Overview Preamble The Cllegiate Church f Manchester was first funded in 1421 by Charter and Ryal Licence frm King Henry V. The Cllege was disslved by Act f Parliament in the reign f King Edward VI and was in the year 1553 refunded by Queen Mary; it was again disslved in the reign f Queen Elizabeth wh thereupn granted it anther Charter. The existing Charter was granted by King Charles I with the bject f cntinuing and restring the ld Cllege and funding it anew and by that Charter the Cllege, cnsisting f a Warden and fur Fellws, all being priests, was incrprated by the name f the " Warden and Fellws f the Cllege f Christ in Manchester funded by King Charles " with perpetual successin. The Charter als prvides that there shall be frever in the said Cllege tw Chaplains r Vicars, being Clerks, and fur men, being either Clerks r laymen, and fur bys skilled in music, t perfrm daily prayers and Divine service in the Chapel f the Cllege. The Ecclesiastical Cmmissiners Act 1840 enacted that the Warden and the Fellws shuld be styled respectively the Dean and the Canns. By Order in Cuncil dated the 10th day f August, 1847, it was rdered that the Cllegiate Church f Manchester shuld be cnstituted and becme and shuld frever thereafter be a Cathedral Church and the seat f a Bishp and shuld be invested with all the hnurs, dignities and privileges f a Cathedral Church r Episcpal seat and that the Dean and Canns f the said Cathedral Church shuld be the Dean and Chapter theref. The Dean and Residentiary Canns are seized f the Rectry f the ancient Parish f Manchester, and the Dean, as well as being Chairman f the Chapter, is the Rectr f the Residuary Parish f Manchester. As such, the Dean still acts as Chairman f the meeting f parishiners and Annual Church Parchial Meeting which have cntinued t be held accrding t ancient usage fr the Residuary Parish f Manchester, at which Church Wardens cntinue t be elected annually and at which all ther things necessary t be dne at a meeting f parishiners and Annual Parchial Church Meeting cntinue t be dne. The finances f the Cathedral Church are gverned by the Parish f Manchester Divisin Act 1850 and the Parish f Manchester Revenues Measure 1933 and ther legislatin. A new Cnstitutin and Statutes were drawn up by a Transitinal Cuncil established in accrdance with the Cathedrals Measure 1999 and came int effect at Pentecst, 2002. Develpment Prject The Manchester Cathedral Develpment Prject (MCDP) prvides an pprtunity t secure a 600-year traditin f music, mdernise and develp the Cathedral buildings and enhance the use f the spaces arund them. The main aims f the prject are: T make the Cathedral fit fr the 21 st century by imprving facilities within the building and renewing the rf; T play a part in redesigning the immediate envirnment, helping t create a series f new public spaces arund the Cathedral in partnership with regeneratin plans by the cities f Manchester and Salfrd fr the vicinity f the Cathedral buildings; T ensure ur 600-year traditin f chral music cntinues by creating a music endwment fund and installing a new rgan. The rle is pivtal in ensuring that the liturgical and musical fferings are prfessinally and sensitively presented t ther clleagues, the cngregatin and visitrs; this is achieved by frging clse links between a wide range f stakehlders within the cmmunity.
