Overview Preamble The Cllegiate Church f Manchester was first funded in 1421 by Charter and Ryal Licence frm King Henry V. The Cllege was disslved by Act f Parliament in the reign f King Edward VI and was in the year 1553 refunded by Queen Mary; it was again disslved in the reign f Queen Elizabeth wh thereupn granted it anther Charter. The existing Charter was granted by King Charles I with the bject f cntinuing and restring the ld Cllege and funding it anew and by that Charter the Cllege, cnsisting f a Warden and fur Fellws, all being priests, was incrprated by the name f the " Warden and Fellws f the Cllege f Christ in Manchester funded by King Charles " with perpetual successin. The Charter als prvides that there shall be frever in the said Cllege tw Chaplains r Vicars, being Clerks, and fur men, being either Clerks r laymen, and fur bys skilled in music, t perfrm daily prayers and Divine service in the Chapel f the Cllege. The Ecclesiastical Cmmissiners Act 1840 enacted that the Warden and the Fellws shuld be styled respectively the Dean and the Canns. By Order in Cuncil dated the 10th day f August, 1847, it was rdered that the Cllegiate Church f Manchester shuld be cnstituted and becme and shuld frever thereafter be a Cathedral Church and the seat f a Bishp and shuld be invested with all the hnurs, dignities and privileges f a Cathedral Church r Episcpal seat and that the Dean and Canns f the said Cathedral Church shuld be the Dean and Chapter theref. The Dean and Residentiary Canns are seized f the Rectry f the ancient Parish f Manchester, and the Dean, as well as being Chairman f the Chapter, is the Rectr f the Residuary Parish f Manchester. As such, the Dean still acts as Chairman f the meeting f parishiners and Annual Church Parchial Meeting which have cntinued t be held accrding t ancient usage fr the Residuary Parish f Manchester, at which Church Wardens cntinue t be elected annually and at which all ther things necessary t be dne at a meeting f parishiners and Annual Parchial Church Meeting cntinue t be dne. The finances f the Cathedral Church are gverned by the Parish f Manchester Divisin Act 1850 and the Parish f Manchester Revenues Measure 1933 and ther legislatin. A new Cnstitutin and Statutes were drawn up by a Transitinal Cuncil established in accrdance with the Cathedrals Measure 1999 and came int effect at Pentecst, 2002. Backgrund The Cathedral is a praying cmmunity, funded as a Cllegiate Church in 1421 and established as a Cathedra in 1847. Our spiritual life is sustained by the Daily Office and the celebratin f the Hly Eucharist, and stands within the brad traditin within Anglicanism. Thelgically we sit within the brad liberal traditin within the Church f England whilst at the same time being pen t ther traditins within the Church. It is the seat f the Bishp f Manchester and plays its part in prmting the life and missin f the Dicese f Manchester, whse mther church it is. The Dean and Chapter ensure that the Cathedral plays its part in praying fr and supprting the ministry f the bishp. The Cathedral Chapter aspires t excellence in liturgy and music, and asks visiting chirs and thers respnsible fr planning r leading wrship r ther events here t share ur aspiratin. We are prud f ur wrld class musicians and chir. Our christers are recruited frm the wrld renwned Chetham s Schl f Music next dr t the Cathedral and frm ur statutry chir. The Chapter recgnises that at the heart f the life f the Cathedral are the Eucharist and the Opus Dei. We are cmmitted t mdern, inclusive, imaginative and accessible wrship; as cathedral fr the Dicese, the wrship ffered n dicesan ccasins seeks t be nn-partisan, excellent and engaging. Music is central t the wrshipping life f Manchester Cathedral, which encurages the highest pssible standards and creative imaginatins in the musicians it emplys. The Cathedral Chir cnsists f a mixed tp line f bys and girls wh attend the internatinally renwned Chetham's Schl f Music, next t the Cathedral, frm the age f eight until thirteen; the Lay-Clerks are all prfessinal singers in and arund Manchester and the Cathedral Vluntary Chir is a mixed adult chir that rehearses weekly in readiness f Sunday evensng. Develpment Prject The Manchester Cathedral Develpment Prject (MCDP) prvides an pprtunity t secure a 600-year traditin f music, mdernise and develp the Cathedral buildings and enhance the use f the spaces arund them. The main aims f the prject are: T make the Cathedral fit fr the 21 st century by imprving facilities within the building and renewing the rf; T play a part in redesigning the immediate envirnment, helping t create a series f new public spaces arund the Cathedral in partnership with regeneratin plans by the cities f Manchester and Salfrd fr the vicinity f the Cathedral buildings; T ensure ur 600-year traditin f chral music cntinues by creating a music endwment fund and installing a new rgan. The renewal f Manchester and its immediate envirnment will benefit the entire cmmunity, including wrshipping cngregatins, the scially disadvantaged and thse invlved in the arts, music, spirituality and heritage. Rle Purpse The Wrship & Music Administratr supprts the Dean and Chapter s ministry and missin by prviding efficient administrative supprt t the Cann Precentr, Organist & Master f the Christers and musicians f Manchester Cathedral. The rle is pivtal in ensuring that the liturgical and musical fferings are prfessinally and sensitively presented t ther clleagues, the cngregatin and visitrs; this is achieved by frging clse links between a wide range f stakehlders within the cmmunity. The successful candidate will be able t demnstrate exemplary team wrking skills and have the capacity t wrk flexibly and effectively. They will be expected t demnstrate strng rganisatinal and interpersnal skills and have well-develped persnal management skills; they will als be creative, energetic, pen and cllabrative with a willingness t learn and use new sftware. Music and the Cathedral Chir Preparatin f all music department publicity, including flyers, psters and e-news; Organise and attend christer trips, turs, recruitment days and assciated auditins as required; Maintain effective, pen channels f cmmunicatin between the department, christer parents and Chetham s Schl f Music and liaise between all parties n a regular basis; Prvisin f refreshments fr Christers befre/after services and ccasinal pastral care; Liaise with and crdinate Lay Clerks t ensure services/events are cvered and calculating mnthly salaries; Arrangement f rgan and pian tuning visits; Cmputerise musical scres and share in the rganisatin f the extensive chir library; Cmpile and submit data t the Perfrming Rights Sciety; Organise events such as Cffee Cncerts, Outreach Prjects, Cme and Sing, Manchester Barque. Flexibility will be required fr this rle but the standard wrking pattern is as fllws: Mnday, 8.30am 4.30pm; Tuesday, 8.30am 4.30pm; Wednesday, 8.30am 4.30pm; Thursday, 9am 5pm; Friday, 9am 5pm; 35 hurs per week (with ne hur unpaid lunch break daily).
