Order of Worship Welcome and greetings Jared Huffman, associate pastor * Call to worship taken from Psalm 33 Leader: Sing joyfully to the Lord! For the Word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. All: The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. Leader: Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. All: Sing joyfully to the Lord! * Hymn of praise Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near, join me in glad adoration. Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee! Surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee; ponder anew what the Almighty will do, if with his love he befriend thee. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the amen sound from his people again; gladly fore er we adore him. words by Joachim Neander, 1680 * Prayer of adoration

Affirmation of belief in the supremacy of Scripture (Sola Scriptura): Leader: Holy God, we praise you for the cry of the Reformation and affirm that all things necessary for man s salvation, faith and life are taught in the Word of God. We gladly proclaim that: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (WCF 1-7, 2 Timothy 3:16-17) All: The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. (Psalm 19:7-8a) Leader: When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the desert, he responded to every temptation by quoting Scripture, including this statement from Deuteronomy: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4, Deuteronomy 8:3) All: Therefore, we should be careful to do whatever God has commanded; we should not add to nor take away from the commands of the Lord. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever. (Deuteronomy 12:32, Isaiah 40:8) Call to confession taken from Romans 3 and Proverbs 28 No one will be declared righteous in God s sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Hymn of confession God Be Merciful to Me God, be merciful to me, on thy grace I rest my plea; plenteous in compassion thou, blot out my transgressions now; wash me, make me pure within; cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin. My transgressions I confess, grief and guilt my soul oppress; I have sinned against thy grace and provoked thee to thy face; I confess thy judgment just; speechless, I thy mercy trust. Gracious God, my heart renew, make my spirit right and true; cast me not away from thee, let thy Spirit dwell in me; thy salvation s joy impart; steadfast make my willing heart. words: The Psalter, 1912

Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace taken from 1 John 4 and Romans 8 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. * Hymn of assurance And Can It Be That I Should Gain And can it be that I should gain an int rest in the Savior s blood? Died he for me, who caused his pain? For me, who him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? He left his Father s throne above (so free, so infinite his grace!), humbled himself (so great his love!), and bled for all his chosen race. Tis mercy all, immense and free; for, O my God, it found out me. Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in him, is mine! Alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach th eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? words by Charles Wesley, 1738 Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn Rejoice in All Your Works (see opposite page for words and music) * Scripture reading from Mark 2:18-22 Emma Mooney (9:30) text printed in the bulletin Peggy Michaels (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Elect from ev ry nation, yet one o er all the earth, her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. continued

* Benediction * Doxology * Postlude Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore; till with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. words by Samuel Stone, 1866 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. IN OBSERVANCE OF THE 500 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION, we affirm our belief in five foundational truths of the Christian faith, often called the five solas. Sola is the Latin word for alone or only. These five principles serve as theological pillars of the Christian faith: Sola Scriptura, or by Scripture alone Sola Fide, or through faith alone Sola Gratia, or by grace alone Solus Christus, or by Christ alone Soli Deo Gloria, or for the glory of God alone ELDERS MEET TO PRAY in Pastor Novenson s office at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday morning. If you would like them to pray for you and your specific needs, they welcome you to join them. CHILDREN ARE WELCOME to participate in all worship services, no matter the age of the child. Worship sheets and crayons are available in the fellowship hall lobby to help children interact with the sermon.

Mark 2:18-22 18 Now John s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, How is it that John s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not? 19 Jesus answered, How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast. 21 No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into new wineskins.

SERMON NOTES The Bridegroom s Presence Changes Everything! Mark 2:18-22 1. The question asked: why don t your disciples fast? (v. 18) 2. The answer given: the Bridegroom has come! (vv. 19-20) 3. The appropriate response: (vv. 21-22) fast and feast according to Jesus presence. a transformed life not an amended life! BIG IDEA: The presence of our Bridegroom changes everything about us.
