suffering, especially at this time of year when they look around and see materialistic images that represent happy holidays and merriment. Let us prepare and make room in our hearts for the birth of Jesus Christ, who gives us the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol (Galatians 5:22-12), to share with others. May the Grace of God and the Peace of Christ be with you all as the Holiday Season begins! Your Sister in Christ, Lynn Owan District Lay Leader Happy Thanksgiving Wishes to You All! From the District Staff We would like to express our gratitude to all of the District Pastors and laity who made special effort for the Hawaii District. We appreciate the opportunity to share in fellowship and extend bountiful blessings to you and your loved ones. District Staff: Rev. Dr. Se Hee Han, District Superintendent Michele Kimura, Administrative Assistant/ District Secretary Rosie Jacinto, Chief Financial Officer
